JIM K.i J'" puppet) and Chelveston the (live) duck." Children especially got a kick out of seeing the duck snap and bite Rayner, according to the Sun-Times, But Rayner's career was far more than clown greasepaint. Born Raymond Rahner in Queens, N.Y., in 1919, his show business name was Rayner. A navigator during World War II, Rayner's B-17 bomber was shot down over German-occupied Paris, and he was taken prisoner.

He was sent to Sta-lag Luft 3, a Nazi prison camp in Germany later immortalized in the movie, "The Great Escape." Rayner, who began acting in a prisoners' theater troupe, said it was a diversion from the more serious business of being a lookout and helping dispose of soil removed from the daily tunnel building. He said he was transferred to another part of the compound before the disastrous escape took place. He earned degrees in philosophy and English at Fordham University. After a number of radio and TV shows, he landed a job in 1953 with the CBS affiliate in Chicago. He hosted a teenage dance show before going into kids' shows exclusively.

In 1961, he joined WGN-TV and became known as "the busiest man in Chicago television." Besides morning and lunchtime shows, he did an afternoon cartoon show. Rayner also entertained children's parents, appearing in more than 35 Chicago-area theater productions with stars like Betty Grable, Ginger Rogers, Peggy Cass, Polly Bergen, Ann Sothern and Karen Black. The winter of 1978-79 was life changing, he said. After taking two hours to drive about 16 miles in snow to his North-brook, 111., home, he told his wife, "We're going to a warmer climate." They chose Albuquerque over larger, more famous cities because it was the right size, he said. When Channel 13 learned that he had moved here, the station hired Rayner for the 5:30 and 10 p.m.

Rayner was best known on Chicago's WGN-TV for his morning show, "Ray Rayner and Friends." People likened the children's show to the "Today" show for adults. Rayner often beat the NBC-TV show in morning ratings, according to a Chicago Sun-Times obituary. During the noon hour, Rayner would appear on "Bozo's Circus" as Oliver 0. Oliver, a country bumpkin. In clown makeup, Rayner played the foil to the legendary Bozo the Clown.

Rayner helped make "Bozo's Circus" one the most popular shows on Chicago television. At one time, there was an eight-year wait for studio audience tickets. "I'm the one who got the pies in the face," Rayner told the Journal in a 1995 interview. "I did a little bit of everything," he said of the Rayner show. "The show was built around Warner Bros, cartoons I was there after every cartoon or segment.

Rayner, who at one time appeared on three live daily TV shows in the 1960s, said he "retired" to New Mexico in 1980 to escape Chicago's winters. Rayner died Jan. 21 of complications from pneumonia at a hospital in Fort Myers, where he had lived since 1999. Rayner was 84.

Rayner was a friendly veteran television personality and not a hardcore newsman, said Linda Thorne, who was acting news director at Channel 13 in 1981. "He was real affable a nice, nice guy," said Thorne, who couldn't believe that Louie B. Nunn THE young-appearing Rayner was in his 80s. "A very pleasant man to be around." Rayner used costumes, gags, props, stunts and live animals on his weather shows. "I make the show Gov.

Rayner, who lived in Albuquerque from 1980 to 1999, worked at the station for about five years. He also appeared in plays at Popejoy Hall, accord said Friday he appreciated Nunn's plainspoken style. "You didn't have to wonder what he was trying to say," said Jones, a Democrat. "He would, give you an abundance of plain talk." Nunn's four-year gubernatorial administration saw Kentucky take strides in caring for the mentally retarded, the mentally ill and juvenile delinquents.

On his watch, a network of 22 mental health centers was completed and, for the first time in Kentucky history, all four state psychiatric hospitals were fully accredited. Nunn later called the revamping of the state's mental-health treatment system his proudest accomplishment The state's university system was also expanded during his term, and housing discrimination was outlawed. Nunn paid for improvements Larry Harris of Albuquerque; children, Kathy Hill and husband, Jerry of Portland, OR, Laurie Adams and husband, Steve of Dallas, TX and Mike Harris and wife, Jeanette of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Cameron and Kara Adams of Dallas, TX and Robert and Scott Harris of Albuquerque; and mother, Mary I. Former Gov. Louie B. Nunn, a fierce competitor who oversaw a revamping of Kentucky's men--tal-health care system and the outlawing of housing discrimination, has died. He was 79. Nunn collapsed Thursday of an apparent heart attack at his home in Versailles, about 60 miles east of Louisville, County Coroner Steve Ward said.

Elected in 1967, Nunn was the state's last Republican governor before Gov. Ernie Fletcher was elected in November. Nunn was a defining figure in Kentucky politics who asked no quarter on the campaign trail and gave none.
