EVANS, MARCH RAP JESTER FOR BALLOT LISTS, SURPLUS iy the United Preti Texts' their meeting with the voters only 11 days away kept i steady hand on the pulse today with i former gover nor and the state'i present chief executive catching the bulk of the candidate's ire. Gov. Beauford H. -Jester, however, missed much of the wordy criticisms thrown his way by the other candidates in the governor's race. Jester was attending the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, riding herd on his "stop Truman' Texas delegation.

He was on the receiving end of plenty of criticism from two pther gubernatorial candidates yesterday--Caso March, Baylor law professor, and Roger Q. Evans. March charged in Lufkin that ballots for the July 24 primary election had been "rigged' in favor of Jester and promised a "thorough investigation" into the arrangement of names on the ballot. He charged that Jester's name was first in "about 90 per cent of the cases" in ballots he had sampled over the state "I don't believe old curly locks could have been that lucky," he said. The law professor planned to visit Longview, Kilgore and "deep 1 East Texas" communities today.

EVANS HITS Evans, with a charge that "Texas teachers are having to borrow money to live on because the state hasn't paid off," took his campaign into East East-Gulf and North Texas communities. Scoring the present governor's administration for what he called its "get rich quick" $80 million surplus, Evans charged that "everyone can get rich that way- it's simple." The race for junior U. S. Senator from Texas--the. seat that W.

Lee O'Daniel declined to seek again- still drew its barrage of charges and counter charges with forme, Coke Stevenson receiving most of the attention. 'NO FoousH Stevenson, meanwhile, warned that "You are going to hear a lo of foolish and unfounded talk abou the Senate race" between now am the primary but promised that 4i will endeavor to make sure tha none of this foolish talk comes from Coke Stevenson." In a talk in Longview yesterday, the former governor said that he hoped the Democratic nationa platform, being drawn up at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, would declare in favor of state ownership and control of the tidelands. He also promised to work for reduction ol federal taxes. Meanwhile, Stevenson's two other opponents--tyndon Johnson of Austin and George Peddy of Houston were not idle. Peddy planned to hit the road today after a one-day rest at his Houston home, with his schedule calling for stops at Columbus, Schulenberg, La Grange and Houston and a radio address from Houston tonight at 6:45 o'clock.

Johnson planned to talk ig Navasota, Conroe, Cleveland, Liberty, Orange, Beaumont, Port Neches and Port Arthur today. PEACE-NO. 1 ISSUE In a talk at Bryan, the U. Representative said that "The one mportant thing in the world today peace, which can be won only through preparedness "Once again the cries of isola- Jon and appeasement are abroad this land," Jrvjison said. "Once more we hear pleas to dismember our armed services and use mothball planes for our air force.

New FOB Steel Plan Hikes Prices PITTSBURGH, July 13. new FOB mill pricing plan of Carnegie-Illinois Steel Corp. and the National Tube is in effect today.

A spokesman for the two subsi diaries of U.S. Steel said yesterday that consumers would start paying actual freight rates from the milk as of midnight last night. The company, in the past, quoted prices from "basing points" scattered about the country in an effort tc jqualize the cost of steel products to all U.S. consumers. The consumer paid freight charges only from the "basing point" which ususally was near his own mill.

A recent federal court order affecting the shipment of cement abandonment of the "basing point" plan, the company said. Although the new prices on car- oad lots are the same as charged under the basing point plan, many consumers now will have to pay more freight than in the past. E. E. Cockrell, M.

At the suggestion of County Judge Wiley Caffey, the court agreed to pay the cost of DDT spraying of unincorporated towns in the county, densely populated areas adjacent to, but outside the corporate limits of A'bilene, and to assist incorporated towns, if nec- and mosquitoes in the fight against essary, in an effort to control Hies polio. Dr. Cowgill reported that the city would permit the city-county health unit to use its "fogging" equipment to spray populated areas in the county at a cost of $10 an hour, which is the actual figure required to operate the machine. Areas deignated by the commissioners as needing assistance in DDT treatment were North Park and Sears additions, outside the ity limits, and possibly Bradshaw, Ovalo, and Buffalo Gap, unimcor- porated communities. The health unit director said that some of the incorporated towns, particularly Merkel and Tuscola, had already been "fogged" by the city's equipment and were due for additional treatment.

The health director reported to the court that "there was entirely too many cases of diptKeria last- winter and unless a great many' more immunixations are completed this summer and fall than have been thus far, we will have a great many more cases this winter." The health director reported two cases of typhus fever and one undulant fever case in the county. of premises in the typhus fever cases to reveal any rat infestations, he said, but the premises' were treated in to kill any fleas. The undulant fever victim wa found not to be a consumer of milk, but an employe in a packing plant and the Sector said it is presumed he contracted the disease from handling raw meat. The commissioners court Monday authorized the expenditure of money, equal to the amount now applied to the assistant county agent's salary, on the salary of an assistant county home demonstration agent, effective Sept. 1.
