Name Firemen WTU My MRS SIM COTTELIE Rcperter-Newt Correspondent BALLINGER Feb 19 (Spl) The nsme of Chester Cherry is synonymous with two things in Ballinger the West Texas Utilities company and the Ballinger fire department Cherry hai been District distribution superintendent for the utilities compsny since 1924 He Joined the fire department when he came to the city in 1909 and is still a member He was fire chief from 1932 until last week He resigned that post last November on advice of his physician but the department asked him to remain chief until the new fire truck was delivered Hia last official act as fire rhief wai riding in the new truck in a parade given in hit honor Cherry'a first term as fire chief was in 1917-'18 while Chief Cohen was in military service lie served one term as a member of the board of directors of the Texas A A firemen's training school and has been president of the Volunteer Firemen's and Fire Mar shals' association of Texas He attended the International Fire Chiefs' convention in Chicago in 1942 Although active for years in Ballinger civic affairs Cherry's main interest is seeing that his area has proper electric service He has taken three vactions dur ing his 24 years of service with WTU He and Mrs Cheijry visited a Old Mexico in 1925 for eight day's Second absence was in 1938 when he was ill and his doctor advised rest The summer of 1946 found him with a slight heart ailment and he had to take another rest Since fulfilling that he is back on the job Mr Cherry was born on Jan 15 1882 at Denver and while young started to work for his father who operated a sawmill and a flour mill and dealt in tobacco flour ami lumber When he was 16 he started driving a logging team lor his falher and continued at other jobs in the logging ramps until he came to Texaa in 1900 When he moved to Hunt county he was greeted by a smallpox epidemic which created his first Job of a guard at the detention camp located on the outskirts of Wolf Ctiy In 1901 Mr Cherry and his brother purchased a (brisk-ing machine and he worked with that a short time -Wolf City's first light plant wai being installed so Cherry wai cm ployed as engineer at SI per day with a negro as his assistant He was soon given the Job of manager his salary was raised to $45 per month Several years later he wai cm ployed by the Santa Fe to install electric headlights to replace the old kerosene lights on locomotives and worked as a fireman on an en gine for a short time The panic of 1908 ended his railroad career and he returned to Hunt county to OF RALLINGER GOVERNOR JAMES ALLRED TEXAS GOVERNORS CHESTER CHERRY find a job While living at Greenville he rereived a wire from Oscar Fear-son of Ballinger asking him to take over the distribution system of the Ballinger Power and Light company Oil April 1 1909 Cherry went to work on these iinrs and hai been working on them most of the time since that date In 1916 Interstate Flcrtrir corporation purchased the Ballinger properties The following year Cherry returned to work for Ballinger Cottnn Oil company and was placed in charge of power for the oil mills and gins in 1921 he went bark to work for Interstate as manager of the plant In 1924 when WTU purchased the proper ties he was employed on hia present job as District distribution superintendent Mr and Mrs Cherry built a beautiful rock home on Sixth Street in 1935 In their out-door sitting room is a Urge table made of steel and concrete From this 1300 friends have been served in the past nine years In the center of the table lop if a tile design which Robert Lee Bobbitt by 128000 votes That was the beginning of a friendship which still exists between Bobbitt and Allred His four years as attorney general were tumultuous He filed the state's biggest
