Akron, you say? The fact is that the so-called "Rubber Capital of the World" headquarters for three of the biggest tire-makers can offer a variety of attractions, some of which can be far different than one would expect. There is, for example, Stan Hywet Hall, a 65-room manor house completed in 1915 and considered one of the country's finest examples of 16th century Tudor Revival architecture. Open to the public daily except Monday, the mansion was built by master craftsmen brought from Europe by owner Frank A. Seiberling, founder of Goodyear Tire Rubber Co. Molded plaster ceilings, heraldic stained-glass windows and halls of hand-carved oak and walnut serve as the setting for antiques and art treasures dating back some 400 years.

There are furnishings acquired from a dozen castles in England and Europe as well as antique silver, della Robbia plaques.pewter, Flemish tapestries and a room with rare musical instruments, inchiflinu a harpsichord played by Haydn. The mansion is located inside a 65-acre parklike estate with numerous flower gardens including roses, irises, peonies and others, and displays of 20,000 varicolored tulips in the spring and 6,500 chrysanthemums in the fall. (There is an admission fee). About five miles away, in Northampton Township, is the 570-acre Blossom Music Center summer home of the world famous Cleveland Orchestra which offers a diverse schedule of musical events from June to September in a beautiful outdoors setting. Programs include pops and symphony concerts, ballet, opera, rock, soul, folk, jazz and country and western music.

Popular with area residents as well as tourists is the Goodyear World of Rubber, an ejtiabff that draws upwards of 25,000 visitors annually Free guided tours are con-- ductedMonday through Friday, with' the exception of holidays. The exhibit, opposite the company's headquarters, features the Charles Goodyear Memorial Collection, paintings and personal mementos of the discoverer of vulcanization, which had formerly been exhibited in the Smithsonian Institutional Washington, D.C. Other interesting exhibits include an animated figure of Goodyear in a replica' of his workshop, an artificial heart, a display of the first moon tire, a simulated rubber plantation and displays depicting rubber-makingandtire-makingproces-, ses. Visitors also may tour the plant and watch tires being manufactured.FirestoneTire Rubber Co. also has an exhibit, and tours usually can be arranged in advance.

For sports-minded travelers, Akron has more than 25 public and private golf courses, and 'the Portage Lakes State Park for boating, fishing, swimming and picnicking. It is also, the site of the Firestone Country Club, where top pros compete annually 'in July or August for top honors in the $150,000 American Golf Classic, and the winners of the Masters, U.S. and British Opens and PGA tournaments meet in the $77,500 World Series of Golf in September. Akron is only about 30-minutes drive from the Pro Football Hall of Fame located off 1-77 In Canton, heading south. And it is only a short drive north to Cleveland with its professional baseball, football, basketball and hockey teams and other activities'.
