In fact, the text is entirely French-English bilingual. As their collection grew, they realized they might have a book. Ancelet contracted the University of Texas Press. "We're really excited about "The Makers of Cajun Music," says Suzanne Comer, humanities editor for the UT of the books we did years ago which continues to be a best seller is 'Country Music U.S.A." The UT Press printed 1,500 hard cover and 8,000 paperback copies, and the University of Quebec Press will distribute an additional 2,500 copies throughout the French-speaking world. Of the more than 60 books published annually by University of Texas, eight to 10 are for a national, non-academic readership.

Makers of Cajun Music" is one of those, according to David Cohen, marketing director. The international recognition that will soon crystallize around the book is another indication that Cajun culture is making milestones, not gravestones. "People have been predicting the death of Cajun culture for decades," Ancelet says. "But Marc Savoy in Eunice is making 80 accordions a year, and he has a waiting list for them. We've discovered 34 active accordion makers in Acadiana, and 12 violin makers-that's an indication of how alive the culture is.

"I think the book does carry a message that's larger than just this culture. I think we're showing an example of cultural survival in the United States-how a people can preserve an identity." Lafayette, years ago, the first Tribute to Cajun Music festival demonstrated the vitality and popularity of French music in south Louisiana. Now a new book, "The Makers of Cajun Music," will convey the lyrics and lifestyles of Cajun musicians to an international audience. The book is produced by Barry Ancelet and Elemore Morgan, both of the University of Southwestern Louisiana, and is published by the University of Texas Pess. More than 20 musicians, including Dennis McGee, Nathan Abshire, Clifton Chenier, Bos-Sec Ardoin and Zachary Richard, are depicted in color photographs and in their own words, with linking text by Ancelet.

Accordionist Nathan Abshire of Basile says, "When I die, I wish they would break all my records and not play them any more. It doesn't feel right for the radios and everyone to keep on playing a musician's music after he's gone." Both claim that the musicians themselves are the third "author" of the book. Indeed, the bulk of the text is the musicans' own comments on their music and their lives. "What struck me throughout the project was the natural eloquence of those we interviewed," Ancelet says. "All come from an oral tradition, from a society that puts importance on the spoken word.

They're all good talkers and express themselves magnificently." All but two of the interviews were done in Cajun French, and appear in the book as they were told, with an accompanying FOR SALE: 1975-19' Dodge 360 Mini Motor Home, Low Mileage-Very Clean Asking $8,500.
