Instead, it turned the clock back briefly to the Roaring Twenties. It startled a lot of people. Missing only was the gray eminence of the Mob. It was obviously as honest as a spelling bee.

Every place you looked in the promotion was an amateur. It was also newspaper journalism's big chance. I hope we didn't muff it. It's not often the American public opens a paper anymore to find out who won and bow. The famous five "Ws" of our business have been pretty much reduced to the one for "Why?" TV pretty much takes care of the Who, What, When and Where.

On the big stories, anyway. It was promoter Jack Kent Cooke who first pointed this out. "You fellows have this one pretty much to yourselves," he noted. "No home TV in America, only 1,600,000 seats, a late-night event, too late for the 11 o'clock news, no film clips for the networks. It'll be like old times, the other 150 million people wanting to know what happened." It was.

You couldn't buy a paper in midtown Manhattan the next morning as early as 8 o'clock. People grabbed up the editions as fast as they fell off the trucks. They got their first look at Muhammad Ali crashing to the floor from a left hook in a paper. They read the, round-by-round, blow by blow and the other minutiae of the event carefully. The brief, inconclusive flashes of the night before, "Frazier Wins Decision," only sharpened the curiosity.

Still, the fight almost ended up with egg all over its box office, precisely because its show biz-oriented packagers reacted as if it were just another Andy Williams special or as if distribution was their main problem. First off, they left 600 radio-TV-newspaper types, cameramen, writers, technicians, foreign and domestic, sitting around New York hotels with nothing to do. In return for a promise from a hair tonic company to do "institutional" spots and a half-hour documentary, the promoters agreed to release the fighters from obligations to report to New York one week or 10 days before the fight. The "institutional" plugs really evolved into the hair oil plugging into the hottest entertainment of the year, and the Madison rumor had it that the only thing "institutional" about it was that the packagers, who had held out for big dough, eventually settled for token money. A Hollywood agent who wouldn't let Frank Sinatra appear on a voice-over commercial for that kind of money delivered the two hottest entertainment items of the year, doing trailers.

Small wonder the bouses around the country were 80 per cent dark the weekend before the fight. A headline in the New York Post two days before the bout read, "Nothing New on Ali-Frazier." Now, who is going to continue to read a story which confesses before it starts that it's old stuff? The plot for the promoters should have been to hire, say, a Harold Conrad, the demon press agent who took even such comparative stinkers as Clay-Patterson and Frazier-Ellis and turned them into hot tickets, Then they should have turned the fighters loose in Manhattan and had them rescue drowning babies in Central Par or stop Brifheni Vf 11 a IV fryer 11-11 IS 4 Cosic 10 10 12 7 Ktlly 45 II Miller I 41 1 Tollestrp 4 1-4 10 Bunker I 04 2 0 Serkaleht 0 04 0 0 Belley 0 00 0 0 Baker 0 04 0 0 Joresnen 0 04 0 Vain 0 04 0 1 01 Teteis 111-44 01 Epos Tebb Pevirsh Mldaaat Bcolonal UarmiM AS Miami (Ohio) 47 with eight seconds left for a 57-54 lead that Kansas was assured victory.
