Major G. A. While Held Position Under Heavy Enemy Fire WITH THE CANADIANS IN FRANCE, July 29. (Delayed) (CP) In a neat bit of team play that began six days before the British-Canadian drive south of July 25, French-speaking troops of a Quebce battalion paved the-way for the capture of Verrieres by Ontario troops by attacking and holding two hillside farms about 1.000 yards northwest of the town. The Quebecers teed oft from a Dolnt in the diD of a horseshoe ridge that slopes gently upwards the Beau voir and farms, 2,500 yards and to the town of Verrieres beyond on the left shoulder of an 80-foot, hill lust west of the Caen-Falais highway.

The rich farmland is almost barren of trees and the -close, lush fields are either plowed or carpeted thickly in golden srain. The Canadians, with their colonel in command, reached their first objectives in mid-afternoon without meeting heavy opposition and casualties, the colonel said, were "very light. A company commanded by -Major J. P. C.

Gauthier of Montreal was consolidating south of the Beauvoir farm with its walled-in farm houses of stone and adjoining orchard when the Germans loosed a terrific concentration of mortar and gunfire along the whole of this front Other men under Major J. A. Dextraze of Montreal had pushed on ahead but enemy fire pinned them. down on the south side of 'the crest of the ridge. The Canadians had to face the Germans without the help of antitank guns which could ''not be hroiiht intri nitinn anH nn Jnlv 21, after Mousseau's men' were overrun by eight enemy tanks and infantry which made five, counterattacks, the Canadians yielded Beauvoir-to the enemy but it was recaptured later by men led by Major G.

A. White' of Ottawa. The farm was held despite attacks by five tanks which remained dug in on the south side of the farm for 48 hours and in the face of heavy mortar and artillery- fire. The tanks were finally forced to withdraw due to the aggressiveness of White's ccmnanv. Lt.
