Seventh, that Miss Karl is marrying a priest can in no way be equated to desertion of one's country. Eighth, talk to 56 seniors who were graduated from VCH. That loss of respect you mentioned is already there. Ninth, "the common good takes precedence over the individual good." At last we agree, that 56 seniors wanted their valedictorian with them should have been taken into consideration. Tenth, see Matt had to allocate another $96,000, will go to hiring teachers, in order that Maurice and Gueydan High Schools can reach the pupil-teacher ratios of non-Title I schools in the parish.

The board must attain equal pupil-teacher ratios in order to receive some $384,000 in federal Title I funds. WOMEN'S LIB -Our Out of the Past column appearing on this page will from now on be rotated amongourbackshopgirls. Cheryl Decuire, Janice Broussard, Phyllis Broussard and Patricia Roy will do the column. They're all hard workers, and this will give them a chance to do something for which they will receive credit. Come to think of it, this page is not a fair break for women's lib at all.

There is only one male writer included. FRESH PEELED mAOrlSE! 0 TANS LB. (Meridional Photo) has not changed only we have changed. When we became adults we decided that God's laws did not apply to us only to children and Catholic educators. Well, those laws apply to everyone now and forever. And you must blow on a very loud trumpet when you know those laws of God are being broken. God bless all the fine people in Abbeville.

Helen Broussard (Ed. note We are sure that Baptists, Episcopalians, Methodists, Presbyterians and all others in Abbeville are under the impression that they too, must live the words of Jesus.) Abbeville, La. June 1, 1973 Mr. Jim Leggett Editor, Meridional Abbeville, La. Dear Jim: Another school term has closed, but it was the first term during which the Abbeville High student newspaper enjoyed such professional publication.

We at AHS are proud of it, for it is an outstanding school newspaper. And as we toot our horns, I feel that the general public should know who makes up the entire publication orchestra. We are grateful to Bank of Abbeville and Trust First National Bank, Gulf Coast Bank, Bank of Erath, and Vermilion Saving sand Loan Association for underwriting contract publication costs for the AHS CAT CLAW. These people truly indicate their interest in the education of young people. We are also grateful to the Abbeville Meridional for allowin their facilities for such a professional printing of the student newspaper.

Yes, the Meridional prints it for a contract price, but staff members there show an interest that is considered by us at AHS beyond the contract price. AHS students prepare the copy and suggest makeup, but the Meridional staff, using their talents, really polishes it up for us. Thanks to you for your editorial suggestions, to Jennings Broussard for the half-toning and paste-up talents he always gives with a smile, to your typesetters who have corrected so many of our errors resulting from deadline rush, to Godfrey Bergeron for so willingly putting in that extra time to run the press, and to all of the Meridional personnel for accepting us and our endeavor HASKEfT LETTERS one of his patients, who appeared to be a patient of the hospital as well as one of Dr. Alleman's, went into the examining room we had occupied previously. At approximately 7:25 a.m., the phone at the nurses station in the emergency room rang and again only one side of the conversation was heard as follows: Nurse, "yes, they are." Pause.

Nurse, "Phisohex and gauze." Pause. Nurse, "Yes, doctor." We asked the nurse if it was Dr. Devalcourt that had called and she said, "Yes itwas.he'son his way." At about the same moment Dr. Allernan was coming out of the examining room and we asked the nurse to ask him if he could see our son because we were very concerned about him and had lost all hope that the doctor on call would actually make it to the hospital. Assumedly she asked him because she reported to us that he had said he couldn't give treatment to him because he was not on call.

Not being satisfied with that we personally asked him as follows: "Dr. Allernan, would you please see our son, he's been hurt?" He replied, "I can't because he is the patient of the doctor on call." We told him that the doctor on call was not our family doctor and that we had been waiting for him since 6: 15, an hour and ten minutes. Again he refused It was after this, at approximately 7:30 a.m., that we left Abbeville General Hospital and proceeded to go to Lafayette General Hospital. It is needless to say that we were very upset and concerned about our son, who by that time had lost a lot of blood from his injury and had gone through a traumatic experience. Upon arriving at the hospital in plants have over $70 million invested, and the distribution industry has over $5 million invested.

The dairy industry generates over $200 million in income each year. It is estimated that every dollar of income from the dairy industry turns over seven times in Louisiana and this turn-over provides jobs and supports our economy. This industry is also a big consumer, utilizing a tremendous amount of gasoline, trucks, tires and so on. Many of you work for the petroleum industry here in Louisiana and this has an effect on your job. This industry buys lot of feed and fertilizier and there are a lot of people employed in these businesses.

It also uses a lot of equipment, building materials, chemicals and paper. And remember, Louisiana is one of the biggest paper and chemical producing states in the nation. Yes, the dairy industry is a good citizen in Louisiana and provides a service that all Louisiana needs. This is the reason we need to keep a healthy dairy industry in our state. LB.

For all honors that the Cat Claw may win in competition, the Meridional staff is in the foreground in the recognition of the recipients. Thank you, all, very sincerely. s) Joe Choate Joe Choate Publications Sponsor Abbeville High School understanding of the problem. For instance, if you buy 100 pounds of beef at 75 cents a pound, added a processing charge of $10. All the meat sold is advertised as "sold hanging weight subject to trim loss" In trimming the meat, there could be a 37 percent loss of bone and fat.

So already your 75 cents a pound beef is costing you $1 .35 per pound to which financing charges of 20 percent or more may be added. That may be a good price if all your meat were sirloin steak but a good bit of it is going to be hamburger and that's pretty high even at today's prices. When an ad catches your eye that indicates you can get meat for less, it's always a good idea to check with the Better Business Bureau or Chamber of Commerce in your area to see if other consumers have registered complaints, as many of these type of stores stay in business in the community only long enough to make their profit and then they move on to another location. By and large those stores that have been in business in one community for many years could stary in business if they are giving the consumer their money's worth. During the past few, months, several "bargain" meat concerns have been closed because of the action taken by the Weights and Measures Division following consumer complaints.

This effort is of great help to other potential consumers in the community, but of no help to those who rushed in with the idea of getting meat at a reduced price. This effort is of great help to other potential consumers in the community, but of no help to those who rushed in with the idea of getting meat at a reduced price. We want you to enjoy good Louisiana beef during beef month, but we also want you to get your money's worth. So be a careful shopper on buying bulk meat because sometimes it is all now what it appea rs to be. If you see the public being defrauded on short weight, get in touch with the Consumer Affairs Department here at the Louisiana Department of Agriculture.

June is dairy month in Louisiana and each year during this particular month we spend a lot of time promoting dairy products because "everybody needs milk." This June we are going to spend more time getting you better acquainted with thedairy industry in Louisiana. We are doing this because so much publicity has been given the dairy industry which is slanted with half-truths. The dairy industry occupies a very important place in the agriculture economy of our state and ranks sixth as a source of income and second in total retail valueof sales. Here in Louisiana it employs more than 35,000 families. Six thousand families are directly involved in production, approximately 4200 families work in processing and distribution, and 24,800 families are in service related industries.

Thirty-five thousand jobs make dairying very important to Louisiana's economy. Dairying is a business that Louisiana has invested a lot of money in to provide you the public a needed service. The investments today exceed S440 million dollars of which the farms has about S3G5 million invested. Louisiana's processing COMMENT stated their understanding. It was decided to avoid further confusion and scandal by not exposing Miss Karl or the Catholic Church to the comments and judgments that would inevitable have been made.

No judgment should be made against individuals as such, since none of us knows the intentions and motivations of their hearts. But judgments certainly can be made when the individual comes into conflict with the community. The common good takes precedence over the individual good. If this were not so, our whole legal and judicial system in the Western world would be unfair and unchristian. Indeed the opposite is true.

It is because of shoddy thinking about individual rights at the expense of the rights of the larger community that several of our Supreme Court decisions seem to lack common sense in so many clear offenses. It was the same type of shoddy thinking that led the Watergate conspirators to lie, cheat, and break the law because of their dedication to one man rather than to their party or their country. 2. The second important element in the Vermilion Catholic case that was overlooked by you is that a Catholic school has certain principles, allegiances, loyalties, and values that it cannot abandon without being unfaithful to its very purpose of existence. What would we think of West Point if it graduated publicly a student who deserted his countrbr even admitted planning to) and defied its laws, regardless of how good a student or athelete that individual was? The school would lose both respect and credibility.

Vermilion Catholic is a Church-sponsored, Church-subsidized school. It makes no bones about its allegiance to the Catholic Church and its teachings. How could it possibly respond to the Catholic community of Abbeville or of the diocese of Lafayette if it appeared to condone publicly a student who was a' source of scandal to the Church and who was planning to ignore the principles and teachings of that Church for which the school exists? The whole Christian ethic of love has been often twisted and confused. The fact that love has certain priorities needs to be reflected upon: and the good of the many must be sought beyond the good of the one. When people use Christian love to justify and accept any kind of action regardless of its consequences, they should also recall the words found in Matthew's gospel (Chapter 18) about fraternal correction and how to treat thoses who give scandal.

We i all regret deeply the embarrassment caused to many, especially to Miss Karl's parents, by this unfortunate incident. The source of embarrassment, however," was not the action taken by the Church or school. It was the prior admission of Miss Karl's intentions, that had become well known in the community. Let us hope that to avoid any further embarrassment the whole matter will be dropped now. s) Rev.

Paul Metrejean Rev. Paul Metrejean St. Mary Magdalen Church Abbeville, Louisiana (Ed. note Criticism is a two-way street. First, the very purpose of allocation of space on this page both to letters to the editor and for guest commentary is that anyone, specifically the "silent majority," is allowed to comment.

Second, a successful effort was made to determine the whole matter what her post-graduation intentions are. Third, "the confusion of so many Catholics in and around Abbeville" surely does not result in scandal, hurt and shame. Fourth, "shoddy thinking about individual rights at the expense of the rights of the larger community" by the Supreme Court does not seem a very Christian approach in the least. Fifth, it seems that principles of a Catholic school should be in line with general principles. Sixth, why is it that we reflect FARM FOLKS by Dave Pearce La.

We were advised to return home and watch for certain symptoms and signs of infection becauseofthe time lapse. In mid' afternoon on the same date, Stevie began to vomit. Being very alarmed and cautious, we called the doctor who had seen Stevie. He advised us to bring him back to the hospital.

We did and the doctor was waiting for us at the hospital when we arrived. The doctor checked him thoroughly and he was admitted to the hospital for further observation and a neurosurgeon was called for consultation. The Weights and Measures Section of the Louisiana Department of Agriculture has for years been on the alert for those meat speciality stores that promise much but deliver less. It is true you are buying the bulk meat at a seeming savings in price, but there are many other things thatgo into its preparation for delivery to you that raise the price of the edible meat you receive. For beef month we have prepared a film of the steps meat goes through before it reaches you so that you will have a better writing it to make people think about their own actions.
