As teams got down to the 53-I' man limit Sunday, many used the 1 most common method of the salary-cap era when in doubt, cut the guy with the higher salary. I Indianapolis, for example, re-' leased Craig Erickson, obtained last year in a trade to be their long-term quarterback. But he was beaten out early last season by Jim Harbaugh, who signed a four-year, $13 million deal this year, making Erickson's $2 million too much to carry. "We felt we could not keep Craig on our roster at the salary that was in his contract.

That's just the way this game is played now," said Bill Tobin, the Colts' director of football operations. "We researched the salaries of every quarterback in the National Football League and found out it was considerably higher than other backups." Only the Cincinnati Bengals, traditionally one of the league's lowest paying teams, deviated markedly. They kept Garrison Hearst and his $2.1 million salary after picking him up off waivers last week from Arizona. Hearst, slated to back up Ki-Jana Carter at running back, has so far refused to renegotiate his contract to take less. Hearst said he expects to stay in Cincinnati and would be surprised if he gets cut again or traded.

The Baltimore Ravens, among others, were set to try and sign him as a free agent for a lot less money when the Bengals jumped in and claimed him. Another cut by the Bengals Weekend Deals FOOTBALL Vicente 70970- 209 68873-209 Ray Ftoyd.i27.200 Jan from Casper asks: How do I get a flatter stomach? I've tried doing crunches every day, and even bought one of those stomach machines I saw on TV, but nothing seems to work. What can I do? Jan, you're right, doing crunches every day will do nothing to flatten your stomach. You have just experienced the myth of spot reduction. In other words, you can't target an area with exercise in hopes of reducing that area.

If this were true, then doing bicep curls would make your arms shrink, and everyone who chewed gum would have skinny faces. Crunches or curl-ups will help strengthen your abdominals, but they will not trim your waistline. Even though you can't target an area to lose body fat, if you reduce your overall percent of body fat you will re- duce the area that you are targeting. Body fat is simply stored calories, and in order to lose1 it you must burn off more calo-, ries than you consume. The best approach is a combina- ') tion of exercise and proper nutrition.

So if you want to reduce your waistline, count your calories, not your crunches. (AP) Curtis Enis can't hide anymore.

The sensational sophomore ran for 241 yards and scored three touchdowns Sunday as No. 11 Penn State cruised to a 24-7 victory over No. 7 Southern California in the Kickoff Classic. Enis, a 6-foot-1, 231-pounder who was rarely allowed to be interviewed last season, dazzled a Kickoff Classic-record crowd of 77,716 at Giants Stadium with scoring runs of 24, nine and four yards. His 24-yarder, with 1:57 left in the first half, displayed Enis' power and speed.

He ran directly into safety Rashard Cook at the 15-yard-line, bounced off and sped into the end zone to give the Nittany Lions a 10-0 lead. Penn State dominated so completely in the second half that coach John Robinson's team barely averted a shutout, scoring with 29 seconds left when linebacker Chris Claiborne recovered a fumble by tailback Chafie Fields in the end zone. After a scoreless third quarter, Enis, who coach Joe Paterno said still has to work on his game, ran 57 yards to the USC 27 to set up his 9-yard score with 13:22 left. Just 1:40 later, after Kim Herring intercepted a pass by Brad Otton, Enis was at it again, scoring from four yards out. Enis, who had 27 carries, produced the fourth-highest rushing total in Penn State history and the most by a sophomore.

Need any more explanations? Mike Shanahan says something after the game, but reporters are long gone back to Boston for a night of revelry. BRONCOS 27, VIKINGS 21: Actually, this is a computer-simulated score because the Broncos cannot get into Minneapolis because of the snow of the century. After the game, Continued from Bl After stumbling through an 8-8 season last year, they are 49-47 in this decade. They have won only one postseason game in the past four years. They have gone two straight seasons without making the playoffs, the first time that has happened in the Elway era.

The decline can be directly attributable to defense. Upgrading that defense, especially an anemic pass rush, was the Broncos' main goal in the off-season. They signed defensive end Alfred Williams and outside linebacker Bill Romanowski, then drafted linebacker John Mobley in the first round. Still, the focus of this team will be on offense and specifically on Elway. Elway, 36, signed a five-year, $29.5 million contract during the offseason, but probably will fulfill no more than three of those years.

Although no longer as nimble in the pocket, his arm is still a howitzer. Last year, he threw for 3,970 yards and a career-high 26 touchdowns compared to 14 interceptions. With Shanahan's offensive scheme now second-nature to him, Elway believes the Broncos can be even more intimidating on offense in 1996. The offensive line, led by Pro Bowl left tackle Gary Zimmerman and future Pro Bowl center Tom Nalen, is aging but still solid. Big play receiver Anthony Miller, who had 1,079 yards receiving and set a club record with 14 TD passes last year, is joined by Ed McCaffrey, Mike Sherrard and the always-productive Sharpe.

Healthier than he has been in years, Sharpe still has averaged 71 catches over the last four seasons. Terrell Davis was a rookie sensation at running back, gaining 1,117 yards despite a late-season hamstring injury. Davis, fullback Aaron Craver and rookie Detron Smith, whom Shanahan called "the best blocking back I've ever seen coming out of college," could give the Broncos the most authoritative ground game they've had since the prime of Bobby Humphrey. On defense, Mobley has made an immediate impact. During the third preseason game, NFL commentator John Madden called Mobley "the most dominating defensive rookie I've seen since Lawrence Taylor." Veteran Jumpy Geathers should provide strength in the interior of the defensive line, helping free Michael Dean Perry from constant double-teaming.

But the Broncos' improvement in the pass rush still is largely dependent on end Dan Williams fulfilling his potential, if only he can stay healthy. The team's No. 1 draft choice in 1993 has endured seven knee operations in three seasons. Romanowski will provide a steadying influence at linebacker and will free Allen Aldridge to move to his more natural position of middle linebacker. The secondary, including Pro Bowl safety Steve Atwater, returns intact.

Denver corner-backs didn't have a single interception in 1995, and rookies Darrius Johnson and Tory James could be factors before the year is out. Krr-- '96 GMC 12 TON EXT.
