16 Radio Operator Hero as Sub Sinks U.S. Boat 5 O'Clock Edition Service. LEWES, Feb: 4. (BUP) The 3.598-ton' United Fruit Company freighter Sari Gil -was torpedoed and sunk last night by an enemy submarine off the Maryland killing two members of the crew, survivors disclosed on arriving here today, The attack' occurred at 11.50 "p.m. ES.T.'..' Four members of "the" 41-nian crew were Injured when the 323-foot vessel was struck by one torpedo on the port side.

4 The crew and one passenger immediately launched three lite boats, the survivors said. They no sooner had hit the-, water than the submarine began shelling the ship About 15 shells were fired, but only four-struck the before it sank. The San Git was the 16th vessel attacked by German U-boats since Ufey began their recent raid- ing in 'coastal waters, from Nova Scotia 'to Florida. Fifteen Of the ships-were sunk, and only, a tanker, the Malay, succeeded in reaching Dort. SThe San Gil survivors, who spent seven hours in the open lifeboat, were picked up by a coast' guard cutter, with the aid of several private craft from Ocean City, Md.

Captain Koch attributed the rescue of almost all the crew to the ship's radio operator, Robert S. Thorp, 41, East Orange, NJ. After the first torpedo struck the ship, Koch said, the radio operator climbed to the deck, quickly rigged op an emergency antenna and sent out appeals for help. The TtguUt antenna had been knocked down by the Impact of the. torpedo, which pene- trated to the engine room.
