PAGE THE LATROBE BULLETIN SATURDAY. NOVEMBER 23, 1985 Luther's Jsfln Tune in Tomorrow Vieiivs by Jon-Michael Reed Pi story and entertainment form unique among any other means of communication. Despite the multitude of accumulated years among the six actors, it is interesting to note that Hastings is the only one who has been on "World Turns" for all of 25 years without a break. The others have either been canceled and then re-hired, or (in the case of For-sythe) have taken long leaves of absence to do other career projects in films and Broadway productions. Forsythe and Ms.

Bruder are unfortunately not current contract players; they appear sporadically on a day-player basis. But as executive producer Robert Calhoun notes: "As the show nears its 30th anniversary, I know that head writer Doug Marland certainly plans to use those people who represent the world of our show more frequently and wisely." It was an exciting pleasure to grow up with these six performers and the characters they portray. It will be a sublime comfort to grow old with them in coming years. SHORTTAKES: KIN SHRINER (ex-Scott Baldwin on "General has just completed filming a role in an upcoming movie titled "Vendetta." He plays a slimy, filthy, foul-mouthed prison guard, quite a change of pace from his recent role on the canceled series "Rituals." Kin celebrated the airing of the final episode of that series by having a cast party at his home. The episode depicted the characters 20 years hence, and everyone got a kick from Kin's character of all-.

The couple was wed last month at the Historical Wedding Chapel in Burbank, Calif. Cast mates from the show, Stephanie Williams (Amy), Susan Seaforth Hayes (Joanna) and her husband.

Bill Hayes, attended the private ceremony. Jon commented on the nuptials: "This was meant to be. Looking at Irene is like looking into a mirror. We've known each other for seven years; we're so much alike, and we're so in tune to each other." Tune in tomorrow to see who Jazz tunes into on (Send your questions about soap operas to Jon-Michael Reed, "Tune in Tomorrow," in care of The Latrobe Bulletin. Questions cannot be answered personally, but those of general interest will be answered in future columns.) How to prevent auto thefts SOUTHFIELD, Mich.

(AP) -Remember the basics of theft prevention when parking: lock the doors, close the windows and take the keys, warns the Automotive Information Council, which notes that more than a million vehicles are stolen each year. Park in busy, well-lighted areas whenever possible, it suggests, and use a variety of locations when regularly parking on a street. alcohol and drug abuse stemmed from peer group pressure. Civics students participated in a poster contest sponsored by the Regional Youth Service Center. The objective of the poster contest was to increase juvenile awareness of the juvenile court process.

The is putting on a search for a person who enjoys taking pictures and would like to do so for the on The new Cecilia is Alice Haining. an actress who briefly had the impossible task of taking over the role of Liza Colby on "All My Children" from original actress Marcy Walker. JOHN ALLEN NELSON (Warren Lockridge on "Santa has imported his bride-to-be to join him in California from Europe. John got engaged to Scandinavian model Ase Samuelson during a one-month vacation in Sweden last year. SAM BEHRENS (JACK MYERS on "General has split up with his wife, Dale.

The new lady in his love life is Nancy Grahn, who plays Julia Wainwright on "Santa Barbara." Another "GH" performer, Judith Chapman (Gin-ny Webber), has separated from her husband, writer Neilan Tyree, after less than a year of marriage. COUNT STOVALL has been cast as policeman Roy Franklin on "As The World Turns." Upcoming plans call for the character to have a romance with Heather Dalton, played by Tonya Pinkins. NEW YORK Performers generally have short life spans in today's soap operas, mainly because young actors use soaps as stepping stones to other career goals. This has been the case to some degree throughout the history of the medium. But soap actors of yesteryear continued playing the same serial character for an average of seven or eight years.

Today, it is more common to see actors split soap land after two years or less. In this age of rapid cast turnovers, it is indeed noteworthy that two of the original cast members of "As the World Turns," Helen Wagner and Don MacLaughlin. will celebrate the same number of years playing Nancy and Chris Hughes when the show marks its 30th anniversary next April. And four other performers are currently celebrating their 25th year of association with the CBS daytime program. They are Don Hastings (Bob Hughes), Eileen Fulton (Lisa Hughes McColI) and Patricia Bruder and David For-sythe (Ellen and David Stewart).

A quarter century before Luke and Laura were the rage, everyone who watched TV in the 1950s and '60s know who Lisa and Bob were, without the need to use their last names. They were soapdoms original "torrid teens," who have mellowed through the years as venerable Oakdale citizens, even though Lisa is as unpredictable as always. Nancy has remained a warm and caring, if occasionally irksome meddler and gossip, while Chris has always been a wise, solid rock of common sense and good judgment. Ellen and David were originally antagonists in a bitter natural-mother-vs. -adoptive-parents custody case over Ellen's illegitimate son, Dan.

We've watched them through their eventual marriage, and we've shared their trials and tribulations of raising-four children and assorted grandchildren. In fact, we've shared; we've eavesdropped; we have, in a strange sense, lived the varied lives of all six characters in an intimate, endearing manner in a By JON-MICHAEL REED NEW YORK-Love triangles are among the basic ingredients of any soap opera. One of the more interesting is currently developing on "All My Children." Brooke English Cudahy finds herself enamored of a dark, dashingly romantic Frenchman, Gilles St. Clair, who may or may not turn out to be a wandering wastrel when it comes to desirable women. Because her career as TV anchor is under pressure, a variety of circumstances forced Brooke to give custody of her adored infant daughter, Laura, to her ex-husband, Tom Cudahy.

From Tom's painfully nostalgic glances at Brooke, and her increasing appreciation of him as a model father and the kind of loving, decent man she shouldn't have allowed to slip through her fingers, it's evident that the couple has never really forgotten "the good times." The situation has all sorts of explosive potential, especially since Gilles' ex-flame, Solange, is itching to rekindle the fire. Add Brooke's back-stabbing TV co-worker, Bryan Sanders, and the possibilities are limitless. Of course, it helps that the performers are superb and a variety of personalities are involved. Actress Julia Barr's Brooke is alternately sweet and spicy, vulnerable and tough. Richard Shobcrg has the advantage of nearly 10 years of audience identification under his stalwart, gentle, naturally unforced portrayal of Tom.

As Gilles, actor Gilles Kohler is every inch the ideal romance-novel figure of an irresistible lover. And Curt May's Bryan is amusingly, haplessly devilish. If May looks familiar, it's because he's one of the most employed TV commercial actors in the business. He notes that he's celebrating his first anniversary on the show as a character originally intended for a one-week stint. Miss Barr reports that she "gets along famously" with "AMC" scriptwriter Lorraine Broderick's daughter, Ann, who plays baby Laura.

"I love her almost as dearly as my own infant daughter," says Miss Barr. Tune in tomorrow to see how this promising "AMC" plot SHORTTAKES: The newest addition to the cast of "Guiding Light" is Canadian actor Shawn Thompson, who plays a man simply known as Simon (and don't you know that anyone without a last name on a soap is bound to turn out to be related to an existing character). Thompson is well-known north of the border from his hosting duties of the Canadian Broadcasting Company's TV series "Switchback," a comedy-variety-video show geared for teens that airs Sunday mornings. He's also well-known in Toronto as a comedian who gets a lot of mileage out of weird, attention-grabbing publicity stunts. Wait and see if Simon gets weird with India on "GL." RECENT ADDITIONS to the cast of "Loving" include Dan Patrick Grady, who plays Spider Smith, Steve Sowolsky's prison cellmate.

Kathleen McCall plays Zona, the estranged and apparently deranged wife of Link Beecham. To Ligonier Borough water customers, from G.E Illmer. chairman of the borough's Municipal Water Authority, comes an explanation of water problems that affected many homes on the system: According to Illmer. "A water line pressure loss was discovered during a recent fire drill at Westmoreland McGinnis Hospital On Monday, a diver entered the reservoir and removed a badly corroded main inlet screen which was replaced. At 11 p.m.

Tuesday a relief valve was turned on in the vicinity of Ligonier Beach for pressure checking, without success. "We will continue to work to correct this problem which can cause cloudy water and, for short intervals, no water at all. Tests will be held to a minimum without prior notice. The authority regrets this inconvenience." Travelers who returned Thursday from a bus trip to Florida and a cruise to the Bahamas escaped most of the effects of Hurricane Kate. While hurricane warnings were posted last Saturday, the local group experienced "rough seas, a lot of wind and a little rain" that did not interrupt their journey.

Sponsored by the Laughlintown Multi-Service Center, the nine-day trip included a day at EPCOT and a visit to St. Augustine. The 23 persons boarded the SS Emerald Seas in Miami, spent three days in Nassau and a day at Stirrup Cay (while the ship was anchored off the island). Jane Shafer was group leader. Other travelers were Irene Naugle, Arthur and Jeanette Bell, Lillian Wineland, Alice Menzie, Doris St.

Clair, MaribeU Swasy, Florence Nicely, Chris Holman, Mary Morrow, Florence Coder, Violet Muir, Myrtle McCauslin, E.J. and Evelyn Irene Shisse, Margaret Osvath, John and Joy Speight, Edith and Merle Hay, Florence Cairns, Caroline Dunlap, Thomas and Helen Kelly, Oletha McAdoo and Grace Thornton. Fort Ligonier Post 734, Veterans of Foreign Wars, has installed outside lights beamed on the American flag flying over the post. Also tinder way is renovation of the kitchen in the post home. In accordance with Juvenile Justice Week, 34 students from the Ligonier Valley Junior High School took a field trip to the Regional Youth Service Center in Greensburg, recently.

The students were accompanied by Principal Carl Perian and civics instructor Charles Hurt They were given a tour of the Juvenile Detention Center while witnessing a mock juvenile trial. The day was highlighted by a female juvenile offender from the Adelpboi Village group home who candidly discussed what problems she encountered that placed her in Adelphoi and what she must do to be released Also, two inmates from the Regional No. State Correctional Facility were present to discuss the reason for their incarceration, prior life and environment All three speakers related that their problem began with a voluntary' basis. The membership committee would like to put together a slide show of the Y's activities to be presented at various service organizations in order to enhance the YMCA's membership. If you would like to get involved and take pictures, it would appreciate hearing from you.

Also the organization is looking for a donation of a 35mm camera (new or used), a slide projector and screen. If you would like to donate these items to the they would be gratefully received. Call the office at 238-7580 if you would like to help. John McKlveen, retiring school director, was presented a plaque Thursday from Pennsylvania School Boards Association in recognition of his 20 years of service.
