Wednesday, July 12, 1972, Santa Maria, Times-21 Fischer Gets Into A Tight Spot Wells Fargo Co. Reports Earnings Nation's Weather REYKJAVIK, Iceland (UPI) Caught in a hopelessly drawn game, temperamental American challenger Bobby Fischer took a chance to bring some life into his first world chess championship game. In that moment, soft-spoken and mild-mannered Boris Spassky proved why he is the world champion in the noblest of games. He immediateJLj0pounced on Fischer's bishop left trapped after capturing one of the Russian's pawns-and the game turned distinctly in Spassky's favor. Spassky asked for adjournment after 40 moves and 4 12 hours play.

When the two resume the garne the first in their $250,000, 24-game world match -Spassky has a bishop and three pawns against Fischer's five pawns. Most experts assembled here seemed to agree that Spassky has a chance to win, while Fischer should be happy if he salvages a draw. But nobody has come up with an explanation why the American chess genius went straight into what appeared to be a Russian trap. "He took a chance to win a chance," said Danish grandmaster Jens Eneveoldsen. "We will never know until Fischer tells us if he does," said another international grandmaster.

Fischer obviously was displeased with his game. After the adjournment he angrily demanded a meeting with the Icelandic organizers to complain against what he described as he noisy audience. Some 3,000 Icelanders and foreign chess enthusiasts had packed into the Lagardur Hall for the opening thriller. But most knowkdgable observers said they felt the audience was more quiet than is normal at top chess games. The Icelanders rejected Fischer's demand and told him it is up to the official referee.

Wells Fargo's assets topped the $8 biUiofrmark, reaching $8.2 billion compared to $6.9 billion a year ago. Deposits increased 12.1 per cent to $6.7 billion from $5.9 billion and loans rose 20.7 per cent to $4.7 billion compared to $3.9 billion on June 30, 1971. LOS ANGELES (UPI)-The nationwide weather summary: Sunshine was widespread in the far West and portions of the South today, with thunderstorms pouring heavy rain in the Midwest. A band of shower activity extended from Oklahoma to Minnesota and Wisconsin, with heavy thunderstorms, hail and high winds.

Marble-sized hail was reported near Rochester, Minn, and Sioux Falls, measured three inches of rain. There was nearly two inches of rain in parts of Washington, and summertime showers were reported in Eeastern New Mexico and in the extreme northern Rockies. Rain, cloudiness and fog spread along the eastern seaboard, and locally heavy rain hit portions of North Carolina. Early morning lows ranged from 85 at Phoenix to 43 at Glasgow, Mont. Highs Tuesday were 115 at Buckeye, and 113 at Blythe, Needles and Palm Springs in the Southern California desert.

Southern California had sunny and hot weather. Wells Fargo Company, parent firm of Wells Fargo Bank, NA, reported first half earnings (income before security transactions) of $17,601,706 equal to 1 .90 per share, up 13.1 per cent from $15,593,686 or $1.68 per share a year ago. Richard P. Cooley, president and chief executive officer, said that the 13 per cent gain in earnings resulted a heavy loan volume as well as modest bond trading profits in contrast to bond trading losses in the second quarter last year. Wells Fargo's income after security transactions for the six months ending June 30 was $17,861,027 equal to $1.93 per share, compared to $13,157,772 or $1.42 per share in the first half of 1971.
