AQUI '72, Vol. 3, Page In 1947 The Times had acquired the Santa Maria Vidette, the Guadalupe Gazette and the Santa Maria Courier and still later the Santa Maria Advertiser. The Santa Maria Times has had many owners and gone through many changes during the years before being purchased by Burl Hagadone in 1958. Named publisher in the same year Robert Magee made the biggest change of all on February 11, 1963 when the newspaper was changed from a letterpress newspaper with hot metal type to the offset method with what is known as cold type, utilizing a photographic process for reproduction. Today the Santa Maria Times is a local industry employing more than 50 persons full time, has more than 200 carrier boys delivering papers and contributes substantially to the local economy not only in payroll and expenditures locally but in service to the community. The paper is housed in a modern newspaper plant printed on a high speed Goss Urbanite press capable of printing 40 page newspapers at 30,000 copies an hour or about 15,000 an hour if printing papers with fullcolor photographs such as those in Aqui.
