if 4 Plight Of The Pirates The plight of the Pittsburgh Pirates this year, after such a fine showing last season, is keeping fans away from Three Rivers Stadium in record numbers. Just as winning often is the catalyst needed to boost attendance, losing usually does the opposite. Injuries to key players certainty have a lot to do with the Buc downfall this season but the most disappointing aspect of the situation Is the poor performances of those called on to be replacements. The Pirates, currently 21-33 (.389) with the second worst record in the majors (only Philadelphia is poorer), are not the only team playing with inadequate replacements. There are about 650 players in the major leagues and, unfortunately for the Pirates, some of them don't belong there.

Latrobe native Andy Gilbert, who managed In the minor leagues for many years with the Giants and also served as their major league coach and interim manager, said the talent Is spread too thin. "There are a lot of players in the majors who don't belong there," Gilbert told me the other day as we engaged In some casual conversation about the Pirates problems this season. And we both agreed that the Pirates have more than their share of players who are not major league talent. And if no fault of Manager Jim Leyland who has to make use of whatever talent is provided for him. Leyland Is finding out the hard way how difficult It is to replace players like Jim Gott and ytAike LaValliere.

And since both probably will be missing all or most of this season, the Buc chances of moving up in the standings appear slim. If not the kind of season the Bucs or their fans were expecting and, though If still early to write off the team for this year, mere will have to be some vast improvement by the current members of the roster to pull off any kind of miracle finish. -On the other side of the ledger, if nice to see the turnaround by the Baltimore Orioles this season. Remember last year when the Orioles started with a 0-21 record en route to posting the worst mark in baseball? This year the Orioles are riding high, their 31-23 record the best In baseball while leading the American League East. By losing 107 games last year, Baltimore won the right to pick first in the draft this year and supposedly got a gem in LSUhurler Ben McDonald.

For the first time since he was a Little Leaguer, Jon Peters of Brenham, Texas, went home a loser. Peters, who recently sef a national scholastic record of 53 straight victories, saw his team lose, 3-0, In the regional semifinals. Peters, who has signed a letter of Intent with Texas had not lost since the final game of his Little League career when Brenham bowed to Taiwan in the semifinals of the 1985 LL World Series. Peters led Brenham to its unprecedented third straight Texas Class AAAA baseball championship as a junior. -Switching to basketball, the Deny Area Club will be officially commemorated 10 a.m.
