Everyone Takes Part In Key Hunt A key to East Alton Charles Vanpreter's office was the subject of an all-out search by two village officials Tuesday night which ended with a call to Deputy Clerk Mildred Helm. It seems the salary ordinance for the fiscal year May 1 was tucked in er's office while the mayor was on a fishing trip. Trustee Frank Keasler and Clerk Lawrence Darr began the search for the key which should have been in a key box in a vault in Darr's office. It wasn't.

The problem started when village trustees met a at the village hall for their regular meeting of which the salary ordinance was a major item. Village Attorney Francis Manning was asked for the ordinance, but said he had given it to the police department. A call to the police station by Trustee Keasler revealed the de. partment had given the ordinance to Vanpreter's secretary who placed it on the mayor's desk. Darr and Keasler entered the vault and secured the "key box." "I thought it might have slipped off its key hook and fell down in the bottom of the key file, but it didn't," said Darr.

After searching for 15 minutes, Darr decided to call his deputy clerk who told him she had locked the key in a drawer in his office. The key was obtained, the ordinance was found, and Keasler strutted into the conference rooni where the trustees meet with ordinance in hand.
