The Utrobe Bulletin (-24-92 Pg. 15 Part Major Of Pirate Surge To Tom(lin) Terrific Tragedy Again Strikes Lions THIBODAUX, La. (AP) Detroit Lions' offensive lineman Eric Andolsek, killed when a truck careened through his front yard, was remembered by a former college teammate as a big leaguer who never outgrew his south Louisiana roots. "Here was a guy making great money in the NFL. He could have played 10 more years and he came back to said Shawn Burks, a linebacker who played at Louisiana State University with Andolsek in 1984-85.

"He built his own house, he moved right next to his mom and dad, and he still had the same friends from high schooL which says everything about the guy right there. He'll be missed." Andolsek, 25, was working with a weed cutter in his front yard on Tuesday when the truck ran off a straight stretch of Louisiana Highway 1, struck him and continued 400 feet before stopping, said Sgt. Hamilton Mixon, a state police spokesman. The vehicle was a big diesel truck cab, which was not pulling a trailer, and its driver apparently fell asleep at the wheel, Mixon said. The accident was still under investigation.

The accident happened about 1 p.m. at Andolsek's home in rural Lafourche Parish, state police said. Andolsek, 6-foot-2 and 286 pounds, was pronounced dead at 1 :54 p.m. at Thibodaux General Hospital, about a half-hour after he was brought in by ambulance, said Toni Martinez, a hospital spokeswoman. Truck driver James E.

Bennett, 34, of Baton Rouge, was charged with negligent homicide and failure to maintain control, Mixon said. Lafourche Parish officials said Bennett was being held under $50,000 bond pending his arraignment today before state District Judge Jerry Barbera. Andolsek, an avid outdoorsman, was a three-year starter at LSU before being selected by Detroit in the fifth round of the 1988 NFL draft. Andolsek played in 1 3 games as a rookie, then broke into the starting lineup before the 1989 season and played 50 consecutive games at left guard, including 1 8 last season. "We're obviously in a state of total shock and sadness," Lions' general manager Chuck Schmidt in a statement.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to (Andolsek's wife) Cheryl and all of his family." PITTSBURGH (AP) He's the talk of the National League, but Randy Tomlin will never be accused of talking a great game even though he's already pitched plenty for the division-leading Pittsburgh Pirates. "He'll never be a media darling because he's quiet and he doesn't strike out people, but I think the hitters around the league respect him," Pirates' manager Jim Leyland said. No fooling. So far, he's been Tomlin Terrific, one of just four 10-game winners in the majors and a huge reason why the Pirates have the largest lead of any of the division frontrunncrs. But how much longer can the left-handed Tomlin pitch like the original Tom Terrific Tom Seaver rather than the pitcher who won only 12 games in the majors in his first two seasons? How much longer can Tom-lin's across-the-body, around-the-world delivery continue to Bucs' Cole Makes Baseball History Softball 2 hits.

Ross Township police charged Hall, formerly of the Pittsburgh Slcclcrs, with breaking into his ex-girlfriend's apartment and stealing a television and stereo. The woman, Quintana Patterson, told officers Hall used a key to get into the apartment without her permission. 27, was apprehended June 17 at his home in Wex ford, the Pittsburgh Post- Gazette reported. A prelimin ary hearing is scheduled July 1. Ms.

Patterson told police she had been trying to end her relationship with Hall for several months, according to a police report. Hall signed with San Diego earlier this year as a Plan free-agent safety. He was roo kie of the year for the Stcclcrs in 1987. "TO way Tomlin (10-3) has hitters guessing has Leyland lobbying for him to pitch in the All-Star game on July 14 in San Diego. Clemens, Guzman, Tomlin? "The AU-Stargame? I want to go, I'd love to go, but I don't worry about that," said Tomlin, who two Junes ago was pitching in Class AA.

"I'm not trying to impress anybody. With the defense I've got behind me, I just try to go out there and throw ground balls and let my defense make plays." He did just that while checking St. Louis on seven hits over eight innings in the Pirates' 5-2 victory Monday. After a miserable 1-3 May, he's had a miserly June, going 5-0 with a 1.36 ERA. Overall, he's 10-3 with a 3.03 ERA and winning streaks of six and four.

Just like teammate Zane Smith, the 5-foot-10 (maybe), 160-pound (maybe) Tomlin excels in getting hitters to constantly hit ground balls. That plays right into the hands of Pittsburgh's defense. Of the 24 outs Tomlin managed Monday, 18 came either on grounders or strikeouts. "I don't go out there trying to strike out hitters I want them to hit the ball as long as it's right at our defense," he said. "I want them to hit it, I just don't want them to do too much." Leyland was so sure Tomlin would make life easy on his out-, fielders that his starting right fielder was Jeff King, who had never played the outfield before.

And Tomlin has been more like Seaver, except that he specializes in beating the Mets, not winning games for them. Of Tomlin's 22 career victories, seven have been over New York, including two just five days apart earlier this month. The way he's pitching, Tomlin will soon take his place alongside Bob Gibson, Steve Carlton and Juan Marichal in the Mets' media guide listing of the toughest pitchers ever against them. Still, Tomlin is so quiet and talks so softly, you'll never hear him trumpeting his own successes, hence his nickname of "Whispers." Maybe his motto is talk softly and quiet those who carry big sticks. "When you do hit him hard off him, you hit it right at somebody and that's the worst thing you can do against their defense," the Cardinals' Andres Galarraga said.

Tomlin has allowed only six earned runs in his last five starts, has had a 22-innings scoreless streak and has dominated left-handed hitters, who have only two career homers against him. Thanks to Tomlin, the Pirates has quieted all the talk that they couldn't repeat in the NL East without traded 20-game winner John Smiley. "I'm not trying to replace anybody or impress anybody," Tomlin said. "I just want to keep doing the things that keep you successful. All I worry about is keeping us in the game in my next start." mmaw i i i.

The Pirates already have played the Phillies 1 2 times, but their current series is their first ol the season against St. Louis. St.

Louis played the Cubs two home-and-home series before meeting Pittsburgh for the first time Monday. Asked the significance of not playing the Cardinals until late June, Pirates center fielder Andy Van Slyke said, "It means we play them 18 times in the final 94 games." "I don't know who made this schedule," Van Slyke said. "Maybe it was Ross Perot's computer company. Whoever it was, they're ripping the league off." Van Slyke was told the NL schedule contains several such anomalies because the Houston Astros have a 28-game road trip later this summer so the Astrodome can play host to the Republican National Convention. "Sure, blame the Republicans," Van Slyke said.

"They get blamed lor everything else." The Pittsburgh Pirates' pitcher has four count 'cm, four of them. Cole became the first Russian-born pitcher to start a game in the majors in 75 years when he pitched five-plus innings in the Pirates' 6-4 victory Tuesday over St. Louis. Cole, 24, was born in Leningrad and lived for four years in the former Soviet Union. He then moved to his father's native Sierra Leone, in west Africa, for four years, then spent two years in Canada before moving to the U.S.

at age 10. Cole struck out four and walked two in his first major-league start and fifth appearance. The last Russian-born pitcher in the majors prior to Cole was Rube Schauer, who was 7-16 for the Philadelphia Athletics in 1917. The other Russian-bom major league pitchers were Bill Cristall (1901), Jake Livingston (1901) and Schauer, who was born Di-mitri Ivanovich Dimkrihoff. Pirates' right-hander Bob Walk found a new namcplatc above his locker after he earned his first save in nearly two seasons: Eck.

Walk knows Dennis Eckcrslcy and he knows he's no Eck after all, he needs 23 more saves to match the Oakland Athletics reliever's AL-high total but Walk doesn't exactly feci uncomfortable in the role of latc-inning stopper. Pirates' manager Jim Leyland will use Walk out of the bullpen for the time being to prevent a recurrence of the groin problem that has put Walk on the disabled list five times in the last three seasons. "It's obvious that once I get around 50, 60, 70 pitches, I have problems," Walk said. "Until it gets better, we felt this was the right thing to do. It was as much my idea as it was Jim's." In a major-league career that began in 1980 with Philadelphia, Walk has pitched in just about every role there is: starter, long man, middle-innings reliever, mop-up man, spot starter.

Until settling into the Pirates rotation in 1988. Walk was used in so many different pitching roles that another change really doesn't affect him. "I'm willing to do anything, especially at this point in my career," he said. "I've got nothing to prove. I've been a starter, I've pitched when we were 15 runs behind, I've pitched when we were 15 runs ahead.

I've experienced about everything you can as a pitcher." Except being a stopper. "Eck doesn't have to worry about me," he said. Well, maybe he docs.
