Chess Not A Sport Does anyone in the sports world really care about the outcome of the Bobby Fischer-Boris Spassky world championship chess match? All that confusion over Fisher's ridiculous refusal to show up on time and the senseless publicity it received turned us off completely. Someone asked us what we thought of chess as a sport but we couldn't think of too much to say at the time. After thinking it over though, we say chess in not a sport but rather a game and there is a very big difference. Deiyiy Miscik of Mt. Pleasant (Norvelt), standout quarterback and pitcher, still hasn't made up his mind whether to pursue pro baseball (Cincinnati Reds) or college football (Pitt). Miscik said he'll see how well he does in the state American Legion All-Star Game set for Harrisburg on Aug.

5. If he doesn't sign a baseball contract, Miscik will appear in the Big 33. game. Remember the famed McKeesport Little Tigers midget football team and their star player of eight years ago, Gerald (Puddin) Grayson? The McKeesport school board recently hired Grayson as a physical education instructor at the elementary level and he has applied for an assistant varsity coaching job. Grayson, only 5-3, 142, played three years of football at Boise College of Idaho but sat out his senior year.

WALKER SAFE AT THIRD Getting the safe sign from the third base umpire is Latrobe Little League All-Star Daver Walker who advanced on a ground out to first. Walker later scored but Latrobe eventually lost to Dunbar, 3-2, and was eliminted from the District 27 Playoffs. (Bulletin) Blairsville 15-2 Front-Runners Take D-U Wins Yesterday proved unsuccessful for Latrobe and Derry teams in the District 27 Little League Playoffs. First round action saw the Latrobe Little League All-Stars bow to visiting Dunbar, 3-2, while the Derry Little League All-Stars were beaten by host Mt Pleasant, 6-3. The Bulletin did not get a report on the Bullskin Township at Blairsville game.

The wins vault Mt. Pleasant and Dunbar against each other at Mt Pleasant 6:15 this Saturday while Connellsville, which had a first-round bye, will host the winner of the Bullskin-Blairsville game. The District 27 Championship will be held July 19 at Derry Little League Field. Dunbar took a 2-0 lead over Latrobe in the first but Latrobe came back in the bottom of the inning to cut the deficit to 2-1 and tied the score in the fourth. However, in the top of the sixth, Dunbar pushed across the winning run and held off a Latrobe rally in the last of the sixth which saw Latrobe retired with the bakes loaded.

Bob' Lehman hurled the Dunbar win, giving up five hits and striking out five. Ron Jakubovic, who fanned five and allowed seven hits, was the losing pitcher. Jeff Cmar had two hits to lead Latrobe. For Dunbar, Bob Astelford had three hits and Mark Pund had two. Russ Costolo, of Dunbar had a double for game's only extra-base blow.

Derry's Tim Street suffered the loss to Mt. Pleasant with relief from Lon Lowman. Doug Ballman and Mike Wingard each had two hits for Derry. Houston Astros Just as Philadelphis City Schools did last year, Pittsburgh City Schools are seriously considering dropping their athletic programs this coming year because of increased expenses. Philadelphia and Portland, Ore. dropped school sports last year in preliminary budgeting but drives to get athletics restored resulted in an llth-hour reversal in both cities. Only last month, Pittsburgh City Council passed a bill authorizing close to $600,000 for installation of lights at 16 parks, including baseball fields, basketball courts, playgrounds and tennis courts. The lights are expected to be installed before this fall.

On the subject of lights, in past years we've publicly asked several times for someone to give us a reasonable explaination why the lights at Fourth Ward (Irving Ave.) and First Ward basketball courts can't be put to 'good use. So far we have no answer. The item in yesterday's Korner concerning Kevin Luttner's long jump included a typographical error. It should have read 21 feet. Greater Latrobe apparently will start football practice Aug.

21 like every other school and not 10 days earlier as some rumors have it. GL school officials have let the WPIAL known they are unhappy with the late starting date but must conform to the WPIAL rules or face probation or explusion from the league. 1 What was once a one-team race for top honors in District 31 American Legion Baseball Eastern Division" has now turned into a wide-open chase among four foes. Latrobe Legion, atop the standings since the beginning of the season, was handed its third straight setback last night by host Derry, 1-0, to drop it to 8-4 and allow Mt Pleasant to move into a first-place tie with Latrobe. Red-hot Greensburg moved into contention with a 6-2 win over Youngwood while South Greensburg also remains in the running.

Derry's Gene Ruffner and Latrobe's Jerry Yandrick couldn't have been more evenly matched, each giving up just two hits. However, the second hit off Yandrick was the fatal blow, coming in the bottom of the seventh with two out. Third Baseman Terry Giannini, with two strikes on him, smacked a long drive to the gap in left-center in the seventh to send Ron Ruffner home with the winning run. Ruffner led off the seventh with a walk, took second on a passed ball and easily raced home on Giannini's blast. In the second inning, Giannini almost drove in the winning run with a long fly to right field.

But Latrobe's Tim Kozusko made a perfect throw to the plate to nip Randy Naggy trying to score from Ron Ruffner had Derry's only other hit, a single. The two hits for Latrobe were singles by Kozusko and Mike Soohey. Yandrick struck out 10 in the losing effort while Gene Ruffner fanned four. Yandrick walked three and Ruffner walked Greensburg hurler Larry Kienzel struck out 13 while allowing only two hits against Youngwood. Kienzel also drove in two runs wifJi a double.

Latrobe Legion tries to get on track tonight when it hosts South Greensburg at Legion-Keener Field. Jay Lavin is scheduled to pitch for Latrobe. Mt. Pleasant is at Greensburg while Youngwood plays Derry at Amvets Field. Derry will host Mt Pleasant 6 p.m.
