PAGE TEN THE ABILENE REPORTER-NEW 'SKELETONS" DANGLED ON FRONT LAWNS-- Tune In On KRB0 Bimday Morning, March 2G, 1939 Drive Down One Street-It Might Be Any 5t reel-Discloses Blots to City Beautiful Bjr MAURINE ROE the street, We're going to march the sliele- 'toru right c'H on front lawns and dangle them from gnarled mes- qultes on weed-tangled vacant lots, This is the story of one street, end to end. Thts reporter drove (he length of that street, and wrote down those things which could be regarded as blots on any cUlm Abilene might make as a "City Beautiful." Any street, It seems, taken Its full lengts. Is proof that Abilene does need a Cleanup-Palntup-Fix- VP campaign, This might be any street, but the fact remains that is one given streeU--the one on which you may happen to live, It is a street on which there are few places of business, on which there are numerous prosperous homes, and some that are less pretentious. Another point Is that It Is typically Abilene--before the spring cleanup campaign gets underway. This Is the unretouched picture of that street, as It was recorded the reporter's scratch pad.

Pretty house, but the roof and frames need paint. Grass iWould help that big yard, and trimming the trees would be a Idea. More shrubs around the house would make It more attractive. Vacant lot, with catclaw bushes getting a good start. Burned spots where someone once made an effort to clean up.

Here are a few of the suggestions vhlch have been made by work- jrs who have given serious study lo the value of a community-wide Two fast growing shrubs, or a trellis and vines can be used effectively to conceal the.cans used for incinerators. These trash cans should be on the property line, not out In the alley. Nothing ours an otherwise beautiful yard and home like an unsighlly alley scene. Vacant lois plowed once a year look much better than lots which receive no altenlion at all. A still better method Is lo use rate and hoe, pile the trash and have it burned.

If It isn't, it should be against the law for any person to dump trash, cans or garbage of any vacant lot. There is one sandwich sUnd which has all the papers picked up by an odd-job man every day. There may be others following: a similar program, bu( in the most part paper napkins and other (rash blowing from sandwich stands make a cleanup problem for large adjoining areas. Fences in repair make an attractive frame for yards. Paint not only makes a house more attractive it increases its value.

By MOItKY President, Abilene Iteal Eslale Board Most cleanup- palntup and fix- up work done In Abilene during the city-wide campaign be done because ol the personal satisfaction each ol us gets out of seeing our O'AII homes and their surroundings beaulllled. It appeals to our pride and gives a sense of well being that Is extremely pleasant to see our homes blossom out In a new of paint, and our yards become a more harmonious selling for the "House Beautiful." But we we cnnsidercd the actual cash value we are adding to these homes taking mch steps. It has been conservatively estimated that a nen' coat of paint adds twice Its cost to the sale value of the house. Landscaping (he ot In pleasing lines has an even greater ratio on enhancement In sale value. When we consider these actors the expense we encounter making such improvements will lot loom so large on our budget lorizon.

There Is In addition, the element of preservation, or retarding ")1 physical depreciation In a prop- by making necessary repairs when they are needed. One coat paint this year may save put- Ing on two coats next year, or the year after, and thus cut the cost ot repair. Fixing the "broken step" low might save building a new one few months hence. These things are obvious, but they are things we overlook. Since we have become accustomed to seeing the house in its "patntless" condition, we no longer notice that as being unusual.

We have skipped that second so long because it was broken that we have forgotten its need of repair, and now we go from the. first lo the third step as automatically as it the steps Modest Income Purchases Home The construction of substantial, sanitary, and comfortable types ol shelter within the means of fam- built wilh a skip in (hem. a must do Is look at our homes through the eyes of 3 stranger; slare at them is though we had never seen them before and let our natural talent for criticism have a rein. In that manner we will find plenty of faults to correct. Painting to be done, repair that needs attention, and cleaning up that demands action.

Pointing out that FHA seeks encouragement through every means of greater production such houses, Mr. McDonald declared that it cannot and does not furnish "stock" or "prepared" plans for general use. The FHA has localized its own minimum standards, and It encourages Uie use of architectural and other professional services by builders and owners of low-priced dwellings.

"Tiie desirability of maintaining and developing heal traditions and of producing housing suitable to local topography and climate needs no argument," Mr. McDonald said.
