Six THE READING NEWS TIMES, READING, WEDNESDAY MORNING, APRIL 28, 1915 FAYERSHAM IN I POWERFUL PLAY "The Hawk," From the French, Admirably Adapted Actor's Personality to William Faversham, an actor held in the highest esteem by Reading theatre goers, made his first appearance at the Academy last evening for even years, and that his popularity and the sterling qualities of his acting were enjoyed was fully demon strated by the ovation the star and his company received. "The Hawk," a drama of modern French life, is the play that William Faversham is presenting this season, written by Francis de Croisset. translated by Marie Zane Taylor and especially adapted for the American stage by Mr. Faversham. Briefly the story, like most French tales, has for Its theme the eternal "triangle." The Story Comte George de Dassetta.

An entertain ment is given at the home of the Duclos and Rene discovers that De Dassetta and Mariana are cheating at cards and winning a tremendous sum of money from Drakon, an American. Later, in a gripping scene, Rene accuses Mariana and de nounces her. She in return admits the double life she has been living and' begs Rene not to expose her. He agrees but on one condition, that she leave her husband and go with him The husband suddenly returns, is told that they have been caught, and he then realizes Mariana's love for Rene.

In the violent scene between the Count, the wife and her lover, Dasetta, disappears. The lst act ten month later, shows Dasetta a ruined man shabby and afflicted with the "dope' habit. Drakon has found him and in an effort to straighten matters out for Kene and Mariana ana everyone con cerned, thev try to Ket Dasetta's con sent to a divorce Drakon offering him a big position in Mexico. Dasetta de clines and tells Dakon he does not de serve such confidence, that he is cheat and like a hawk he swooped down on him and beat him at noKer. ini takes Rene's plans out of his hands, for he meant to expose Dasetta himself.

He agrees to consent to the divorce, provided Mariana aks him herself. They call in Mariana and this brings us to the big scene in the play, the tears and the pathos, a scene which actually moved everyone in the theatre, that William Faversham knows how to play. He yields nothing to his pride. Put his pitiable condition and ap pearance appeal to her sympathy. She agrees to return to her husband, and they take Drakon's offer, while Drakon tells Rene that he must meet the cir cumstances.

Wm. Faversham played Dasetta ad mirably. It is a role that gave him elegrant opportunities to display his sincere acting. Twenty years ago Faver sham was considered the best romantic actor in love scenes, and his delishtful bit at the telephone in the first act proves that today he has lost none of that beautiful way of saying things. In the scene with Mariana, where he real izes that she loves Rene, and at the very close of the second act, where he suddenly leaves the wife and the lover, Faversham was never better.

The last act recalled his work as Neville Letch mere in "Letty and aroused a tender chord in the hearts of every one in the audience. As De Dasetta William Fa. vershaw was all that could be desired.
