Messenger-Press Thursday, September 17, 1981 Page 6 In The Groove By Steve Wosahla BACK TO SCHOOL SHOPPING GUIDE A sweeping England. "Glamour" reminds one of a less blown up version of Ian Hunter's "All American Allen here Davies has narrowed down his alienation to an inner battle between the outside world and his own self. But as a rock'n roll album, "Glamour" gets burdened down by its own questions and Davies, the great guitarist he is. forgets the one thing he preaches the most: to reveal himself. RATING: 'n Dry" (Mercury) Def Leppwd the next AC DCT Well yes and no.

This English hard rock outfit just barely into their twenties could conceivably be America's heavy decibel specialists to the coming years. If so, it will be without the obnoxious antics of Angus Young's Leppard watts the street where punk meets heavy metal but like UFO, they throw In a lot of melody to spare. In fact everything from the band's pretty boy looks to their album cover design by the Hipgnosis studio reminds one of UFO. Are they to meet the same fate as their elder British rockers who never went beyond journeyman statusT I'd rather think not. RATING: -ELO- 'Time" (JetEpic) "Twilight." the second track into "Time" indicates that ELO may never get away from Jeff Lynne's accessibly spacey pop pizazz that gave them a long running streak of hit singles in 1975-80.

But 'Time" is the first album of ELO songs I've been able to listen to since they virtually went dry after "Out of the Blue' On "Time," Lynne's sci-fi saga tells of the time when tickets to the moon are purchasable if vou can stand the "rocket lag." But all in all, the music is stripped down and less cluttered titan ELO has ever been. RATING: GGGGGGGg -Foreigner- "Foreigner 4" (Atlantic) Despite the brief breathers in "Urgent" and "Girl On the Moon," "Foreigner 4" is the group's most laborious and preponderous album yet. Instead of the light camp humor of "Women" and "Dirty White Boy," we get nearly five minutes of macho drudgery in rTm Gonna Win," melodramatic overkill in "Juke Box Hero" and disposable fluff everywhere else. Thank God then for "Urgent," a pulsating heater which sizzles with Jr. Walker'a blistering sax solo down the stretch, ff Lou Gramm would only learn to relax when he stags; it would be a lot easier With record price keeping pace with inflation, everyone has to be more selective bout their purchases.

The following list is a sampling of recent releases with comments about the artist and record and "The Grooves Guide." Records are scored between one and ten G's or Grooves. In addition, if a record rates an additional half-groove it is indicated by a Excellent records are indicated with 9-10 G's. A good disc can get anywhere from 6-8 G's. Mediocre to fair can score 4-6. The poor and pitiful deserve 1-3 G's.

This week The Grooves Guide" picks the records you'll want to play during school and those youll want to avoid. Those artists who are listed in the alphabet from N-Z will be rated next week. -The AH man Brothers Band- "Brothers of The Road" (Arista) Frankly this is the most pitiful All man Brothers album I've ever heard. Basically it boils down to the fact that Gregg Allman can't sing anymore and Dickey Betts never could. Gregg's gravel and sandpaper pitch is the Brothers' worst -blues.

(Just give "Straight From the Heart" a quick spin and you'll be shocked.) If Betts isn't stumbling through "The Judgement," he's trying to be Marty Balin in 'Two Rights." There's Just too many played out tales from the road and down and out burnouts here. What really makes the new album a self-parody of the once premiere American-band is reading the dedication on the back cover. "This album is titled in honor of all the musicians who have made southern rock a traditional art form in American music." Wasn't 'southern rock' the kind of labeling they were trying to get away from in the first placeT RATING: A -The Cramps- 'Psychedelic Jungle" (l.R.S.) If the Cramps (comprised of guitarists Congo Powers and Poison Ivy, drummer Nick Knox and singer Lux Interiors) didn't have such a sense of humor getting through "Psychedelic Jungle" might be a horror. Instead the Cramps' hysterical permutations of rockabilly and the Presley spirit in "Rock 'n Bones" becomes almost classic comedy. The simply played but haunting guitar riffs throughout the LP suggest what the late Sixties might have been liked if hippies weren't so groovy.

Lux Interiors has the dramatic power of the Brains' Tom Gray and an affected David Byrne of Talking The dense, deep spacious production would turn even a haunted house upside down. But everyone would dance in the process. RATING: GGGGGGGGG -Dave Davies- "Glamour" (RCA) Cm the cover of his second solo album, the second most famous kink seems to be poking as much fun at the Hollywood syndrom as he is stabbing the "new romance" movement craftsmen who delight in ettervescent melodies and all the right hooks. Sixteen years on, their music is no more hard hitting than a cup of tea late in the afternoon. The cosmic fluff of everything they've ever done weaves fts way onto "Long Distance Voy-ager" and has a fbrmulatic edge to it.

But one should never put the Moody Blues down for their timeless pop splendor. It's like good wine that ages. Look for a number one Moody Blues LP on the charts in 1991. RATING: "No Sleep Til Hammersmith" (Mercury) More than any other heavy metal album in recent memory, "No Sleep Til Hammersmith" basks in sheer intensity. But even a high decibel count isn't likely to translate to American ears without more substance.

Even on this live outing, Motorhead offers little room for anyone in the band to open up, let alone the audience who is barely heard in the background. Their not so subtle variations on your basic heavy metal thrashers will earn them little airplay in America. Each track is virtually indecipherable from the next and unless they tour here Incessantly, Motorhead will remain purely a British item. RATING: THE GROOVES CHARTt (The Grooves Chart indicates those records being most heavily played on my turntable. They can include albums, EP's and 45's.

The first column indicates this week's position, the second column indicates last week's.)
