PITTSBURGH (AP) Ted Simmons will be named today as the Pittsburgh Pirates' general manager, according to a published report. The Pittsburgh Poft-Gazette reported today that Simmons was en route Tuesday night to Pittsburgh from St.

Louis and would be given the job. Pirates spokesman Jim Lachi-mia would not confirm the report but said the team had scheduled a news conference for nooif. Simmons, 42, the St. Louis Cardinals' director of player development, would rejoin Pirates President Mark Sauer. The two worked together in St.

Louis, where Sauerwas an executive vice president for the Cardinals. Two other finalists, Cam Boni-fay and Bill Lajoie, said they had not heard from Sauer Tuesday. Simmons has supervised the Cardinals' farm system since 1988, when he retired from a 21 -year playing career. He was a first-round draft pick of the. Cardinals in 1967 after playing colle-giately at the University of Mi-chigan and Wayne State University.

After three seasons in the minor leagues and 10 seasons with the Cardinals, Simmons was traded in 1980 to the Milwaukee Brewers. He spent five seasons in Milwaukee and finished his career with the Atlanta Braves. Simmons, a switch-hitter, had a .285 career batting average. Initially, Sauer considered five candidates to replace Larry Doughty, who was fired Jan. 6.

Murray Cook, a former general manager for the Montreal Expos, Cincinnati Reds and New York Yankees, was eliminated over the weekend along with Oakland Athletics baseball administration director Walt Jocketty. Sauer said Monday the finalists were Simmons, Bonifay and Lajoie. Bonifay was Doughty's assistant and has been interim general manager since Doughty was fired. Lajoie, a former Detroit Tigers general manager, is close friends with Jim Leyland, the Pirates' manager. OFF By STEVE KITTEY Bulletin Sports Editor Making it as a major league baseball player is not an easy accomplishment but two Latrobe brothers are serving their apprenticeship in the minor leagues, hoping to eventually make the "big time." Robbi Guzik and Brian Guzik, sons of Rob and Sandy Guzik of Latrobe and both former baseball standouts for Greater Latrobe High School and Latrobe Legion teams, will be heading for spring training shortly to continue their baseball careers. Robbi, 22, drafted and signed by the New York Mcts in the June 1988 draft, recently was1 chosen American Legion Region 7 "graduate of the year" for 1992. Regional director Nat Codis-poti said Guzik was selected for the Region 7 honor which includes Westmoreland, Cambria, Clarion, Indiana, Jefferson and.

Somerset counties, the Tri-County League, Turnpike League and Westmoreland County leagues. Guzik's picture and 1991 stats will be featured in the 1992 Region 7 Guide Book. Robbi, a 6-3, 205-pound righthander, spent the first two seasons of minor league ball as an outfielder with the Mets farm teams in Kingsport (Appalachian League) and Pittsfield (New York-Pennsylvania League) before he requested a chance to try making it as a hurler last year. Though it's extremely difficult to make i move from an everyday position player to pitcher, Guzik made the transition successfully, first as a reliever and then as a starter for the Columbia Mets in the Class A South Atlan-tic League. Guzik will be leaving Latrobe Feb.

14 for the Mets Port St. Lucie (Florida) spring training site. He's one of a select group of players invited to camp two and one-half weeks early in order to have some extra preparation time. Guzik has had two arm operations, one in 1990 to repair ulner nerve entrapment and one this past November to remove calcium deposits and a bone spur. Guzik's father Rob, a scout for the Mets, said his son "came on real strong last season and the coaches feel he's a prospect which is why he's going to camp early.

He'll play in the Florida State League (high Class A) this Brian, 19, who also stands 6-3 and weighs 185 pounds, will be reporting to Mesa, Arizona March 10 to begin spring training for the California Angels' Quad City, Iowa farm team in the Class A Mid-West League. Last June Brian had the exact same surgery (ulner nerve entrapment) brother Robbi had, also to his right arm, and like Robbi ame through the operation well. Brian is a shortstop prospect and the elder Guzik said "this season will be a big year for him. They (the Angels talked about maybe trying him in left field or at first base but if he stays healthy and continues to swing the bat well, they will leave him at short." Echoing the words of his older brother, Brian also claims his confidence level is "high," noting "I have a lot of confidence now and it helps to know what spring training is all about." His goal this season is to "get out of Arizona and make it to Boise." As for female companionship, neither Brian or Robbi have steady girlfriends. "I'm not ready to settle down yet," Robbi offered.

Brian indicated he's keeping all his options open right now, saying "I used to have one (steady girl) but don't right now." A baseball scout for the past nine years, six with the Mets, Guzik was selected for the annual Johnny Murphy Scout of the Year Award last season. Guzik was honored at the annual New York Mets organizational meet-ing at Shea Stadium last September. Also a former Latrobe American Legion player like his sons, Guzik previously served as a scout with the Los Angeles Dodgers for one year and the Montreal Expos for two years. In his six years with the Mets, he has never had a player whom he signed released by the organization. Pens' Coffey Out With Hip Injury PITTSBURGH (AP) De-fenseman Paul Coffey has pulled a hip muscle and will miss the Pittsburgh Penguins game with the Rangers tonight in New York.

Coffey joins NHL All-Stars Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr on the sidelines. Lemieux has a herniated back muscle and Jagr was suspended for bumping a referee. "I pulled it about a week ago, and it's not getting any better," Coffey said Tuesday after missing practice. "It stiffened up again in the third period Monday" in a 4-4 tie with Detroit. "There's constant pain.

I couldn't even sleep Monday night. I was tossing and turning all night." Coffey ranks third among NHL defensemen with 60 points. He will be examined-tnday by tcamdocti Meets Greater LatrdbeJ)rganizationior Wrestling (GLOJvVTwill meVt 7:30 D.m. Feb. 6 in Room p-201 of the senior high school.

Robbi is looking forward to the start of spring training, probably moreso than any other year since he signed a pro contract. "My confidence is very high because of how well I did at the end of last season," Robbi told The Bulletin. "I want to be in the starting rotation at Port St. Lucie instead of being a In 1 3 starts last season, he ended with an 0-4 record but that statistic is misleading.

Because the coaching staff limits the number of pitches a hurler can throw in one game, Robbi had to leave the mound early and several times the relievers didn't hold leads for him. He pitched six, eight-inning games and hurled three, two-hitters. One of those two-hitters he lost to an opponent which held his teammates to just one hit. And Pirate fans might be interested to know that a player by the name of Dave Justice once went 0-for-3 against Guzik. Robbi admits he was "starting to get discouraged" when he wasn't getting in the win column, but he kept his spirits up most of the time and they were lifted when he was invited to the instructional league for the first time.

Though Robbi says you don't make that much money as a minor leaguer but he erioys the lifestyle, he also noted "it isn't as easy as a lot of people think."
