(AP Wtrephoto) AH, Ellis Set For July 25 Collision By BRUCE LOW1TT Associated Press Sports Writer NEW YORK (AP) Four years ago Muhammad AH was heavyweight champion of the world and Jimmy Ellis was his sparring partner. When the title was taken away from Ali for his refusal to accept military service, Ellis battled his way to the World Boxing Association's version of the crown--before losing it to current champ Joe Frazier.

Today the two former champs from Louisville, both aiming for another shot at Frazier, will announce that they'll go against each other first, reportedly in a closed-circuit bout July 26 at the Houston Astrodome. A spokesman for Bob Arum, president of Top Rank, said today's noon news conference, and Ellis present, would finalize "a major fight," but declined to give details. Last Thursday, however, Ali jumped the gun by saying he would meet Ellis in seven weeks. Arum has been involved in the closed-circuit televising of several heavyweight championship bouts and Top Rank handled the AH-Oscar Bon- avena fight last Dec. 7 at Madison Square Garden.

U.S. Chessman Seems Headed For 6-0 Sweep VANCOUVER, B.C. (AP) The sixth game in the series to select a challenger for the World Chess Championship adjourned here Tuesday with U.S. Grandmaster Bobby Fischer holding a strong lead. At adjournment on the 43rd move, Fischer was two pawns ahead of Soviet Grandmaster Mark Taimanov and it appeared only the formality of Taima- nov's resignation was needed Wednesday.

The victory would give Fischer a 6-0 sweep in the best-of-ten-game match. Winner of the quarter-final elimination match will meet Danish Grandmaster Bent Larsen in a semi-final game of the challengers' playoff. The winner of the challenger series will meet world Boris Spassky of the Soviet Union for the title. Evansville QB Joins Denver DENVER, Colo. (AP) The Denver Broncos have signed quarterback Craig Blackford from the University of Evansville in Indiana.

He is the sixth quarterback signed by the Broncos. Blackford, a native of Tell City, was the National Football League team's 13th draft choice. Blackford, who stands 6-foot-3 and weighs 220 pounds, was a three-time All-Indiana Collegiate Conference quarterback and was voted the league's most valuable player last year. Shero To Assume Reins Of Flyers PHILADELPHIA (AP) The Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League will announce today the appointment of veteran minor league coach Fred Shero as their new coach. Shero, 46, succeeds Vic Stasiuk, 42, who was fired by Flyers' General Manager Keith Allen last Thursday.

Under Stasiuk, the Flyers finished third in the NHL's Western Division this year and dropped four straight to the Chicago Black Hawks in the playoffs. Ali won that one with a ISthround knockout--but lost his hid to regain his championship when Frazier won a unanimous 15-round decision March 8 at the Garden. Ellis, at 31 two years older than his longtime friend Ali, won the WBA share of the heavyweight crown on April 27, 1968 with a victory over Jerry Quarry. But Frazier owned the rest of it, recognized as champion by New York and several other states. He finally settled the issue Feb.

Nicklaus, who has made only nine previous starts this year, has been out of action the last three weeks and is making his last competitive appearance More Witnesses To Get Call In Grand Jury Probe CLEVELAND, Ohio (AP) More witnesses were scheduled to be heard today by a federal grand jury here which resumed its probe Tuesday of the National Football League for possible antitrust violations. The jury held only a morning session Tuesday to hear testimony from Chicago Bears assistant coach Abe Gibron before conducting other business in the afternoon. Gibron's testimony was the first before the jury since it recessed May 6 after hearing from George S.

Halas 76, owner and founder of the Bears, and from Bert Rose, 51, an assistant to NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle from 1964 and 1967. The jury, which has centered its probe on alleged blacklisting in the NFL, began its investigation last November. It is scheduled to meet again Thursday before recessing until September. Even with his restricted schedule, Nicklaus easily ranks as the premier performer for the season. the only threetime winner, is the leading money winner with more than $131,000 and has taken down the first prize in his last two starts--the rich Tournament of Champions and the Byron Nelson Classic. The powerful, 31-year-old superstar, who has spent most of the last three weeks coaching his son's Little League baseball team in Florida, wasn't scheduled to arrive until today. l.ee Trevino, another top contender in the 72-hole chase that begins Thursday on the hill, par-72 Atlanta Country Club course, also was scheduled for a late arrival. Trevino, who scored his second victory of the season last week with an easy triumph in the Danny Thamas Memphis Classic, is the No.

2 money winner of the season with more than $115,000 and appears to be at the top of his game. He's finished fourth or better seven times this season and, more importantly, has played steadily for several weeks. Some other top challengers include South African Gary Player, England's. Tony Jacklin, the U.S. Open title-holder who is making his first start in five weeks, Masters king Charles Goody, defending champion Tommy Aaron and such two-time winners this season as J.C.

Snead and Tom Shaw. Also on hand are always-dangerous Frank Beard and Dave Hill, the controversial player who last week filed a $1 million damage suit against the PGA and the Tournament Players Division. Among the missing in the ISOman field are Arnold Palmer, Billy Casper and $100,000 winner Miller Barber. American-Owned Mill Reef Looks 'Right' At Epsom EPSOM, England (AP) All the color of a 192-year-old tradition was set up on Epsom Downs today as race fans got ready to cheer American-owned Mill Reef to victory in the Derby. Tipsters, fortune tellers and sideshows--the features that have made Derby Day fun for the British ever since 1780-- were there as usual.

Only the prospects of the race itself were slightly different. Mill Reef, owned by Pittsburgh business executive Paul Mellon, was rated the strongest favorite in years. Tuesday night, bookies made Mill Reef 7 to 2, The Parson 17 to 2, Mille- nium 11 to 1, Bourbon 12 to 1, Lombardo 14 to 1 and Linden Tree 16 to 1. Yet the course--1'A miles long and horseshoe shaped--is longer than Mill Reef has ever raced in public. The only doubts hung on whether Mellon's horse could keep up the pace that far.

The 21 horses--all three-yearolds, according to Derby tradition--have to race down a slight dip at first, then up a long and steady incline. That's where the lesser horses begin to feel the pace. The prizes are $147,900 for the winner, $43,476 for the unnerup and $21,256 for third place. HEY!
