Steady Sandra Palmer shot a three-under par 69 for the first-round lead of the Birmingham Classic Women's Golf Tournament and a two- stroke lead over Sandra Haynie and Louise Bruce. Miss' Palmer's consistent round was built on four birdies and a single bogey. Miss Palmer, Miss Haynie and Miss Bruce were the only players in the field of 83 to master par under ideal playing conditions. Five more players Sandra Post, Sharon Miller, Mary Homer, Clifford Ann Creed and Patty Bradley toured the Green Valley Country Club course in even par 72. Ten players were only one stroke further back.

The 69 Miss Palmer shot Friday equalled her best of the year. She had one at Miami and won the tournament. She hit 16 greens and a three-putt caused her only bogy of the day. Miss Haynie, who.was involved in the three-way playoff with JoAnn Prentice and Jane Blalock at the Colgate- Dinah Shore Winners Circle last shot a one-under- 71, despite ji triple-bogey eight at the par five 18th. Miller leads Tallahassee TALLAHASSEE, Fla.

"(AP) Allen Miller retained the lead Friday in the Tallahassee Open golf tournament with a- three-under-par 69 for a 38-hole total of 134, 10 under par, but said it would take two more similar founds to win the' $90,000 event. "I would like to shoot 17 under with another 68 and 69," said Miller. He holds a two-stroke lead in the Professional Golfer's Association event over Eddie Pearce, David Graham, Dan. Sikes and Bruce Devlin. The four are.

at 136. Three strokes behind at 137 were Tom Watson, Larry Hinson, and Ken Still and four off the pace were Bob Menne and Jim Dent. Keino debut Associated Preis EL PASO, Tex. -Six outdoor world record holders will compete here Saturday in the International Tradk Association's first outdoor stop in the United States in 1974. World record holder Jim Ryun is part of a mile field which also includes Kenyans Ben Jipcho and Kip Keino, Dave Wottle and hometown favorite Chris Fisher.

Possibly the best chance for a new record is in the pole vault because of the presence of outdoor world record holder Bob Seagren and indoor record holder Steve Smith and the light air of Kidd Field, 3,800 feet above sea level. Other outdoor record holder in the ITA event are 440- yard dashman John Smith, John Carlos and Jim Hines in the 100-yard dash, Bob Beamon in long 'jump and Rod Milburn in the 120- yard hurdles. The shot put also could be a highly competitive event with four 70-foot putters Randy Matson, Brian Oldfield, Karl Salb and Fred DeBarnardi competing. TERRELL BATTERY CO.
