devil now is quite academic and mercenary. The older and the less "progressive" peoples of the world have always seen their devils as horrendous but actual personalities; in the Western world the devil is more of a spiritual force, usually pictured as a handsome, suave fellow if pictured at alL Nevertheless, the count believes we still give the devil a good deal of consideration, if only as a scapegoat on which to pin our sins. IS a youth in Lithuania, Count S. A Colonna Walewski became absorbed in witchcraft and demonology, studied deeply in the books of the old phonies of the Middle One afternoon he went up to the attic of his home and with a piece of special chalk inscribed on the floor, the magic characters prescribed in a devil recipe and began, to intone the words which he hoped, and rather feared, would invoke one of the minor demons. He knew from his reading that the evil spirit might take any form, and he was prepared to fight off almost any monstrous apparition except what did appear his aunt, a devout woman who was horrified by his satanic exercises and saw that he was thoroughly punished.

He lost his taste for the practice of black magic after that but has never lost his interest in the devil and the devil's many shapes and forms. He deals now in devils commercially, in a shop whose door advises passers-by that here they may obtain anthropological curiosities. The strange objects in his place include old medical mannikins, from which the organs can be removed separately for study; ancient Egyptian, Etruscan, Indian, Chinese, Persian figurines; later bits of witchcraft apparatus like dolls to stick pins in, handbooks of spells and the like.
