By MICHAEL BENNETT ST. LOUIS (CP) The rookie with the most successful season in the National Hockey League was virtually ignored Sunday afternoon as television cameramen shot defenceman Serge Savard pouring Stanley Cup champagne over John Ferguson's head fat Montreal Canadians' dressing room. Claude Ruel had become only the first -year coach in the league's history to lead the team to divisional and playoff championships in his freshman year when the Canadlens beat St Louis Blues 2-1 to sweep the best-of-seven finals 4-0. In winning the championship cup, Ruel duplicated the record of the man be suc I -g. WESTWICK Quite a Weekend For Canada in Sport That was a pretty fair sports weekend, for Canada in international sports competition with.

Frank Mc-Mahon's Majestic Prince winning the Kentucky Derby at Louisville on Saturday and Canadiens grabbing their 16th Stanley Cup at St Louis yesterday. And even if both were favorites in their respective roles, there were tense moments at both sites though the Derby is a one-shot deal and it was just a matter of time until Canadiens put St Louis Blues on the shelf for another About the best St Louis fans could have hoped for was a one-game interruption of Montreal's successive-game victory march in the Stanley Cup finals. Still, Canadiens have made it a sweep in two of their three post-schedules series. ORGANIZATION' IS RIGHT Come to think of it it's quite an achievement for the Canadien organization and it's well to stress "organization" when you figure that Claude Ruel was a rookie coach following in the footsteps of the record-breaking Toe Blake. RueK become one of five you can think of who took over a team and in their first year at the belm wound up with the Stanley Cup.

Jimmy Skinner won a Cup the first year he took over as a coach with the Red Wings in the mid 50s. Toe Blake, of course, was not one to waste any time once he got the coaching job with Montreal. He won the first year he took over with Canadiens, and then practically never stopped. The lats Bill Stewart was coach with one of the most curious backgrounds to win bis rookie year. Stewart, who was a National League baseball umpire and a NHL, hockey referee, took the heba at Chicago in 1937-38 and promptly won the Stanley Cup.

So did Ottawa's Dave GUI. who waa earned coach of the Senators in 1926-27 when that chits won the, last Stanley Cup for the Capital. Still ctose to home. Art Ross made a deal with Senators to have Cy Demieny move and coach the Brums, and the latter won the Stanley Cup In 1928-29. For the first time In four games, the Blues broke Into the scoring first Apart from the fact the first period and the game provided the brightest hockey of the series, the Blues avoioed what they had felt was a disadvantage at Montreal when their series chances were jolted there by Canadiens taking the early scoring advantage.

LIGHTNING STRIKES Yesterday they did a little more of what Bowman describes as "bengals from the outset But the old lightning struck st the outset of the third period, and Canadiens were on their way. They weren't borne exactly free, and the agile Vachoa again came up with the kmd of net guarding that has characterized bit play ever since replacing injured "Gump" Worslry the Boston series. A penalty against Canadiens always Is a period of agony for an opposing coach. That power play can do a lot of damage. But in the case of St Louis, a penalty apiere worked to the advantage of Canadiens.

The Utter, when freed of some of the traffic jams provided by a full complement of players on each ede, can be expected to do some fancy skating and passing. The tying goal was scored for Canadiens while each team was short a man, and TrembUy, Duff and Harris came up with a couple of sharp relays behind the St Louis biueiine before Harris beat HalL It could have bran a much more interesting series had the Blues turned on a little earlier, which is something mat disappointed Scotty Bowmaa at Montreal and again in the third game at St Louis. There was nothing wrong with the Blues' effort yesterday which was ia direct contrast to their rather haphazard efforts at the Forum. As it turned out Canadiens needed to play only as hard as was required to win and this held true yesterday when Hall made some great stnps. There will be more of a demand new for a chanre the playoff realignment though defenders of this IT era will point to Canadiens' four-game rout of the Rangers and Leafs exit in their own division.

Clarence Campbell two years ago advocated semifinal sertes between East and West but it was voted down. There could be some re-assessment now. INTEREST FOR TRIMX CROWN Canadian oilman Frank McMabon paid J250.000 for Majestic Prince, and this colt definitely looks like a bargain. Under a brilliant and record-tying ride by Willie Hartack. Majestic Prince Wrought Canada to the sore once again in the Derby.

It was a tense battle the stretch, a fine effort for only the third victory for this country In the American classic It will arouse even greater Canadian interest now at Johnny Longden prepares the colt for a shot at the Triple Crown" that was won by Sir Barton for Canada's J. K. L. Ross in 1919. If they were looking for a test of courage.

Majestic Prince supplied convincing answer in the stretch as he moved to Saturday's win. And trainer Johnny Longden makes quite claim In rating the colt as good as Count Fleet Nobody would know better, since Longden rode that great thoroughbred. Haynie Wins BENTON. La. "Everything I have today, I had to fight for," said Ruel. as his players took turns drinking from hockey's most-coveted prize. "There were many who didn't want me and they said I could never handle this team. ByjL if you've got heart and want do a good Job you can do it" It was the second time in two years the Blues had fallen four straight to Montreal in the finals and Spo1 Ladies' Golf Sandra Post of Oakville, shot a final-round 74 for a total of -22S, worth $705. Kathy Whitworth was fourth at 217 and Marge Masters was fifth at 220. Canacliens Complete Sweep for day's loss brought their over-all record against the Canadiens to 0-16-2. However, the 16,126 fans at the arena saw the Blues regain their self respect after being humiliated 4-0 in the third game last Thursday. Terry Gray had given the Blues a 1-0 lead at 10.50 of the second period the first' time in the series St' Louis had been fat front But goals by defenceman Ted Harris and Ferguson in the space of two minutes and 20 seconds at the start of the third propelled the Canadiens' to their 16th cup in the club's 52-year history. The victory increased the Canadiens' total bonus money to $204,750 since they won the Eastern Division title March 29.

The Blues, who won the Western Division by 19 points, received S173.2&0 as runners-up after gaining berth in the final with eight-straight wins over Philadelphia Flyers and Los Angeles Kings. Ruel was mobbed by his" players at centre ice while NHL president Clarence Campbell made the presentation to Montreal captain Jean Beliveau. And Ruel smiled for one of the few times in the series as photographers took pictures. The cup Is a symbol of the 30-year-old coach's personal triumph. When Ruel was named last June' to succeed Blake, who coached the Canadiens to eight Stanley Cups in 13 years, everyone asked: -Who's her" "I had to get the players with me," said Ruel.
