Friday, Jan. 28, 1977 16 Slar-Tribune, Casper, Wyo. Kroner rebuffed Lions bid for Knox exchange for at least two Detroit players. UPI has learned that is largely what Is holding up the deal Rosenbloom Is demanding compensation from Detroit for Knox, who has four years remaining on his contract to coach the Rams. Owner William Clay Ford of the Lions feels the compensation is too much, while another factor may be the bad blood between the two National Football League franchises.

Ford still bolls because of the meager compensation (a No. 1 draft choice) he feels he got from the Rams when they signed wide receiver Ron Jessie. He let his feelings toward the Rams and Rosenbloom be put In print. Knox, who reportedly let his availability be known to Ford when Los Angeles closed out the regular season In Pontlac, may be given total control over Lion personnel to his movement will be more than lateral and Detroit can avoid a tampering charge from Los Angeles. Lion players under discussion for possible transfer to the Rams Include quarterback Greg Landry, defensive tackle Herb Orvls and tight end Charlie Sanders.

Jaworskl is unsigned and would become a free agent May 1 while Landry has fallen from Ford's favor In recent seasons. Landry wound up second In the conference passing statistics this year after not even opening the season as Detroit's No. 1 quarterback. "This might be the largest amount ever offered an athlete over a season," Zlngale said, adding that Borg would be paid approximately for his services.

"I expect to have an answer from Borg today." org, the Nets' No. 1 draft pick four years ago when he was Just 16-yeaBorg, the Nets' No. 1 draft pick four years ago when he was just 16-years-old, has resisted going into team tennis. Should Borg agree to Join the Nets, he would be teamed with 20-year-old Czech defector Martina Navratllova giving Cleveland one of the strongest WTT clubs. The contract offered by the Nets stipulates Borg would do nothing but play for Cleveland.

He would have to give up Lamar Hunt's World Championship Tennis circuit, "Every year we get this offer and every year we have turned it down," said Lennert Bergelln, Borg's coach and adviser. "The first offer was made three years ago, but it keeps getting bigger and bigger. It must be inflation." Selmer hired DENTON, Tex. (UPI) North Texas State University Thursday promoted assistant football coach Andy Everest to assistant athletic director and named former Miami University coach Carl Selmer to replace him as offensive line coach. The announcements were made by Hayden Fry, head football coach and athletic director, who said they were effective Feb.

1. Selmer was fired at Miami before the last game of last season after serving for two years. He previously was an assistant at Wyoming and Nebraska. Everest has been a coach for 27 years Including stints at California Santa Barbara, Utah, Stanford and Southern Methodist. PONTIAC, Mich.

(UPI) -Negotiations are underway that would bring Chuck Knox to the Detroit Lions from the Los Angeles Rams, where he Is head coach. Both sides have Issued denials but, perhaps significantly, the wording Is such that neither rules out the possibility of such an event happening In the near future. "So far as the Rams are concerned, Chuck Knox Is our head coach and will continue in that capacity," club owner Carroll Rosenbloom said. "I am In total agreement with Mr. Rosenbloom's statement," Knox said.

"Nothing Is being released from here," a spokesman for the Lions said. "It's all Bruno's story." The Oakland Press, In a copyrighted story by Sports Editor Bruno Kearns, said Knox would have the job by Friday and bring "The Polish Rifle," disgruntled quarterback Ron Jaworskl, with him In Agents feud over stars NEW YORK (UPI) The executive director of the Major League Players Association believes he has a new obligation to protect the players from the agents who negotiate their contracts. Citing a recent study by the Select House Committee on Professional Sports, Marvin Miller said that steps are being taken to establish a uniform code of ethics for player representatives. He said he had no evidence that "any agent acted Improperly" but added, "my prime concern Is for the potential dangers that exist." Miller's statement was immediately labeled "petty Jealousy" by Jerry Kapsteln, the agent who negotiated contracts for 10 players in the major leagues' first re-entry draft. "He's very Jealous of me," said Kapsteln.

"He's been Jealous of me since I started in this business. The best judge of me is my players. Ask them if they have any complaints. I don't think Marvin's comment is worth commenting on." "In an effort to be Innovative, Kapsteln offered a special covenant which would take away that player's freedom after his contract had expired," said Dick Moss, counsel for the Players Association. "In the contract, Kapsteln offered the right of first refusal to the club should his client get other offers after the contract expires.

"The basic agreement provides players with a chance to become free agents again after their contracts have expired," he said. "By giving a club first refusal, you're limiting that player In the choices he can make. No club Is going to make a bonafide offer for a player if their offer is allowed to be topped. And, Kapsteln wasn't able to get a 'no trade' clause in the contract so, if the player was traded, he would have been stuck with that team." BALTIMORE (UPI Donald Kroner, the man who crashed his single-engine plane Into Memorial Stadium last month, has lost a bid to regain his revoked pilot's license. Administrative law Judge William Fowler Jr.

stated, "There can be no condoning the flying behavior of this man," and then turned down Kroner's request to have the revocation lifted. Kroner's pilot's license was suspended Dec. 20, one day after bis plane crashed Into the upper deck of the stadium following a Colts-Steelers playoff game. The Federal Aviation Administration then revoked his license Jan. 5.

After presiding over a twoday appeals hearing, Fowler said Kroner was guilty of "willful and almost Incredible disregard of the safety of the public in the stadium and the stadium area. "There was an overwhelming array of evidence I can't recall a more public crash than the one of Dec. 19, Fowler said. Kroner claimed water In the plane's fuel tank caused the motor to sputter and finally stall. However, two FAA Investigators testified that they found no evidence to support that claim.

Kroner rented a plane and made several passes over the stadium during the football game. After landing the plane and renting another aircraft, he flew back to the stadium and crashed. There were no injuries to fans, most of whom had left a few minutes earlier when the game ended. Snowmobile snowout THIEF RIVER FALLS, Minn. Arena digest 81 MILLION SAW SUPER BOWL The Super Bowl XI game between Oakland and Minnesota attracted a record single-game television audience of 81,900,000 and a Nielsen rating of 44.4 percent, it was Wednesday by the National Broadcasting Company. The prior record was 75,930,000 people who watched Game 7 of the 1975 World Series between Cincinnati and Boston. It was estimated that Super Bowl XI attracted 73 per cent of the national television audience on Jan. 9. In the history of television only the film "Gone With the Wind" has ever drawn a bigger viewing audience than Super Bowl XI.

BRUIN RECOVERING UCLA basketball player Raymond Townsend, hospitalized after a game against theCalifornia Bears, is recovering at home from an undetermined ailment. He said Reutemann's major rival will be defending champion James Hunt of Great Britain, but "most of the time Carlos (Reutemann) drives better than Hunt. All were promoted to the major league roster for the first time this year.

Unsigned regulars, most of them seeking more money and multi-year contracts, Include Pete Rose, Joe Morgan, George Foster, Ken Griffey, Davey Concepclon, Gary Nolan, Jack Billingham and Rawly Eastwick. DAYTON HIRES CARTER University of Dayton Athletic Director Don Donoher an By CHUCK HARKINS Sports Editor LARAMIE Interest In the Wyoming-Arizona basketball game much be picking up. One guy has ordered a ticket on the 50-yard line. Matter of fact, it won't take a shoehorn to get Into Memorial Fleldhouse, but Wyoming coach Don DeVoe Is going to get his wish for the biggest crowd of the season as the Cowboys collide with Fred Snowden's WAC favorites. Wyoming's largest home crowd of the season was 3,103 against Texas Tech of the Southwest Conference.

It's smallest crowd of the season was 962 for the Adams State game. Overall the Cowboys have attracted 13,068 fans In their previous eight games In Laramie. Compare that, If you would, to the 16,158 fans who turned out for the BYU-Wyoming game In Provo. The Cougars attracted 3,090 more fans for one game than Wyoming did for eight games. 1 Times have changes, though, since those skimpy crowds walked unbumped into Memorial Fleldhouse.

It was a pabulum schedule, minus a WAC game, and DeVoe's gritty troops had not yet turned the fans on. Cowboy fans were treated to a little sustenance when Wyoming atoned for an earlier home loss to Denver by trimming the Pioneers on their home boards. It turned into a trencherman feast when the Cowboys stormed back from 14 points in arrears to drape a 10-point overtime defeat on CSU in Fort Collins. So the stage has been set as Wyoming challenges Arizona's nationally ranked Wildcats in the first home WAC game of the season for the Cowboys. At the outset of the season, Arizona was everybody's favorite to repeat as conference champions while Wyoming was everybody's favorite to finish in the WAC basement for the 6th straight year.

Expert are still not projecting Wyoming into the stratosphere that Arizona occupies, howevery, no longer are they being taken lightly. Fred Snowden Isn't even taking the Pokes lightly. He whisked his Wildcats Into Laramie on Thursday, promptly scheduling a workout in the arena that will become the oldest in the WAC, effective next Saturday when Texas-El Paso opens its new Taj Mahal in a televised game against the Cowboys. Arizona's Friday and Saturday invasion of Wyoming and CSU is a mighty important one for the Wildcats. They are tied with Utah for the league lead, pending the outcome of Utah's game last night against New Mexico.

But if the Wildcats can sweep the Cowboys and Rams they will be in the driver's seat. And a split would still leave the Cats in good shape since they already scored a win over New Mexico in Albuquerque. Carrlng a 3-1 WAC record, Arizona sustained Its loss to UTEP In the dying days of Memorial Gym, a cramped barn that has awed visitors for the better part of this century. It isn't regarded as a cardinal sin to lose to the Miners in El Paso. A year ago, Arizona recorded a WAC rarity when It swept Its Invasion of Wyoming and CSU.

That triggered the Wildcats title march which they eventually won by two games over run-nersup Utah and Texas-El Paso. Another sweep would likely do the same thing. Wyoming, however, has some momentum generated by the DU win and a WAC breakthrough over CSU in Fort Collins. Don DeVoe has been credited with working minor miracles with the Cowboys, although he refuses to take any credit. "I haven't shot a single basket," he says.

"It's Just a case of the players starting to believe in themselves." Still, DeVoe's magic did not go unobserved by courtside observers at Fort Collins. CSU coach Jim Williams had the Cowboys scouted six times before the matchup and not once had he seen the Pokes go to a zone defense. He saw a lot of it in the game that swung by an astronomical 24 points. And he saw something he hadn't anticipated when Doug Bessert spun in 28 points. He hadn't figured Rich Bozner would come off the bench and clamp the lid on the Alan Cunningham.

Williams, and everybody else, was stunned by the play of the Wyoming guardline when it started to execute the offense with some crisp passing and few turnovers. The Wyoming magic was worked against CSU, not Arizona. The Rams are improved over a team than went 6-8 in the conference a year ago. Arizona Is improved over a team that won the WAC championship with an 11-3 record. The Wildcats are nationally rated by both wire serves and NBC-TV's "Fabulous Fifteen" positions Arizona In ninth place In the country.

Wyoming will have to play letter perfect basketball to contain Herm (The Germ) Harris, who had back-to-back 35 point games last week against Utah and BYU. Harris is averaging 22.3 a game and he ranks as one of the best pure shooters In the country. Phil Taylor, 6-8 Junior center is second in scored with a 17.4 average, while the hub of the offense, 6-10 Bob Elliott, has averaged 16.9 a game and continual! ywhipped the ball to Harris when he's zeroed on the center of the iron. Player-for-player tonlght'r game shouldn't be a contest. Arizona is blessed with super athletes with incredible quickness.

"Fred Snowden sure knows how to recruit," says DeVoe. DeVoe believes bis club has a good shot at upsetting the Wildcats, providing the Cowboys concentrate on their own game while not worrying about Arizona's style. Wyoming will have to do it without the services of leading scorer Joe Fazekas who is sidelined with an Injury. DeVoe will start Garry Phillips and and Jettie Rice at guard, Delbert McDonald and Tony Barnett at forwards, and Doug Bessert at center. Bessert Is now tied for the No.

2 slot In shooting accuracy with a .625 marksmanship. Phillips is shooting at a .536 clip. Bessert leads the league in free throw shooting with a .909 mark on 10-for-U. Averaging seven boards a game, Bessert is tied for 10th in the WAC in that category. In team stats, Arizona has an edge over Wyoming in four of six divisions, trailing only in free throw shooting and scoring defense.

Arizona and Wyoming rank 1-2 In rebounding margin. But Cowboys have managed better distribution In their boards. Taylor and Elliott have combined for 22 caroms a game to account for most of the Wildcats caroms. Obviously, they'll come in for a lot of inside attention in tonight's game. Tlpoff Is slated for 7:35 p.m.

"I was pleased with the way Lechnir had been wrestling," said Dowler. "He's only a freshman and he beat a good wrestler by downing Pat Ariki of Colorado." Larry Deal, freshman grad from Casper Natrona, continues his steady Improvement in the face of some tough competlon. Dowler feels Deal has been one of the bright spots for the Cowboys this season! "Larry has wrestled against some of the best 190-pounders in the country this season," the coach said. "He has met some terrific competition and he Is getting better and better." Seven of Deal's losses have come against top competition, Including two losses to defending NCAA champion Eban Johnson of Minnesota, high school All American Larry Harris of Oregon State, western regional champion Bill Baldwin of Northern Colorado, and NCAA contender Steve Erickson of Colorado State. "He went 3-1-1 for us on the California trip and 1-1 down in Arizona," according to Dowler.
