Maconaquah recently won the Mid-Indiana Conference meet, with Northwestern third.

But the Tigers turned the tables this time. Four of Northwestern's "first five" broke 85 in the victory. Andy Smith, the Braves' No. 5man, had an 84. Northwestern takes on Oak Hill at Green Acres on Thursday.

Dirk Hankins struck out and Gaines scored on Huffman's infield hit. Mike hit the ball in the hole at short and beat the throw to first. The Kats, however, left the bases loaded. Bruce Liggin tried to check his swing, but bounced out to second.

Gaines opened the sixth by doubling over the leftfielder's head. Jerry Miller misjudged the ball. He started to come in, then turned and headed for the fence. He reached over his head, but couldn't pull it in. The ball lodged under the fence and Larry had to stop at second.

Gaines went to third on a passed ball and came home standing up on another passed ball. New Castle threatened to score only once. After John Martin struck out to open the game, Alike Lee doubled off the Scoreboard and Underwood walked Watson on four straight pitches. Tom then fanned the next two batters he faced. Miller opened the seventh with a blooping single into rightfield.

Dumoulin lost the ball momentarily in the sun and couldn't get to it in time. The ball hit in front of him and bounced off his leg. But Gaines scooped it up and threw Miller out at second. Summer doesn't arrive until the temperatures reach the mid-90s.

So it's appropriate that the country's hottest miler, Marty Liquori, should be on hand Saturday for the inaugural El Paso Invitational track meet. Liquori is fresh from his stirring head-to-head victory over Jim Ryun in last Sunday's a i Luther King games. Ryun has indicated he won't be on hand here for a repeat confrontation with Liquori, but meet officials were still trying today to change his mind. Even without Ryun, Liquori could World Chess Championship Adjourns after 45th Move VANCOUVER, B.C. (AP) The second game of the world chess championship quarterfinal match between grand- masters Bobby Fischer of the United States and Mark Taimanov of the Soviet Union was adjourned Tuesday night on the 45th move.

Fischer, playing white, was a pawn ahead and in a position where he normally would force a win. The game was to be continued Wednesday. Fischer leads the 10-game match, l-O. The winner will advance in the challengers' round, with the survivor to meet world champion Boris Spassky of the Soviet Union for the title in 1972. -BUY U.S.

BONDS- find El Paso's altitude and a field of three sub-four-minute milers a tough combination to handle. Only one man has ever run a sub- four-minute mile in Texas. That was Preston Smith, who clocked a 3:59.8 a few years back. Even Ryun in his prime was only able to run a 4:04.1 mile in a similar altitude at Albuquerque, N.M. But University of Texas-El Paso track Coach Wayne Vandenburg said Tuesday he thinks Liquori has a "good chance" of dipping under the four-minute mark.

The mile field includes John Lawson of the Pacific Coast Track Club, who has a best of Chris Mason, Liq- uori's teammate at Villanova University, who has run a Leonard Hilton of Houston University, a 3:59.3 miler; and the University of New Mexico's Dave Roberts, who clocked a 4:02.5 in Albuquerque this spring. The mile overshadows what could be the finest javelin field assembled since the 1968 Mexico City Olympics.
