Shaw long had prominently Identified with the woman suffrage movement and was president of the National American Woman Suffrage Association consecutively for eleven years. In 1916 she declined a renomlnatlon and was then elected honorary president Ijad spoken In every State In the union, before many State Legislatures and committees of both houses of Congress In the Interest of suffrage. She was a member the International Woman Suffrage Alliance, International Council of women, League to Enforce Peace and National Society for Broader Education. She continued her active participation in publlo affairs to the last Immediately preceding the great war, In the early summer of 1914, Dr. Shaw went to Rome as chairman of the Committee on Suffrage and Right of Citlien-ship at the quainquennlal session of the International Council of Women.

Immediately after hostilities had been terminated In France by the armistice. Dr. Shaw signed the resolution she helped draft for the National American Woman Suffrage Association, addressed to the peace conference, asking for punishment of the Germans for their crimes against women and girls. Dr. Shaw came from England to this country, an unknown pioneer girl of four vears, and through her own effort; vnt" ually became the president of tho National Woman's Suffrage Association.

In her girlhood she lived with her parentg immigrant family In a Michigan wilderness forty mlle-f rom- a post office- and one hundred miles from a railroad, starting her career as a school teacher, who walked eight miles a day and received wir Hr home was a poverty- stricken log cabin built by her father, sikn waa nnmnlled to leave his Wife and children at the mercy of Indians and wild animals while he earned a living for them. She suffered extreme poverty during this' period living an attic In Boston. On account of her sex she waa refused ordination in the New England conference 'ana oy jne General Conference the Metnodun Episcopal Church, but-In the same year had the honor of being the first woman ordained by the Methodist Protestant Church. In her struggles to become a minister she fought against ridicule, dissension and the barest necessi ties.
