Rams 3 I I 1.000 102 12 By DOUG TUCKER AP Sports Writer KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -Pete Rose and Reggie Jackson were just two of the famous names George Brett erased from the record book. But most importantly for him and Kansas City, his remarkable 4-for-4 performance in the third game of the American League playoffs Friday night pulled the Royals back from the edge of an abyss and carried them to a 6-5 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. Brett hit two home runs, a double and a single.

He drove in three runs. He scored four. He made a great defensive play at third base to save a run. Almost singlehandedly, he enabled the Royals to come into tonight's fourth game of the best-of-seven series trailing the Blue Jays only two games to one. "I don't ever remember seeing somebody play a greater said Royals catcher Jim Sundberg.

"He was absolutely awesome." That was the word most frequently used to describe Brett's night. "Brett was just awesome all night long," said Blue Jay third baseman Ranee Mulliniks, who homered himself. Brett's home run off Doyle Alexander put Kansas City ahead 1-0 in the first. In the fourth, he doubled off the wall and eventually scored on Frank White's sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead. the pressure is on them." Ironically, it was a lucky bloop single by the holder of the team home run record that scored Brett with the winning run.

Facing Jim Clancy, the Blue Jays' third pitcher, Brett led off the eighth with a ground single past first Hal McRae sacrificed him to second and a ground out put him at third. Pat Sheridan was walked intentionally to bring up Steve Balboni, a frustrated slugger who was 0-for-ll in the playoffs. A moment later, Balboni hit a soft blooper that dropped between shortstop and center field as Brett crossed theplate. Steve Farr, with 4 1-3 innings of two-hit relief, took care of the rest. "It was a bad swing and a bad pitch to swing at.

You'd have to say it was a lucky hit," said Balboni, whose 36 home runs this year broke John Mayberry's club record. After losing the first two games in Toronto Tuesday and Wednesday, Brett said, the Royals knew Friday night's game was virtually do-or-die. "If we don't win tonight, we're really in bad shape," he said. "You could just dig the hole six feet deep and put in the coffin. But this gives us some momentum going into the next game.

It's not over yet by a long way." Tonight, Dave Stieb, 14-13 and the winner in Game 1, goes against Kansas City's Charlie Leibrandt, 17-9, the Game 1 loser. Then the Blue Jays delivered what could have been a knockout punch in the fifth. They chased Royals ace Bret Saberhagen with a five-run uprising, capped by two-run home runs by Mulliniks and Jesse Barfield, and the Royals faced the embarrassing possibility of having their postseason losing streak reach straight. Between the two Toronto homers, the Jays scored on Damaso Garcia 's double and a line drive single by Lloyd Moseby that struck Saberhagen on the ankle and bounced into left field. Saberhagen was in obvious pain but continued long enough to serve up a homer to Mulliniks.

In an even greater embarrassment, Royals Manager Dick Howser was on the brink of seeing his postseason managerial record sink to 0-12. But Brett would not be denied In the bottom of the fifth, Sundberg homered, slicing one run off Toronto's lead. And in the sixth, Willie Wilson singled and rode home on Brett's homer over the fence in left-center field, knotting the score at 5-5. "When it went to 5-5, 1 just knew the game was burs," said Brett, who had hinted at things to come by slugging five home runs in a decisive six-game span in the final week of the season. He finished the season with a career-high 30.

"I think the way we've played in the playoff series, we're the complete underdog," Brett said. "Now This is one of the most attractive college football weekends in some time. Nebraska leads the series with Oklahoma State 22-2-1 but the Cowboys, who blew second-half leads in the last two meetings, think this may be their year. "Our kids left Lincoln last year feeling we had a legitimate shot at winning the game," says Jones.

"We feel good about playing at night and in front of our fans. I think our fans can make a difference in the game." Since dropping its opener to Florida State 17-13, Nebraska has walloped Illinois 52-25, Oregon 63-0 and New Mexico 38-7. Nebraska's Tom Osborne calls the Cowboys "the best football team we've played. Trope said afterward that he was prepared to go to court to force the NFL to accept Davis, a fifth-year senior who was suspended by TCU this year for accepting money from boosters. "Given the threat of legal action by the agent for TCU's Kenneth Davis, we have authorized our attorneys to seek a court ruling in Davis' home state that this long-standing league rule is reasonable," the NFL said in a statement.

The NFL rule refers to Grange, the "Galloping Ghost," a University of Illinois halfback who, in 1925, signed with the Chicago Bears and played for them on Thanksgiving Day, immediately after the end of his college career. Browne said that although many requests for exemptions to the rule had been made most "recently one involving Don Holmes, a wide receiver from Mesa College in Grand Junction, Colo. no player since Grange had played both in college and in the NFL the same year. amnan Stoning At SKTVIEff SATELLITE 450 totroboDorry Rood loyofhanno. 2:51. Manager Midas leads LA By JOHN NELSON AP Sports Writer ST. LOUIS (AP) Everything the Los Angeles Dodgers touch seems to turn to gold, and at least part of the credit must go to Manager Midas, Tom Lasorda. Through the first two games of the National League playoffs, the Dodgers had negated the St. Louis Cardinals' most potent offensive weapon, speed, while beating their two 20-game winning pitchers, John Tudor and Joaquin Andujar.

At the same time, Los Angeles has prospered in all aspects of its own game pitching, power hitting and defense while adding a wrinkle here and there, courtesy of Manager Midas. Little things like a two-out squeeze bunt, stolen bases by guys who don't steal bases and a few well-timed pitchouts have helped the Dodgers prevail "Everything they do seems to go right," says Cardinals shortstop Ozzie Smith, who has been credited with some wizardry of his own from time to time. In the aftermath of all this alchemy, the Dodgers have a two-games-to-none lead in the best-of-seven NL series with Game 3 scheduled for today in St. Louis. Bob Welch, the Dodger righthander who went 14-4 during the season, was picked to start against St.

Louis right-hander Danny Cox, 18-9. The Cardinals were looking forward to a change of venue to change their fortunes. Unable to use their speed to its fullest advantage on Los Angeles' grass field, the astroturf of Busch Stadium is perfectly suited for the likes of speedsters Vince Coleman and Willie McGee. "It didn't work out in Los Angeles, but being at home should be different," Cardinal outfielder Cesar Cedeno says. "We know we can bounce back.

That's the way we made it to the playoffs." Catcher Darrell Porter called the Cardinals a team perfectly matched with the artificial surface, saying that Manager Whitey Herzog "is a master at buildjng a team for. a particular ballpark." "We don't have a lot of home run power, but We've got a lot of gap hitters, and guys who run," Porter said. "Playing at home gives you a little confidence edge anyway." Lasorda disagreed with any suggestion that something must have gone wrong with the Cardinals. "I think you have to give our club a little credit, especially for stopping them in that first inning," Lasorda said, "and you also must remember that our hitters hit the ball pretty well when we had men on base. "I think you should be giving credit to our club rather, than trying to point at what they didn't do." 'Red Grange Rule-stops Davis' entry By HERSCHEL NISSENSON AP Sports Writer -Oklahoma State has one of the nation's up-and-coming football programs and the question is whether the Cowboys will get their annual comeuppance from Nebraska.

Pat Jones is only in his second season as OSU's head coach but he is well aware that it has been 24 frustrating years since Oklahoma Slate last defeated Nebraska. Do the Pokes have a phobia about the Qornhuskers? "I don't think so, but we're getting awfully close to it," says Jones, whose fifth-ranked Cowboys entertain the ninth-ranked Cor-nhuskers tonight. If lightning is to strike twice where 24-year precedents are concerned, all Jones has to do is remind his players that Iowa hadn't been ranked No. 1 in the Associated Press poll from 1961 until last week. In another night game involving two members of the AP's Top twenty, 16th-ranked Southern Methodist plays host to No.

(AP) Running back Joe Cribbs has re-' joined the team that made him famous the Buffalo Bills and he says he hopes his presence rejuvenates the winless National Football League "I know these guys are capable of playing," Cribbs said Friday, shortly after his contract signing was announced. "It may take a little time, but we've got 11 games left. 'A Coach Hank Bullough said Cribbs won't be playing against the New England Patriots in Foxboro, on Sunday because he has to learn the Bills' offensive system, which has. changed since he teftyi and he isn't in physical condition for a game. "Cribbs, the Bills' leading rusher from 1980 through 1983.

around football team, but I think Oklahoma State is better." Every other year and this is one of them Baylor and SMU play in Dallas and take a back seat to the Oklahoma-Texas shenanigans. "I've been mildly irritated that through the years we have had to play second-fiddle to the Texas-Oklahoma game," says Baylor Coach Grant Teaff. "A lot of times we have the much better game but nobody seems to know it. I'd like to see the game get more recognition." Teaff also says it is "not the best time to be playing a team with outstanding talent like SMU" since the Mustangs are coming off a 28-6 loss to Arizona. "We're catching them when they are going to be mighty mad." Scholastic grid results NEW YORK (AP) All-America back Kenneth Davis of Texas Christian University has run into a stone wall in his attempts to join the National Football League this year. While blocking Davis Friday, the NFL also filed a suit in Fort Worth asking a Texas State Court "to confirm the legality" of the league rule which prohibits athletes from playing both in college and the NFL the same year. "We're not seeking any injunction. We're not looking for any monies," said Joe Browne, the NFL's director of information. "We're just asking the court to make a declaratory judgment."
