In two other Pennsylvania Conference games, Shippensburg quarterback Steve Muchowski threw three touchdown passes to beat Slippery Rock and quarterback Chris Crawford passed for three second-half touchdowns to rally Portland State over Indiana, the No. 3 team in NCAA Division II. In the Presidents Athletic Conference, Mark Craig and Larry Pitts combined for 202 yards rushing and three touchdowns to help Washington Jefferson remain undefeated and keep Thiel winless. Despite throwing five interceptions, Rich Pierce led Hiram with two touchdown passes and one scoring run in a PAC win over Grove City, while John Carroll erupted for three fourth quarter touchdowns to come from behind and beat Carnegie Mellon.

In the last PAC game played Saturday, Mansfield senior free Kings Win Third To Start Season Zembriski Captures Seniors' Vantage By BOB GREEN AP Golf Writer CLEMMONS, N.C. (AP) He's a working-class stiff who made it big in the elite world of big-time professional golf. "Yeah, I'm from the working class," said Walt Zembriski, a tough little man who spent 11 years as a steelworker before finding prosperity among golf's senior citizens. "I guess that makes me an underdog," he said. But he's an underdog no more.

He's now the winner of the most lucrative event on the Seniors PGA Tour, taking the first prize of $135,000 from the total purse of $1 million in the Vantage Championship. "I guess I'm going to need a good financial adviser," Zembriski said after his three-shot victory Sunday. "That's not something I'd ever thought of before." Zembriski scrambled for 10 years on the mini-tours, starting when he was 37. Then he hung around golf's fringes, playing in sectional events, getting a game where he could. When he turned 50, three years ago, he came out of the qualifying ranks to gain a spot in tour events.

And now, this year, he's won two titles and $327,928. "He's like Cinderella," said Al Geiberger, who won this title a year ago. "He's the guy who slipped through and is living out his dream. His win is for all those 50-year-olds out there who always dreamed about doing something else, something different, something spectacular," Geiberger said. Zembriski, called "The Z-Man" by his fellow tourists, needed only a final round of par 70 for his victory on the extremely difficult Vantage course at Tanglewood Park.

His winning total of 278 was two under par, and the only subpar total of the tournament. Dick Rhyan, who chased him most of the way in the cool, cloudy weather, bogeyed the last hole to drop back into a tie for second with Geiberger and Dave Hill. safety Troy Barbusca stopped a. In non-conference play, fullback David Shumaker rushed for 89 yards and a touchdown to lead Frostburg State to a victory over St.

Francis, and Greg Haski and Don-nie DeCarlo led eight Mercyhurst players to score touchdowns in the undefeated Lakers' rout of Buffalo State. Bluffton's Cliff Hemmert tied a school record with four touchdown passes and set a school mark for total yardage and wide receiver Andy Nowlin tied another school record with three touchdown receptions in a victory over Waynesburg. Bluffton, ranked ninth in the NAIA Division II, moved to 5-0, while Waynesburg fell to 1-5. INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) So far, all the expectations tagged on to the Wayne Gretzky trade have fallen into place and the unbeaten Los Angeles Kings are elated that the Great One feels "right at home." For the first time in the Kings' 22-year history they opened the season with three victories, two of them back-to-back overtime wins another Los Angeles first.

"The trade wasn't a one-man trade," said Coach Robbie Ftorek. "We have seven new guys and all the pieces are fitting together so far." Ftorek was gleaming after the Kings took a 6-5 overtime victory Sunday against the New York Islanders. That win followed a 6-5 overtime victory against the Calgary Flames on Saturday. Elsewhere, it was Boston 3, Hartford Philadelphia 4, Buffalo 3 in overtime; Quebec 4, Minnesota Edmonton 5, Winnipeg 4, and Toronto 8, Chicago 4. Marty McSorley, acquired by the Kings in the celebrated trade that brought Gretzky to Los Angeles, scored twice Sunday, including the goal which tied the score at 5-5.

"The Kings let me know that they were really glad to have me, McSorley said. "It gave me a lot of confidence to know I wasn't just thrown into the deal that I wasn't just a foot soldier." The Islanders threatened to crush the Kings in the second period, building a 5-2 lead. But goals by Ber-nie Nicholls and Gretzky 57 seconds apart breathed new life into the Kings. Nicholls scored with 1:11 to go in the second. Gretzky, whose goal and assist Sunday night gave him 10 points in three games, followed with an end-to-end rush that resulted in a 30-foot slap shot with just 14 seconds remaining in the period.

"We have a positive attitude and it's snowballing," Gretzky said. By The Associated Press It's back to business as usual bet- ween Westminster and Geneva. Brad Tokar ran for 216 yards and touchdowns as undefeated Westminster beat Geneva 39-0 Saturday, Westminster lost to the Golden Tornadoes last year for the first time in 38 years. The Titans are -rated second in NAIA Division II. "We played extremely well," Westminster Coach Joe Fusco said.

not quite as optimistic about us as others are. Our running game very sound, but our passing game jremains suspect." Make that a big bang. A bnng. Tom Purlzer won the finale Sun-rday, but it took an 8-under-par 64, an -eagle at the 72nd hole and a sudden death playoff to do it.

Purtzer, a 36-year-old player from -LaQuinta, washed away a mounting backlog of self doubts rwith a par on the first playoff hole -that shot down Texan Mark Brooks rand secured his third PGA victory in 13 years on the tour. The $72,000 first prize seemed almost incidental. "We all have doubts," said Purtzer, whose last triumph came four years ago in the Phoenix Open. "We all wonder. It's been a while.

I've been through a lot of stuff that wasn't much fun. "Who knows? This may give me the confidence to just go out and play my game." Purtzer reeled off three quick birdies, took the lead briefly with an outgoing 31 and knocked in a 25-foot eagle putt at the 18th green to put the finishing flourish on a 19-under-par total of 269. It all but assured him the championship trophy. And then along came Brooks, 27, a former University of Texas ace from Fort Worth who had held or shared the lead from Day One but had failed to keep pace in Sunday's torrid windup. He needed an eagle for a 67 that would tie and carry the tournament into a playoff.

He knocked his second shot to within 55 feet of the hole on the 562-yard 18th and it all came down to one putt. "I had a general idea of how the putt broke, but I got lucky and it went in," he said. His luck ran out on the par-4 15th, the first playoff hole, when he three-putted from 45 feet for the bogey that cost him the title. Purtzer two-putted from 25 feet for his winning par. "Tom played a great round and won My hat's off to him," said Brooks, a winner earlier this year at Hartford.

Purtzer's 64 brought him from three shots back Sunday and he said he suspected early on that only a sensational round would win it. "I knew it was going to be a shootout," he said, aware that 15 jlayers were within five strokes of lead entering the final round. "I nobody would back off." Cliff Robinson scored 19 and David Henderson 14 for Philadelphia, while Merser had 20, Barlow 19 and Kevin Magee 16 for Maccabi. Coach Zvi Sherf of the Israeli team expressed disappointment. "They played much tougher defense in the first but not quite as good in the second.

We got many more shots in the second half, he said. Sherf registered a mild complaint about the officiating. "I thought there should have been more 3-second calls," he said. "It seemed like Barkley was living in the lane." "I think we were a little excited and a little nervous in the beginning," said Barlow, who played in college at Notre Dame.
