T T. 12- Stetion I W«dnnd*y, Novmnbw 2, 1977 THE DAILY HERALD U.S. agencies investigate liquid diet-death link Robin Hood RESTAURANT AND LOUNGE WASHINGTON (UPD - Two federal agencies are Investigating reports of several dettlis among persons using predigested liquid protein to lose weight, it was disclosed Tuesday. '·We're not saying there have been or have not been deaths" linked to use of the product, said a spokesman for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which is working with the Center for Discos3 Control in Atlanta in an effort to ans.ver that question State health departments also may be asked to help in checking medical records and any available autopsy reports for a determination of any connection between the deaths and this popular method of dieting, the spokesman said, "We are working with the disease control center in investigate reports of several deaths associated with liquid protein diets," the FDA spokesman said, including one by a doctor who expressed belief the death of a relative resulted from the diet. IT WAS LEARNED that deaths, among those taking liquid protein may number 83 many as It. and the FDA said in some cases it has been informed duvctiy of suspected problems with the diet. The FDA in recent weeks has announced two recalls of liquid protein products because of defective bottling that could ha\c allowed bacterial growth. The agency also is questioning the long-term effectiveness of this type of diet. Of the overall investigation of liquid protein, the spokesman said: "This has a rather high priority at FDA right now. We are extremely concerned." In particular, the spokesman said, "We remain concerned about the use of these products without raedica Isu- pervision." SOME DOCTORS have said one potential danger from unsupervised use of liquid protein is a reduction of potassium levels in the body, which can cause an irregular heartbeat In addition, the FDA spokesman said, there is ro scientific proof that liquid protein has any weight-reduction advantage "over any other diet which involves the same amount of calories." The spokesman said research is continuing and probably will show that if liquid protein is effective it will be "primarily for the management of extremely obese people under strict medical supervision." Dr. Robert Linn, whoso book "the Last Chance Diet" was largely the source of the liquid protein fad, said, "I ha\e not myself in my practice experienced any deaths nor am I aware of any unrcportcd deaths in the program which occurred under careful medical supen ision." THE REPORTS of deaths which have occurred, he said, appear to have been among patients "who have been monitored minimally" by tlieu- doctors and appear to have been caused by a lack of micronutrients, especially potassium. "There is no implication of toxicity of liquid protein. The problem area seems to be the omission of other nutrients," he said. He added that there is still every evidence to indicate the liquid protein fast is the "only effective approach to dealing with the health hazards of obesity."
