The immediate result of the proposal would give city tax payers IS alderman three elected from each of five re defined wards. Net annual salary saving under the Greenberg plan would be $54,000. The mayor would be elected at large as in the present sys tem. Board of control would be replaced by an executive committee comprised of the mayor plus the aldermen obtaining the highest number of votes in each of the five new wards. These five senior aldermen would be paid S5.200 each for total cost of $26,000 a year, compared to the $38,000 now paid the four members of board of control.

"The housewife is being rooked to the tune of 30 cents a pound on retail beef, Newton Seby of Newcastle, a member of the Durham County Improvement Association, said Monday. "She has stopped buying beef and the chains have stopped advertising it because they want a consumer boycott to continue to drive down the price paid to producers." Mr.

Selby and William Allen of Newcastle said the association win hold a board meeting to hear representations from all counties on what action might i be taken about meat prices. PRICES SLIPPING Mr. Selby said increases in prices paid to producers last June were at first seen as a 'deserved boon to a sagging farm economy," bat he believes they were a carefully engi neered plan to create a public disturbance that would drive producer prices below what they would have been through normal increases. Producers were getting M.5 cents a pound for beef a year ago. Mr.

Selby said. This went to cents in June but has since dropped to 33.5 cents. The two- cent increase over the prices of last year is not enough to offset the effects of inflation. But while the price to produc ers now is two cents higher than last year, the price paid by the consumer is up by JO cents a pound, Mr. Allen said.

Mr. Selby said the two-cents- a-pound increase to producers could be passed on to the con sumer for no more than five cents. Canada'a gold mines employ about 10,000 The 10 aldermen excluded from the executive committee would each receive $3,500 a year for total salaries of $35,000. The city's present 22 aldermen each get $3,500, push ing annual aldermanic salaries to $77,000. The changes would not affect city representation on regional council, but the alderman says "time is of the essence if his proposal is to become effective before the December election.

The dean of council nor mally the alderman with most yean of council service would be deputy mayor. Alderman Greenberg's plan also demands citizens be given direct access to council. He believes ratepayers should be permitted to appear before council in delegations either at regular council meetings or at i special monthly meeting convened for delegations. The executive committee would meet once a week instead of the present two. A committee now studying methods of reducing council is scheduled to report its finding to city council next Monday night The Ottawa Journal Ottawa Gets Own Rochdale Developer of the project is a Toronto-based, t-run company, Coop College Residences Incorporated, which built Rochdale and a similar free institution at Waterloo University.
