Friday, Dec. 3, 1982 C1 0 Star-Tribune, Casper, Wyo. Friday television HILTON HaVIR'QUIEIE Director catches the real Gandhi By BOB THOMAS Associated Press Writer "GANDHI" is one of the few films in recent years that deserves to be called an epic. It is a magnificent panorama of the life and achievements of Mahatma Gandhi, who faced the British Empire in non-violer' combat and won independence for India. Jack Briley's script does not present Gandhi as a remote saint, but as an intensely human figure thrust into activism by his revulsion of how his fellow Indians were treated, first by South Africans, then by the British in India.

Director Richard Attenborough uses the screen to its fullest potential, capturing limitless crowds as well as focusing on the liny, humble man who set the momentous1 events in motion. Ben Kingsley in the title role-is the most inspired casting since Peter O'Toole in "Lawrence of Arabia" (which "Gandhi" resembles in scope and mysticism). Candice Bergen, John Gielgud, John Mills, Edward Fox, Trevor Howard and Martin Sheen offer sOpport, but some of the appearances seem gratuitous star names to bolster the box office. Particularly Sheen, who shows up over the years as an American journalist but never ages. If the film has a flaw, it is the portrayal of the British, who are almost entirely callous, stupid and brutai.

But that may be how the Indians saw them over the long, suppressive years of British Rated PG, perhaps because of violence in the battle scenes. With superb fit for South's suit and first- or second-round control of every sidesuit, North bid what he expected to make. West led his low diamond, and dummy's nine won the trick. It was obvious to all that one of the defenders held a singleton diamond, but even so, declarer expected no trouble with the hand until he led a trump to his king and East stuffed a diamond. Now it was obvious that it was West who held the singleton diamond.

Declarer panicked. He could not afford to lead a club to the king immediately lest West obtain a diamond ruff, so he decided he had to ruff spades. He cashed the ace of spades and ruffed a spade, came back to hand with the ten of trumps and ruffed his remaining spade. He overtook the queen of, jrumps and drew the remainder of the trumps. Next he cashed out his diamonds.

When he finally ted a club, East took the ace of. clubs and a spade for a one-trick set. Declarer was on the right track, but he should have taken a few moments to consider the hand.
