24 Bengals Fall to Spartans, Host Maroons Tonight Determined Cats Outclassed by League Leaders By Mayo Ashley The league leading Missoula Spartans Friday night showed a capacity crowd at the Helena High School gym why they are on top as they used a 30-point third period to chalk up oh 80-53 win over the Helena Bengals. The next contest for the Cats will be tonight at 8 p.m when they host the fourth place Butte Central Maroons at the Helena High gym. In the Friday night contest the Bengals were outclassed but they certainly weren't outfought. During the tilt the Cats showed more hustle, spirit and desire in 32 minutes than they have in the entire season previously. Even at the end the Bengals refused to give up and from this point of view the game was a show of progress.

Out in Front Helena got away in front in the contest and at one point early in the game led 5-2. With 5:09 remaining in the first canto the Spartans went in front on a layin by Mike Lewis and they were never behind again. During the first period the Bengals had several chances to narrow the gap from the free throw line but they coudn't seem to take advantage of these chances and collected but five of a possible 12 in this manner. The Missoula club, on the other hand, used the charity chances to good advantage and pumped in nine of nine. This helped them to a 21-13 first quarter lead.

In the second period the visitors began to substitute freely and this, coupled with some bad passes and hustle on the part of the Bengals, narrowed the gap. With 6:30 remaining the score was 21-18 as the Bengals looked like they were going to make a game of it. This proved to be their last gasp, however, as the Spartans found the range and rushed to a 29-19 lead in less than 90 seconds. From there on to the end of the period the Spartans began to widen the gap and a 40-29 lead at half- they held time. Good Show During the intermission the Helena High twirlers presented a precision marching drill that was strictly big league.

In the third period the Spartans of coach Lou Rocheleau switched from the man to man defense they had employed earlier to a zone defense. This confused the Bengals enough to, give the Spartans the flying start "they needed and with little Hoyt Demers leading the way they blistered the cords for 30 big points and put themselves out of reach at 70-40 going into the final canto, With 4:06 remaining in the I third period Helena's Tom Weiss was waved to the sideline upon the collection of his fifth foul, and Bill Walter followed at 2:16. Substitute Freely At the start of the final period the Purple and Gold-clad visitors began to substitute their reserves and the Bengals did likewise. This Game This Morning Qreenies Lose to Saints, Matched With Bearers Anaconda The Anaconda Central (op-seeded Saints and Loyola of Missoula advanced to the finals of the Southwestern Class divisional tournament here Friday night, both taking hotly disputed victories. The Saints had to use reserve power to finally pull away from upset-minded Cathedral of Hel- During the night the Spartans were hot and the Bengals were ice cold from afield.

In the first half the visitors hit for 13 of 26 for an average of 50 per cent and in the second half they banged in 16 of 40 for 40 per cent. This adds up to a nifty 43.9 per cent average for the night. The Ben gals could garner but 29 per cent hitting on 20 of 69. They got 11 of 38 in the first half and 9 of 31 in the second period. From the foul line the Spartans picked up 22 of 32 for a 68.8 percentage figure while Helena got 13 of 39 for 44.8 per cent.

Rod Kovick with 12, Walter with 11 and Weiss with 10 led the Bengal scoring attack. Demers with 22 led Missoula and junior Doug Bachman picked up 17. In the preliminary game the Missoula junior varsity won a 6255 decision to score a clean sweep The little Spartans got away to a 14-4 first quarter lead and had no trouble from then on. They led 34-22 at half time and 50-38 entering the final period. Searles with 14 and Carpenter with 12 led Missoula.

Gary Eathorne paced the Helena attack with 13. He was followed by Tom Kuntz (10), Earl Hanson (3), Tom Daly (4), Jack Holt (3), Doug Feller (6), Jack Burton (9), Jim Phillips (2) and John Meyer (5). The win gives Missoula a 13-2 mark and the loss makes Helena's season record read 3-11. The summary: cna, 60-49 as both teams were hot on jump shots. Loyola emerged a 44-42 winner over Powell of Deer Lodge in a tilt that was tied most of the game and was in doubt until the final seconds.

Beavi liead of Dillon hung up an easy 77-37 victory over Stevensville in the consolation and advanced to the 9:30 consolation semifinal against Cathedral this morning. At 10:45 Hamilton and Powell squared off in the other morning game and the winners of the two games will meet in the consolation final at 7:30 p.m. Anaconda and Loyola will play for the championship at 9 p.m. A story on this morning's game between Cathedral and Beaverhcad of Dillon may be found on page 3. 24 13-26 21 61 For the Moment Missoula Takes A A Cage Lead By The Associated Press Missoula gained the Montana Class AA conference lead with a 13-2 record, a half game ahead of Great Falls, Friday night with an 80-53 win over the Helena Bengals. The margin appears to be short-lived, however. Great Falls, idle Friday night, takes its 12-2 record to Flathead of Kalispell (5-8) Saturday. The Bison could knock over the Braves with little trouble. If that game comes out as expected, Great falls and Missoula will be back in a tie for the lead and the final decision will be next weekend.

Next Friday Missoula travels to meet potentially dangerous Butte Public, the third place team with an 8-8 record. Great Falls will play surprising Anaconda (6-8) Saturday night in Great Falls. Anaconda upset two Butte teams in three days this week. Butte was a 33-41 victim Wednesday night and Butte Central fell 57-53 Friday night. All this may give Great Falls some reason for apprehension.

The Copperheads trailed the Central Maroons for three quar- teri before taking a 42-41 lead at the end of the third quarter. Officials called 98 fouls in the rough and tumble game. The Missoula-Helena contest was the only other game in the conference Friday. The only other game scheduled for Saturday.is Butte Central (8-7) at Helena (3-11). "I've had a cold all week," said the 5-foot-6 Los Angeles track club ace, "and haven't been able to shake it. I've been training in the rain, so- it's understandable. But it will be a good race." Beatty ran the mile in 3:39.9 on the boards In the Los Angeles Times meet two weeks ago and followed it with a 4:00.9 effort in the New York Athletic Club meet last week. That was his final warmup in his announced intention of breaking Delany's 40-race (34 at the mile) indoor streak. But Delany came up with a sore Achilles tendon in his left foot and he'd to withdraw.

He's finished for the season. Beatty has a modest indoor record of 12 straight victories going into the meet. Delany wasn't the only top- notcher to scratch.
