Kansas U. Grants Allen Rest Leave Lawrence', Jan. 16 (IP). Dr. F.

G. (Phog) Allen, basketball coach at the University of Kansas, has been granted an indefinite vacation to regain his health, athletic director E. C. Quigley said today. "We're happy to give him a vacation," Quigley said.

"We want him to come back feeling as good as his old lloward Engleman, assistant coach, will have charge of the Jey-hawk team until Allen returns and members of the physical education department will absorb the coach's classes. next September. Hospital Reports The Babe is still doing well over at French Hospital. His doctors said last night that he had spent a comfortable day and that his condition seemed better. On top of Wednesday's encouraging reports, it appears that Ruth is really on the road back to good health after the serious neck operation he underwent Jan. 6.

Yanks to Pare HR Production (Continued from preceding page) ai year. Last season, the Yanks led both leagues with 136 four-base hits. Chances are pretty good that they 11 do it again but not at the sacrifice of ball games. Getting back to his first base problem, Harris admitted that Mickey Vernon of the Senators is the only man worth obtaining. "Clark Griffith says he won't trade Vernon," the manager explained.

"But we will wait and see. After he sees his team in Spring training he may find out that he needs a right-handed hitting third baseman such as Bill Johnson. But even if we don't get Vernon, I could keep Tommy Henrich at first and use Yogi Bera in the outfield." Bera is a left-handed hitting catcher from Newark and is built like Charley Keller. He has a lot of power and, according to Harris, can play the outfield. With Robinson and Sherman Lollar available for backstopping, an experiment to convert Yogi into an outfielder will likely be made in Spring training.

Graham 7 to 5 OverKessIer Billy Graham, flashy East Sider, was a 7-5 choice to outpoint Ruby Kessler, solid-socking Coney Islander, in the Garden's main 10-rounder tonight. Graham will be spotting Kessler about five pounds, 140 to 145. Billy has given weight away before, however," and it hasn't stopped him from piling up an impressive record of 67 victories in 69 pro fights. A former Golden Gloves puncher, Graham's only losses came at the hands of Tony Pellone. Kessler also is numbered among Pellone's victims.

Tony's triumphs over both these boys came on split decisions and many ring fans are still arguing over those official verdicts. Heavyweight champion Joe Louie has scheduled a six-round exhibition in Lima, Peru, Feb. 15, Billy McCarney announced yesterday. McCarney is handling Louis' tour, which gets started next month in Mexico City with a 10-round tussle against Arturo Godoy. The Peruvian promoter has deposited in a New York bank as a guarantee.

Louis also has the privilege of taking 50 of the gate. Tami Mauriello, Bronx heavy weight, will meet John Thomas a 10-rounded at Detroit's Olympia Stadium Friday, Jan. 24. Snturday Is Real Estate day for Home. Iota, builders' offers.

Montreal. Frank Boucher is hold- ing a special practice this morning and if Cal Gardner and Church Russell have failed to mend, the bossman will put in a hurried sum mons to the New Haven farm for a complete new line. The blonde Russell has been bothered all along with a bruise on his heel. The Blue Shirts kept right on bombing without him, but when the Rover Boy pivotman, Gardner, wound up with a charley horse to add to his injured hand, Boucher had to start laying plans pronto. HAS HUNCH THEY WON'T "I'll know in the morning whether they'll be able to make the trip," said Boucher last night.

"I have a hunch, though, they won't, so I have told Lynn Patrick in New Haven that I'll probably want that good line of his." The unit Frank was referring to is composed of Chick Webster, center; Sherman White, left wing and Jean Paul Cal Gardner Denis (pronounced Denee), right wing. Known as the Three-Province line, inasmuch as they hail from Ontario, Nova bcotia and Quebec, respectively, these three are the big reasons New Haven is making such a strong showing in the American Hockey League. Denis, former middleweight champ in the Canadian Army and mile titlist in Quebec, is the high-scorer and is particularly dangerous around the nets. "I'd rather give them an NHL fling as a unit," added Boucher, "but if either Gardner or Russell can make the Montreal trip I'll go along with a make-shift line, using DeMarco, Levandoski and Trudell." There was one piece of good news yesterday. Gardner's hand isn broken, although the worst was feared when he was sent over to see Dr.

Vincent Nardiello. TWIN VICTORIES WOULD HELP If the Rangers, who have won four out of the last live, can take Montreal up there Saturday and the Black Hawks here Sunday, their playoff chances really will be enhanced. This is the torrid part of the race with both Detroit and Chicago launching desperate bids for that fourth-place Cup spot. So fas the i lying Frenchmen have been soft touches for the Rangers, which have won four-of-seven with one tie. The records show, too, that two of the four wins have been accomplished in Montreal Forum, by counts of 4-1 and 3-2.

ICE WAGON One of the most underrated Rangers in current drive is big Joe Cooper, defense- "He's playing great hockey for us," claims Boucher who picked him up front Chicago via waivers at $5,000. day's Detroit game. It wasn't generally noted, but with Russell out of the line-up plus the injury to Gardner, Boucher's men beat the AVirigs in a torrid third period, using just two lines. Elmer Lach, goal-getting Frenchman, is back in Les Canadiens' line-up after missing 12 games due to a broken cheekbone. Rangers will play two exhibitions in Canada during six-day schedule break. 1st Cage Star Notes Changes New Bedford, Jan.

16 (U.R). The man who starred in the nation's first basketball game looked back over the sport's 55-year history today and decided that the biggest change was in scoring. "Goals were rare in those days, said William R. Chase. "It was nothing compared to the 60 or more points rung up by teams today.

In fact, the first game ended with a score of 1 to 0." Scored Lone Point. Chase, a 79-year-old insurance broker, is well qualified to talk about that game, having tallied the first and only goal at Springfield College, Dec. 12, 1891, in the first basketball contest ever staged. "I remember it distinctly," Chase said. "I scored the point from my position at left center.

I aimed the ball for the basket but it hit a of players and bounced back again. I tried again and this time my shot was perfect." The idea for basketball came from Dr. James Naismith, physical education instructor at the college, who wanted an indoor sport to provide exercise for the students. USED PEACH BASKETS According to Chase, Naismith had the janitor rig up two peach baskets and gathered the students together to explain the game which was to be played with soccer balls. "As soon as the game was explained to us," Chase said, "we practiced shooting baskets.

Every time the ball was thrown into the basket, someone would have to climb the ladder and recover the ball. Naturally that was quickly changed." The team in those days had nine men who lined up in three sections forwards, centers and guards. Each player was assigned a certain section to cover, with only the center allowed to, roye. it.
