VERMILION WILL SEEK MEMBERS Members of the Vermilion Parish Cattlemen's Association at their annual meeting here Monday afternoon re-elected their officers for the new fiscal year and made plans for a membership drive to cover the nine wards of the parish.

The organization adopted a resolution supporting the calfhood vaccination together with a blood test to eliminate Bangs disease among the cattle of the parish. The resolution urged that the members of the association give the new method a fair trial under the supervision of and in cooperation with the Federal Bureau of Animal Industry and the State Livestock and Sanitary Board. The officers named to head the Vermilion Cattlemen's Association for the new fiscal year are R. Wat-kins Greene, Cow Island, president; A. J.

Marceaux, Kaplan, first vice-president; Leonce Broussard, Erath, second vice-president; J. F. Noel, Perry, third vice-president; and Alphe Broussard, Point Pleasant Ranch, fourth vice-president. The directors representing each ward of the parish include O. J.

Moss, first ward; Edmund Dugas, second ward; F. A. Godchaux, third ward; Dr. J. A.

Villien, fourth ward; Phillip LeBlanc, fifth ward; Russell Greene, sixth ward; Joseph Mouton, seventh ward Ted F. Riley, eighth ward; and Laurent Dartez, ninth ward. The membership campaign in the association will be conducted over a period of several months and when completed will be marked by two barbecues for the members which will be given by Frank A. Godchaux, and Charles Caldwell, announced President Greene. The organization donated $25 for the purchase of prizes which will be awarded at the 4-H Club Achievement Day prqgram in Abbeville March 29 when purebred cattle owned by the high school boys and girls will be exhibited.

County Farm Agent J. D. Sobert stated that approximate ly 900 mermbefrs of 4-H Clubs from 17 schools in the parish will take part in the achievement day program here. Delegates named to represent the cattlemen's association at the state convention in Shreveport Friday and Saturday of this week are President R. Watkins Greene, Alphe Broussard, and Theogene Brasseaux.

F. A. Godchaux, invited the group to attend a publis sale of purebred Aberdeen Angus cattle which will be held during the second week of April in Welsh. County Agent Sobert invited the cattlemen to join in the annual winter legume tour of Vermilion parish which will start Monday, February 24, at 1 o'clock p. from the court house here.

At the suggestion of Charles Caldwell, it was agreed by the members that the assistance of the Federal government will be sought in undertaking additional projects to supervise the testirjg of cattle for the elimination of Bangs disease. MEMBERSHIP DRIVE BEING CONDUCTED FOR FARM BUREAU A concerted drive for membership in the Farm Bureau in Vermilion parish started Monday, February 10, it was announced by County Agent J. D. Sobert. The quota for Vermilion parish has been set at 500 members. There are from 6000 to 7000 farmers in the parish.

The membership list will be published in next week's issue of the Meridional. WINTER LEGUME TOUR OF VERMILION WILL BE HELD MONDAY The fifth annual Vermilion parish winter legume tour will take place Monday, February 24, starting at 1 o'clock p. from the courthouse in Abbeville, it was announced by County Farm Agent J. D. Sobert.

Secretary-Treasurer R. J. LaBauve was authorized to appoint a lawyer to represent the police jury in the legal proceedings against the town to sctek the payment from the town which, it was estimated, will yield $4,000 a year baged on last year's.

Kibbe who attended the meeting of the police jury declared that' personally he was in favor of paying the four-mill tax the parish but that as mayor of thiy town he could not and would not impose the tax on the people unless the citizens requested an amendment to. their charter.

"We get more harm than good from the four-mill tax exemption granted to the town of Abbeville through its charter granted in 1854, continued Mayor Kibbe. "The town of Abbeville has been criticised by the other citizens of Vermilion parish for not paying the four-mill tax but it is not my fault and not the fault of the present council. Abbeville is contributing from $6000 to $8000 a year for maintaining organizations beneficial to the parish and although we get the benefit of th trading done here, many fail to real ize, tnat we are helping." Secretary-Treasurer LaBauve stated that the police jury will seek to enforce the collection of the four-mill tax from Abbeville and if this is not successful that the police jury will make application with the state legislature to amend the charter under which the town of Abbeville ia operating so that the town will pay its four-mill tax to help in the operations of the police jury. 'The police jury named members of a jury of freeholders to designate a road in the third ward. Named on the jury are Chairman Eddie Broussard, Ophelia Thibodeaux, Olivier Nunez, Adam Harrington, NicholaSr Breaux, Saul Richard, and J.

Avery Boudreaux. The body completed legal details for the establishing of the regional housing authority for the constructing of 125 low-rent dwelling units. Operating with Vermilion in the housing authority are the parishes of Iberia, Lafayette, St. Martin and St. Mary.

Miss Elizabeth Cammack, field worker for the Louisiana Library Commission, and Miss Jessica Boatner, librarian assigned to Vermilion parish, discussed before the members of the police jury their plans for operating the demonstration library in the parish which will be inaugurated in the next few weeks. P. A. project for the sewerage system for the town of Kaplan with an allotment of $123,157 for operation at the discretion of the state W. P. A.

ALLOT $16,659 FOR GUEYDAN IMPROVEMENTS Gueydan, La. President, F. D. Roosevelt has approved a town-wide project for the extension" of the water system here and has authorized an allotment of $16,659, it was announced here by United Statesi Senator Allen J. Ellender.

The project is now eligible for operation at the discretion of the state W. P. A. administrator. NOTICE TO PROPERTY TAXPAYERS The 1940 taxes are now due and payable since January 1, 1941.

ABBEVILLE HIGH CARNIVAL TO BE HELD TONIGHT Featuring a patriotic theme of red, white and blue, the fifth annual carnival ball sponsored by the Abbeville high school students Saturday, February 22, starting at 8 o'clock p. in the high school gymnasium, promises to be one of the outstanding events of the season. Miss Sara Kirkpatrick and Frankie DeGraauw will reign as queen and king of the senior court. Reigning over the junior court will be Miss Waldeen Hebert and Jimmie Voor-hof. The carnival court will march in the high school gymnasium at 8 o'clock p.

Helen Russo, a graduate of Abbeville High, will be honored with initiation into Alpha Lambda Delta, honorary scholastic fraternity for freshmen women. Of the 450 freshmen girls, twenty students have maintained the academic average requisite for initiation and Abbeville is represented in the honor group by Miss Russo, who was also an honor student through High School. She is the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Russo, Abbeville.

OIL ACTIVITIES IN THIS PARISH CLAIM INTEREST The Continental Oil according to reports published in the Times-Picayune, is completing its west extension test for the Abbeville field in Vermilion parish and may add a half mile or more on this side of the field if the test results in a producer. The outpost operation lies a half mile west and slightly south of the operator's No. 1 Duhon which heretofore has marked the most northwesterly productive point in the field. Total depth of the Motty well is below 10,500 feet and perforations for the test were show below 10,300 feet in what may prove -to be a new proudcing horizon here. The state minerals department announced the completion of the White Lake well as follows: White Lake, east field, Vermilion parish, Union Oil Company of Louisiana Furs 4-A, 10.60 barrels on 10-160-inch choke same company's Vermilion Parish School Board 1-B, 405 barrels on 12-64-inch choke.

ACCEPTS POSITION IN ST. MARTIN Assay J. LeBlanc of this city has accepted a position with the J. R. Watkins Company to distribute their products in St.

Martin parish with headquarters in St. Martinville. LeBlanc stated that he will start on his new position about February 24..
