Lawrence CheslgSr and Winston McConney waived jury trial and agreed to have their cases decided by U.S. District Court Judge Samuel Conti without a jury in exchange for the government dropping some of the Charges against them. Chesher will submit his case on the single charge of -manufacturing' methamphetamines and McConney will be judged on the charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm. Originally, 33 members of the Hell's Angels or their associates were charged with conspiracy to violate federal racketeering laws. Ten were never arrested and are now fugitives and the number has been reduced to 18 by dismissals and other legal maneuvers.

During Thursday's proceedings, Conti dismissed" 98 panel members for hardship after explaining the trial would last about four months and that there is a "remote possibility" the jurors could be sequestered, meaning they might be locked up away from their families; during Thanksgiving) and New Year. On Tuesday the judge will take the 114 remaining panel members into a different courtroom and question them until he has a group of 62. During this questioning, the press will be excluded but both defense and prosecution attorneys will be allowed to challenge for cause. The defendants are charged with being members of a DOONESBURY Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization, engaging in making and selling drugs, dealing in firearms and committing murder and attempted murder. The government must prove that such a conspiracy exists and that each defendant has comitted two overt crimes in furtherance of the conspiracy within a 10-year period.

Best known defendant is Ralph (Sonny) Barger, being held in jail in lieu of $1 million bail. Conti said he would furnish jurors with written biographies to keep track of the score of defendants when the trial actually starts. The defendants represent the Oakland, San Francisco. Marin County, San Jose, Los Angeles and Vallejo chapters of the Hell's Angels and are charged in a 25-count indictment of 45 pages which will be read to potential jurors by judge Conti. The individual defendants are charged with manufacture, distribution or sale of methamphetamine heroin or cocahie in Northern California and Oregon.

James E. (Jim Jim) Brandes, named as chief lieute- nant and enforcer for the organization, is charged with -furthering -the conspiracy by murdering-Baymond, Keefauver in June 1974 In Contra Costa County and Alvin Mary Prater in August 1974 in Alameda County. He also is charged with trying to murder San Jose Police Sgt. John Kracht Feb. 19, 1977 in San Jose and narcotics officer.

William Zerby in Solano County Jan. 30, 1978. Kenneth J. (K.O.) Owen also is charged with the attempted murder Of Zerby. by Garry Trudeau OPRESTAURAHT mfl Da Ml.
