Ta Incl I -Carlana. evening, Alfred de Liagre Jr, adaption of "The Madwoman of Her basement has a magical opening in the floor, in which there are stairs. The stairs don't go anywhere; they just go down and they keep on going down. All she has to do is invite her profit- hungry victims, who are looking for oil, to take the stairs and that that. A Trio of Witches.

Giraudoux made "The Madwoman of Chaillot" a quite fascinating mixture of Shaw, another com mentator on human foibles, and Carroll, the man who thought up Wonderland for Alice. His play looks cynically and humorously upon the many failings people have acquired, and it has some wonder fully batty scenes. For instance. Estelle Winwood is Just as crazy as Miss Hunt is, but in a different way. Miss Winwood is an old horror who comes visiting with a dead dog that isn there.

Miss Hunt and another friend, Nydia Westman (who always comes with a crowd of friends who aren't there either), politely humor Miss Winwood and pretend to like her dog because this makes her happy But Estelle is smarter than they think. Sometimes she pretends to bring the invisible dog but doesn't, and her friends make fools of themselves petting it when it isn't there at all. Mr. de Liagre has kept the performances as succinct as possible, I guess. In a large company of rogues and deserving people John Carradine, Vladimir SokolofF, Clarence Derwent, James Westerfield and Doris Rich are outstanding.

And Mesdames Hunt, Winwood and Westman are completely funny. "The Madwoman of Chaillot" will be more interesting to talk about than anything else this season. AMUSEMENTS Friday, Dec. 31, 9: IS P.M. fa I A.M.

They spend hours gabbling at their quaint sidewalk cafes. They are almost as fond of listening as they are of Eatelle Winwood Hilar ioaa old httrrpr. talking, and when they go to a play they are willing1 to give a dramatist all the time he needs to say what he wants to say.

Bearing this in mind, one should allow the late Giraudoux more leeway than V-ould be given a standard brand Of Broadway author. Simple Solution. "The Madwoman of ChailloC nothing less than a simple rearrangement of human affairs, by a picturesque form of murder, so that everybody can be happy one again. Money is universally recognized as the root of all evil, so all Giraudoux had to do was to arrange for Miss Hunt to liquidate people who sell things, buy things and steal things. When all those who are motivated by an urge for profit are eliminated it is an easy matter for those who are left ragpickers, fleaf mutes, daffy women, waitresses, peddlers and cops to be happy.

Miss Hunt, the madwoman of the Chaillot district in Paris, is just the one to fix things up. Her form of insanity is that she likes people. She looks like and is a relic of a couple of generations ago, with her wigs, lorgnettes, feather boas and other fabulously rnessy. finery. She is countess find she inhabits the stone-walled basement at 21 Rue de Chaillot.

She does take a nap in a bed there a dream sequence of the play, but I suspect that when she really wants to sleep she retires Upside down on the ceiling. OPERA METROPOLITAN OPERA TONIGHT WALKUERE. Tburt. 0:30: ELI8IR S'AMORE. Frl.
