Sunday Morning, Hmmttr AVAUNCIE-MRMl B-5 Minnesota Nips Stubborn Purdue, 10-7 JL IF THERE EVER WAS a team snake-bit when the football playoffs roll around, Floydada and Friday night in Canyon, the Whirlwinds carried the fight to Dalhart only to lose on a long last quarter touchdown. The Whirlwinds were down in scoring position enough times, but either penalties or incomplete passes killed the chances. Dalhart threatened three times and cashed in twice for the win. The weather conditions fit for man or beast, let alone a bi-district football game. Snow had to be scraped off the field earlier in the day and then it started drizzling about an hour before the kickoff, and that coupled with a stiff wind with the temperature below freezing set the stage for the evenly-fought contest.

Despite the bad weather, Rodney Teague brought along his aerial circus with receivers Don Switzer. Charles Christian and Daryl Lind- sey making catches as if it was a hot, summer day. Floydada had to pass as its running game faltered at the start and Teague did a masterful job, but not enough for victory. There were at least six times he was trapped in the backfield, but he broke away with tacklers on him for running yardage. It also happened on other occasions when he was back to pass.

He would break away and then fire, waiting at the last moment, giving the receivers more time to get open. Almost overlooked was the running of Albert Hernandez, who supplied the 'Winds with 45 yards on eight carries. Teague made only 31 yards on 10 tries, but he was dropped for big losses several times trying to pass. The weather hurt Dalhart's speedy backs when they tried to RODNEY TEAGUE make the sharp turns at the corner, but it helped fullback Jim McCleskey, who put on a great running show, especially on the final touchdown drive when he made 86 of the 94 yards in just three carries. The Whirlwinds contained speedy Tommy Ledbetter, who made 60 yards, but 20 came on a fourth down fake punt in the final seconds of play.

Despite the bad weather, the fumbling as bad as (me might think. Dalhart lost four, but two were on short kickoffs. Floydada lost one and the Wolves turned it into a touchdown. So, for the fourth year, Floydada lost only one game and now the Winds join the other area teams in basketball workouts. They did better than many figured they would, especially going through the regular season without a loss.

SOME OF THE DENVER CITY fans are wondering if one of their former athletes, Jerry Cox, now a member of the freshman football team at Texas Tech, is majoring in speech. Jerry, a top-notch guard, did a real job at halftime Friday of the Picador-North Texas Frosh game. He play because of a knee injury. There was some worry about grades during the recruiting last year, but the big guy is doing a good job with his studies and is passing. NORTH TEXAS MADE A big impression on Jones Stadium Friday, and not the kind a lot of locals were proud of.

The bus driver drove the big van down on the playing field and made ruts in the south end zone. And the guy was insulted when he was rebuked. Stephens Is Difference MINNEAPOLIS (UPI) Sandy Stephens became the first Minnesota back since Paul Giel to gain more than 1,000 yards as he guided the fourth ranked Gophers past Purdue, 10-7, Saturday to remain unbeaten in the Big Ten football race. It was the seventh straight victory for the defending national champions after their opening 6-0 loss to Missouri in a freak September snowstorm. The Gophers have a 6-0 confer ence record.

Ohio State, playing out of the conference Saturday, has a 5-0 Big Ten mark. Purdue, ranked No. 7 nationally, was out of contention until the last period when the Boilermakers, stopped cold on the ground by the defense, took to the air. A record crowd of 67,081 watched the Gophers avenge their lone 1960 football loss, Stephens, 215-pound senior quarterback, scored the lone touchdown on a four yard sprint in the closing minutes of the first half. He also chipped in a 16-yard key run on the series which led to the first Minnesota score, a 35- yard field goal by tackle Tom Loechler, that came only minutes before the Minnesota touchdown.

Alternate quarterback Gary Hogan set up the Purdue touchdown with a 53-yard heave to Jack Elwell with about five minutes left in the game. The toss carried the ball to the Minnesota three and Hogan banged into the end zone from the one on fourth down. FIELD GOAL WINS North Carolina Is Trimmed By Duke DURHAM, N. C. (UPI)-Piace- kick specialist Bill Reynolds kicked a 39-yard field goal with two seconds showing on the clock Saturday to give Duke a 6-3 victory over arch-rival North Carolina, and the Atlantic Coast Conference championship.

Reynolds, who had missed two domination earlier, booted two field goals in the final period to bring the Blue Devils from behind in a crucial Minnesota Purdue 0 10 0 0 0-10 7- IN SECOND HALF Michigan Thumps Hawkeyes, 23-14 ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) Michigan crippled by a series of first half injuries, stmck back with a relentless ground and air attack for three second half touchdowns Saturday and crushed Iowa 23-14. The Wolverines, whipped physically. and apparently beaten at halftone, were aroused by the devastating runs of Dave Raimey, Dave Glinka and third-stringer Harvey Chapman before 61,925 in Michigan Stadium. The Hawkeyes seized a 14-3 lead on a pair of long marches in the first half.

But line held them to a standstill in the second half and the Michigan backs ran wild. Michigan lost its best runner, halfback Bennie McRae, with a bruised shoulder in the first quarter. His replacement, Jack Stroebel, was hurt in the second period, leaving Chapman, a sophomore, his first Big Ten opportunity. Arlington State Takes 27-0 Win hair-raiser played before 41,000 fans in Duke Stadium. His winning placement was from a slight angle to the right, but it went perfectly and Reynolds leaped into the arms of a teammate and they danced with joy.

The victory broke a two year of the series by the Tar Heels and finished ACC season with a 5-1 record. The Blue Devils have lost three games in all, and have only Notre Dame yet to play. The Tar Heels, bidding for their first ACC title, went ahead 3-0 on a 29-yard field goal by fullback Bob Elliott in the second period, and the brawny Tar Heel defense DENTON (UPI) LouisvilleiaPPeared bent on making it stand fullback Ernie Green scored Reynolds kicked his first Louisville Tops NTS Colorado Turns Fumble Into 7-0 Victory Over Hapless Nebraska Scott Maentz, Todd Grant and John Walker, bulwarks of the Wolverine defense, were shaken up early in the game. He took them 77 yards for a touchdown, running the final 44 himself when he couldn't find a pass receiver downfield. Chapman set up the next score with a 54-yard run and Glinka passed 20 yards to Bob Broun for the final touchdown. ARLINGTON (UPI) Arlington State bounced back from a scoreless first period Saturday to whip Southwestern Oklahoma 27-0 before a homecoming crowd of about 8,500. The Rebels completely dominated the game, rolling up 25 first downs to 12 for the Bulldogs. Arlington State gained 349 yards rushing and 75 passing while holding the Oklahoma team to 137 on the ground and 22 in the air.

Halfback Douglas Hart scored two touchdowns on runs of 1 and 17 yards, and caught a pass from quarterabck Doug Wilson for a two-point conversion to acount for 14 Rebel points. The other Arlington scores came on a 3-yard plunge by halfback Fred Arnold and a 61-yard pass from Richard Staton to end Roger Jones with only a minute and a half left in the game. Fullback Charlie Key kicked one conversion. a 71-yard run and a 1-yard plunge Saturday and his teammates held North Texas State to 126 yards total offense as the Cardinals scored a 20-0 inter-sectional football victory. Green opened the scoring in the first quarter when he bolted 71 yards through the Eagle line.

His other touchdown came in the second quarter after halfback Lee Calland returned a North Texas punt 80 yards to the Eagle 1. Calland got the third Card touchdown in the third period when he broke into the clear and raced 40 yards into the end zone. The Eagles made only six first downs, and the quarterbacks were rushed so hard they managed only three completions in 11 passing attempts while having four intercepted. The score might have bern even more one sided if the punting had been less effective. North Texas kicked nine times for a 40.7-yard average.

(UPI) The Colorado Buffaloes, battling hard on a sloppy field to enhance their Orange Bowl chances, parlayed only lost fumble and a super-stingy defense into a 7-0 Big Eight victory Saturday. Despite the single touchdown margin, Colorado overwhelmed Nebraska. There wasn't history enough juice in the Nebraska at- fifth loss, the tack to pick up a first down or complete a pass. The Buffaloes made 20 first downs and quarterback Gale Weidner was clicking through the air lanes, but fumbles destroyed four Colorado threats. Three field goal attempts went awry.

The Colorado touchdown came the thjrd period after Claude the Huskers lost on 11. Three plays and one penalty later Weidner wedged over from the one. As the game ended, the Buffs were stopped on the Nebraska one. The victory left Colorado with a 6-0 Big Eight record and a 7-1 It was fourth in the conference. Shop Til 9 p.m. Monday Tight er Race Seen In NFL (Ijr The Associated Press) The National Football tight Eastern Conference title race could get even tighter Sun day. It all depends on the Cleveland Browns and the Pittsburgh Steel- ers. If both the Browns and the Steelers win, three clubs will be deadlocked for the lead.

The Philadelphia Eagles and the New York Giants are now tied for the No. 1 spot. The Browns run headlong into the smarting Eagles in Cleveland. Pittsburgh tangles with the Giants in New York. The Giants and the Eagles have 7-2 records, the Browns 6-3.

A victory for the Steelers would square their record at 5-5 and give them the satisfaction of knowing they'd solved the best defense. Other activity in the Eastern Conference sends the St. Louis Cardinals (4-5) to Baltimore for an interconference struggle with the up-and-down Colts (4-5) of the Western Division, and the Wash ington Redskins against the Cow boys in the Cotton Bowl at Dallas (4-5). The Redskins will try to snap a 17-game losing streak, nine of them this year. The Green Bay Packers, perched all alone atop the Western Conference, throw their 7-2 record on the line against the Los Angeles Rams (3-6) in Green Bay.

Regardless oi the outcome, nobody can as much as tie the Pack ers. A Green Bay loss, however, coupled with a victory by second- place Detroit (5-3-1) at Minnesota (2-7) would leave the Lions only a half game off the Packer pace Detroit and Green Bay play each other Thanksgiving Day. The Chicago Bears (5-4), anxi ous to get back in the thick of the Western race after losing 31-28 to the Packers, visit the San Francisco 49ers (4-4-1). The 49ers have only a tie and three losses to show iqg their last four tgists. Mich.

State Licks Wildcats, 21-13 EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP)Michigan State managed to convert more fumbles into touchdowns than Northwestern Saturday to give the ninth-ra ke Spartans a 21-13 Big Ten victory over the Wildcats. The first three scores were set up by fumbles. Spartan scatback Sherman Lewis, himself one of the ball blers, ran for two of the MSU touchdowns. Michigan State now is 4-2 in the Big Ten and Northwestern is 2-4.

The game might have looked like a comedy of errors before the 51,403 fans in Spartan Stadium but it wasn't funny to the tensed up MSU and Wildcat players. The Wildcats bl ed five times the first half and lost possession four times. Michigan State fumbled three times and lost possession twice. Northwestern led 7-0 at the end of the first period and MSU had an 8-7 lead at the half. Both teams scored in the third period and the Spartans put the game away by passing for one more touchdown in the final quarter.
