(AP) The drums are back this summer, but predictions of a large influx of Rainbow Family members haven't materialized here yet.

Some merchants and others had feared a repeat of last summer's disturbances when members of the counterculture group stopped in town while traveling to or from their annual gathering. About 50 people staged a sit-in at the downtown mall and a march to protest alleged police harassment. So far this summer, concerns about noise, especially the Rainbows' trademark drumming, have been the biggest problem, police said. "Things are just real laid-back," said Boulder officer Rob Haukeness, one of a handful of bicycle-mounted peacekeepers who patrol the mall. Complaints from merchants are down, he said, and "I can count on one hand the number of (Rainbow) arrests this summer." One reason for the scarcity of Rainbow family members is their attitude toward Boulder, a member said.

"Boulder has a reputation for not being a cool spot to hang out," said Nederland resident 2 fi 4 It Reg 149.99 249.99 579.99 799.99 Sale 99.99 169.99 399.99 549.99 Twin, ea. pa Full, ea. pa Queen set King set Gorpe see the mmysof5m Goodchild of Rapid City, S.D. krd Charlie Uooacnua oi sania Barbara, her mother of; Sheridan; and three grandchildren. as expected and Rainbow Family member Rob Savoye.

Another reason is that Boulder is out of the way for members leaving Taos, N.M., where this year's Rainbow gathering ended July 7. It was more convenient for Rainbow members to travel to Boulder from western Wyoming, the site of last year's annual gathering, Savoye said. Still, Boulder merchants said they have noticed that the number of the Rainbows, described by some as modern-day hippies, has been growing slowly. The group's drumming became enough of a problem Saturday during an art fair on the mall that about a half-dozen complaints were lodged with police. "I think when you cannot hear over the sound of the drums, when you have to shout to communicate, it interferes with commerce," employee Elizabeth Scott said.

Haukeness said he's optimistic the relative harmony between the so-called Rainbows and the merchants will continue. "As long as everybody relaxes, everything's going tojbe fine," he said. it A' pc eUMANTKO Ot TOUSMONfYIACI -t it Jennifer Lee Garwood CASPER Services for Jennifer Lee Garwood, 47, will be conducted on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Memorial Chapel by the Rev.
