LOW-COST BANK LOANS July 23, 1954 RECORD, Vernon, Reds Score Another Victory at Geneva. A cease-fire agreement ending the fighting in Indo- china has been signed at Geneva. To describe it as anything other than a major victory for Communist Russia in the struggle for world dominion would be grossly inaccurate. To France it is a particularly humiliating result. To come to the end of the era of colonialism is not within itself reason for a sense of regret shame.

But to be kicked out of a country after nearly a century of rule is a tragic commentary on the decline of a great nation and what is worse, the failure to have any friends. But we could view the humiliation of France without regret if that were the major result of what has taken place. The French richly earned what has happened to them. The other results are much more serious. The blooded partition of Indochina and recognition by the Western nations, with the United States dissenting, of another act of conquest belongs with the past.

We are told that colonialism is dead. We are told that weak nations will no longer submit to the rule of the powerful nations. But what has happened in Indochina is, if possible, worse than colonialism. The territory of a supposedly free nation is partitioned without so much as permitting its authorized representatives the privilege of reading the terms of settlement. Naturally there is no effective measures open to the United States.

We fight a war in Southeast Asia alone. As a matter of fact we cannot force the people of Indochina or any other section of the world to choose the democratic way of life in preference to the spurious promises held out by the Communists. Freedom must be so real and so attractive that people will fight to secure it and fight to retain it. It cannot be forced in from the outside. That is the evidence of the failure of France.

The Reds were welcomed in Indochina because France offered nothing which seemed worth a struggle to retain. What the West has obtained at Geneva is an uneasy truce which will last only until Communist warlords in Moscow can set the stage for the next move in their campaign to dominate the world. The big question is how long this campaign of attrition can continue without reaching the place where free nations will have to choose between war and submission. Certainly there is no reason to believe that a crackup behind the iron curtain will take place as long as Red armies and Red diplomats continue to win victories at almost no cost to the real aggressors. i aro OF uixh to express our thanks and appreciation t.o mir friends for the lovely floral food and for kindness shown uw at the passing of our and brother.
