Brady jokingly posted a video on Facebook the following day of a cheetah, and Julian Edelman jokingly called him "Brady Vick" on Wednesday. "That's never really been something that I've been great at, is extending plays," Brady said earlier this season. "I see so many of these players whether it be Russell Wilson or Aaron Rodgers or Jay Cutler do it, Alex Smith, Ben Roethlisberger has done it for a lot of years some really mobile quarterbacks that do a great job for their team. If I can make some more of those plays, I think it'd really help our team.

I don't think instinctually it's there for me yet, but I'm going to keep working at it." Flacco, meanwhile, has done a great job of adapting to the Ravens' new offense under first-year coordinator Gary Kubiak, whose system demands a lot of mobility from the quarterback. It's the same system John Elway ran at the end of his career in Denver, and relies on a heavy use of play-action bootleg passes, with Flacco rolling out either way and throwing on the run. His 21-yard touchdown pass to tight end Crockett Gill-more last Saturday night against the Steelers was on a bootleg, as was a 15-yard pass he threw effortlessly to tight end Owen Daniels. "I love doing that stuff," Flacco said. "I think you need to move the pocket a lot to keep all these good rushers that you have in the NFL off balance a little bit.

When you're dropping back and you're giving those guys the same spot to go after every single time, it becomes pretty tough." Now, let's not go too crazy. The Ravens aren't ever going to run the Wildcat or read-option with Flacco. "I mean, come on. I'm 6-6, pretty big guy back there," Flacco said. But his scrambles have been effective.

Of Flacco's 39 scrambles this year, 17 have resulted in a first down, a career high. And he's a threat to buy time in the pocket and heave a pass 60 yards downfield. "Flacco is one of those guys who kind of has deceptive speed," Patriots linebacker Dont'a Hightower said. "A lot of people don't expect him to move the way he does a lot like Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees. Sometimes they're not looking to run, but they're able to make plays longer.

Flacco does a really good job of that. We're definitely going to have to contain him and make sure he's not able to roll out and throw up a shot downfield." Ben Volin can be reached at ben.volinglobe.com. Follow him on Twitter BenVolin ON FOOTBALL Continued from Page Dl ever expected. "He doesn't run much, but when he does, he has some pretty good speed where he can outrun most defensive linemen especially our defensive line," Vince Wilfork said of Flacco. "We have to do a real good job up front of just making sure we have him contained." Their mobility doesn't exactly show up in the stat sheet.

Brady rushed 36 times for 57 yards this year, while Flacco was slightly better, rushing 39 times for 70 yards. But there's a difference in being a running quarterback and a mobile quarterback, and this season, Brady and Flacco have shown impressive mobility for a couple of quarterbacks not labeled as great athletes. Longtime quarterback analyst Ron Jaworski likes to say that playing quarterback is similar to a boxer shuffling around a ring, with slide-stepping and quick footwork necessary to avoid pass rushers. Flacco has gotten so good at it that the Patriots' defenders this week are comparing him with Aaron Rodgers and Ben Roethlisberg-er, considered two of the best in the NFL at extending plays and throwing on the run. Last Saturday in Pittsburgh, Flacco ducked under one pass rusher, rolled to his left, and threw a 25-yard dart against his body to Torrey Smith for a touchdown.

"We know from experience that he's more mobile than he gets credit for," Patriots safety Devin McCourty said. "We know he can run, and if he has to, he can take off and get some yards. We talk about him in the same aspect you talk about, like, Roethlisberger, with staying alive in the pocket and still be able to throw the ball 50-60 yards deep." Brady, too, has done a better job of avoiding pass rushers and throwing on the run than ever before. It's not often you see a Hall of Fame-caliber quarterback improve a deficiency at age 37, but it's all part of his plan to treat his body right, continue working hard and play through his mid-40s. Brady used to take boxing lessons to help him with his footwork, and a picture of Brady throwing a jab currently hangs at Boston Boxing Fitness in Brighton.

Today, footwork and leg strengthening exercises have become a big part of Brady's training regimen, although he doesn't like to reveal too much about his drills. That 19-yard touchdown Brady threw to Danny Amendo-la against the Jets in October, while avoiding pass rushers and throwing against his body? That's not a play we've seen much out of Brady in his 15-year career. Penalties NE 120 113 BAL Penaltiesgame NE 7.5 BAL IIIH 7.1 Pro Bowl selections i i i Rob Gronkowski, TE Darrelle Revis, CB C.J.
