Stock Market Shakes Loss; Moves Ahead NEW YORK (AP) The stock market shook off an early loss and moved ahead in active trading late this afternoon. Prices fell in early trading but by midday the loss had been wiped out as the trading picked up. The New York Stock Exchange halted trading briefly in Bethlehem Steel, Cerro and Rheem, which figured in merger developments. Bethlehem and Cerro announced they were discussing a merger that would involve $330 million in an exchange of stock. Bethlehem gained nearly a point and Cerro was up half a point.

Rheem fell 3 points on announcement that its merger talks with Bethlehem had been terminated and then shaved the loss to about half a point on announcement that a merger with Dillingham was under consideration. Eastern Air Lines gained more than 2 points and American added a point. Prices advanced on the American Stock Exchange. Grain CHICAGO (AP) All grain futures and soybeans prices declined on the Chicago Board of Trade Wednesday in active dealings. The termination of all September contracts at noon brought a heavy load of liquidation into the corn and soybean pits.

Within a few minutes, September corn fell nearly five cents a bushel to close at 1.12^-13%. The liquidation in September soybeans drove prices down from 2.79V4 to 2.73%, with the close of the contract at 2.75V4-76. Wheat futures also dipped, despite an authorization for 330,000 metric tons of wheat to India. Carlot grain receipts were estimated at: wheat 11 cars, corn 56, oats 1, rye 2, barley 1, soybeans none. At the close wheat was cent a bushel lower to Va higher, September 1.50-49%; corn was to cents a bushel lower, September 1.13 3 oats were to lower, September cents; rye was to lower, September 1.17V/2 and soybeans were to 2 1 lower, September 2.75 Markets At A Glance NEW YORK (AP) Stocks Higher; active trading.

Vinton W. Bacon, general superintendent of Metropolitan SanitaryDistrict of Greater Chicago, said the slicks are evident "all the way from the Central District Filtration plant to the Indiana Harbor ship canal." He said the canal "seems to be the source." Bacon examined the oil slicks from a helicopter Tuesday. He cautioned that if winds changed, beaches in the Chicago area could become as fouled as those in England after the Torrey Canyon broke up and spilled millions CHICAGO (AP) Wheat No 2 hard 1.56V 2 No 2 red 1.52V 2 n. 2.76% of gallons of oil into the sea.
