A IIahrisbuko gentleman, who can i aggie tigurcs with the best of them, takes lis turn at the "twister. He says: "A prominent young member of the New York Bar stands to lose $100 on a wager. if his own solution of this problem is wrong. 'A column of troops twenty fire miles long is ordered to a point twenty nvo miles distant, a courier starts simul taneously with the rear of the column and reaches tho head thereof. Returning, he meets the rear of the column at the point where the head originally was.

Both troops and courier travel at a uniform rate of speed. How many miles does the courier travel The New York man said it was simple, that the courier journeyed even fifty The words 'uniform rate of speed' are understood to mean 'regular rate of If the courier traveled at uniform rate of speea wuu ine troops ne wouiu aimpiy maintain his position with the rear. The courier starts from the rear at the time the army begins to march. He rides forward 42.C77C7 miles and reaches the head of the column, which has marched 17 mltflfl whllot. woe rirlincr t.si tlio front.

To reach the head of the column the courier must travel twenty five miles (the length of the column) in addition to the number of miles which, the column marches whilst he is riding to the front. The column marches 17.67767 'miles whilst the ceurler rides 42.67767 miles. The ratio is 42.677C7 divided by 17.67767 equals 2.4142135, or the courier travels 2.4142135 mhes to each milt traveled by the army. The column was to move twenty five miles; it has now marched 17.67707 miles, consequently it has yet to march twenty five miles minus 17.67767, equals 7.32233 miles. The courier now starts on the return journey, and his rate of speed is 2.4142135 for each mile of the 7.32233 miles which the column has yet to march; 7.32233 multiplied by 2.4142135 equals 17.67767 miles which the courier ride back, which brings him to a point just twenty live miles from where he started, and he meets the rear of the column on the ground where the head of the column was when the march began.

The column has marched twenty five miles. The courier rode forward 42.67767 miles and returned 17.67767 miles. Total 60. 35534 miles. If the New York gentleman who claims the courier rode but fifty miles, and values his pinion at $100, will como this way, he can have his money covered and allowance made for his traveling expenses, and if he cannot understand this solution I will draw it in chalk for him." Tub Dem ocratic State Committee recognizes the fact that Harrisburg is the convention city of the State, and this year will again hold the State Convention here.

Occasionally the Democracy and the Prohibitionists wander away from Harrisburg and hold their convention in some other city, but they are glad to get back in the only city in the State that has all the accommodations, including the two most important railroad and hotel and they generally vow that they will never, never leave us again. It is, perhaps, a good thing for them to go away once in a decade, becanse they only learn then from experience tnat as places tor Holding conventions no other cities are in it with Harrisburg. The political parties ought to adopt a standing rule that all conventions he held in Harrisburg, and they would profit by It. They are welcome to Harrisburg. Wo know how to treat them.

Tub ground on Front street along the river bank from Briggs to Herr ought to make a very pretty park when it is put into good condition that is, providing councils pass toe ordinance creating tne Park Commission. We have too few parks In this city, and the proposed new one will be very welcome. For years that portion of the river baak has been used as a dumping ground, and at present it is covered with unsightly mounds of broken stone and huge boulders for street crossings. All this will have to go, and when the park proper is completed it will command one of the most beautiful views along the Susqnehanna. A prominent Philadelphian once said to Gossip that it would pay Harrisburg to purchase outright certain ground in the city limits for park purposes.

In the present case the city owns the land it proposes to convert into a park, and there is no necessity to purchase land for that purpose anywhere in tho city limits.
