But Lester actually thought he was too strong against the Orioles last night. The lefthander, who picked up the lopsided 14-2 victory at Fenway Park, lasted five innings. He gave up one run and six hits, walked four and struck out five.

He received a great deal of offensive support as well as defensive help but wasn't overly pleased by his performance. "Coming into this year, I think the highest I ever did was 96," said Lester, who improved to 13-5. "That was a couple of years ago. It was one of those nights, I felt real strong, almost too strong. "I was getting out too early, trying to almost throw the ball past guys every time instead of just almost going half-speed and just relying on my stuff and throwing strikes.

It was unfortunate because I had good stuff. "To only go five and have some unneeded walks there and some long innings was tough." Lester retired the Orioles in order in the first inning. In the second, he gave up two hits, and in the third, he gave up one. The run he allowed came in the fourth. Aubrey Huff singled and Ramon Hernandez hit a ground-rule double to right, moving Huff to third.

Kevin Millar's sacrifice fly scored Huff. Oscar Sala-zar drew a walk, but Lester struck out Lou Montanez and Juan Castro to end the inning. In the fifth, Lester got two outs before Nick Markakis doubled through the hole at shortstop. Huff then walked the fourth walk for Lester, his highest total since April 29 against Toronto but Hernandez lined out to end the inning, and that Without a senior roster forward available, the Revolution were in a challenging situation before the match even started. Injuries kept Kenny Mansally (ankle sprain), Taylor Twellman (facial lacerations), Kheli Dube (adductor strain), and Adam Cristman (toe sprain) out of the lineup.

As a result, Khano Smith and Brandon Manzonelli started at forward. The offensive opportunities were limited for the Revolution, and what chances they had, they failed to put away. "Obviously, we didn't want to go out like that, and we didn't want to lose like that, but at the end of the day, I think it's a blessing in disguise," Smith said. The Revolution now can focus on the MLS standings, as this was their last in-season tournament. Last month, they won the Super-Liga and advanced to the semifinals of the US Open Cup.

"You never want to get beat at home," said Reis. "Unfortunately, that happened tonight. Now the important thing is to focus on the MLS Cup." That sentiment was echoed by Revolution coach Steve Nicol. "The last three months, we've played every four days with a roster of 18," Nicol said. "You're traveling, that's what you get, you get a team that's getting no juice.

"So we'll maybe manage a training session or two. in the next couple of weeks and get some strength back and get on with MLS." The Columbus Crew lead the Eastern Conference with 40 points, and the Revolution are 2 points behind. On Saturday, the Revolution travel to Ohio to play the Crew. In their first meeting May 24, the Revolution walked away with a 1-0 win. iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiniiiitiii Joe Public FC, 4-0 at GiHette Stadium 2-4 nc.wji,t ft a ft Scoring: Pitzpatrick Gregory Richardson (Wol-ry Wolfe) 17th minute: Richardson (unassisted) 45th minute; Roen Nelson (Richardson) 48th minute; Richardson (Silas Spann) 8ist Shots: New England 10, Joe Public 9.

Revolution are routed in tourney By Monique Walker GLOBE STAFF FOXBOROUGH Joe Public FC I forward Greg ory Richardson managed to do everything the Revolution couldn't last night. Richardson scored a hat trick and set up another goal to lead Joe Public to a 4-0 victory in the preliminary-round series of the CON-CACAF Champions League in front of 3,523 at Gillette Stadium. Joe Public won the series on aggregate goals (6-1) and advanced to Group play of the tournament. Joe Public became the first Caribbean club to knock out a US team in the history of CONCACAF club competition, and the first Caribbean team to score three goals against a US team.

They did it behind Richardson, a native of Guyana, who said the Columbus Crew were the only MLS club to express interest in his talents. That may change after his performance against the Revolution. Richardson was out for two months with a knee injury and was playing in just his third game back last night. He proved to be the offensive fuel for Joe Public. "I can't explain it," Richardson said.

"It's one of my best performances. It's the first time I ever play MLS team and plus the high stage. I just knew they couldn't handle it. My speed alone, I would have killed them." Joe Public wasted little time. In the 17th minute, Roen Nelson sent a pass from the halfway line to Richardson, who had a step on the Revolution's Gabriel Badilla andAmaechi Igwe.

Richardson managed to take the shot, despite a sliding Badilla to his Jeft and a charging Igwe on his right, for a 1-0 lead. Richardson had also kicked off the scoring six minutes into the second half in the first match (a 2-1 win for Joe Public last week). Richardson came back in the 45th minute last night, dodging Badilla along the right side, to chip in a goal over keeper Matt Reis's head to the top left corner for a 2-0 lead. In the opening minutes of the second half, Richardson sent a pass to Nelson, who dribbled in a goal off Reis's fingertips to the left side of the net, boosting Joe Public's lead to 3-0. He improved his career record against the Orioles to 6-0 with a 2.81 earned run average. "I feel good, which is fortunate," said Lester. "It's a long season with a lot of innings, and right now I feel pretty good and hopefully can just keep riding that wave." Manager Terry Francona noticed that Lester labored against righthanders.

"His location tonight was really not what it's been said Francona. "His ball was arm side, up and away to a lot of righthanders. You know, he's been so good down, and tonight there were balls he left up, especially with righthanders." The red-hot Dustin Pedroia had five RBIs, which gave Lester all the support he needed and then some. "He has been unreal," said Lester. "He's swinging the heck out of the bat right now.

It seems like every time you turn around, he's up to bat with guys on base and comes up clutch every time. He's done a great job for us defensively, offensively, leadership. Whatever Francona or the team asks of him, he does a good job of doing." As for himself, Lester said he had a talk with pitching coach John Farrell after his outing. "It's almost like I need to go half-speed," Lester said, "and not put as much effort into each throw and each pitch and just stay within myself a little more and realize I do feel strong, I do have pretty good stuff tonight, and just learn how to harness that and execute pitches instead of just going up there throwing and focus on executing that pitch." "We were patient, started making Liz throw the ball over the plate. He made some mistakes and we made him pay for it." Francona was particularly thrilled with Ortiz. "He had some very good swings," said the manager. "Took a good swing at a 3-and-0 fastball, little bit late, and he hit the ball off the left-field wall on the very next pitch. "But again, he came up in situations where the pitcher had to throw the ball right over the plate because there were so many men on base.

The guys ahead of him did a pretty good job." As did the guy behind him, Pedroia, who now has 75 RBIs second among AL second basemen to Seattle's Jose Lopez. The Sox had this one wrapped up by the fourth inning, when they held a 10-1 lead. By that time, Ortiz had all three of his hits, including two doubles, and had knocked in his four runs. Pedroia had already knocked in four with a sacrifice fly and a three-run homer. The Sox scored four in the third and six in the fourth, and the rest was pretty much a walk in the Fens. So much for the "progress" the Orioles have made this year.

So much for the "spoiler" team they could be in September. They look every bit the last-place team they are, having dropped a season-low 12 games below .500. In their last 54 games, the Orioles have allowed 10 or more runs 13 times. -i "You hope you can get it out of your system," said Trembley. "You've hit rock bottom and you would think that sooner or later, it's going to turn for you." With the Rays losing to the Yankees, the Sox are within four games of the division lead, and with six games left against Tampa Bay, they haven't given up on winning the AL East.

We're playing very well as a team right now and we're trying to defend our title," said Pedroia. "We'd love to win our division and we know we have a climb to do that, but I think everybody here is up for it. There's a whole month of September to go, and a lot can happen." Before the game, Francona went on about how proud he is of this team and how much fun he's had managing it because "we do things the right way." But they are not going to sign just anyone. "It has to be the right situation," Burns said. "We're certainly not feeling pressured into doing anything that we don't want to." Badilla answers call The Revolution will be without defender Gabriel Badilla for their next two matches. Badilla was called up to the Costa Rica national team for World Cup qualifying matches next week against Suriname and Haiti. He will miss the matches against Columbus Saturday and Chivas USA next Thursday.

Badilla, who was part of the Costa Rican team in the 2006 World Cup in Germany, has played two games with the Revolution since signing Aug. 18. He made his debut against the Galaxy, paired at center back with Michael Parkhurst in a 4-4-1-1 formation. The first game for the duo together came against one of the league's most dynamic scorers in forward Landon Donovan. Donovan scored two goals, the second time splitting Parkhurst and Badilla on his way to an open shot.

"It's always tough when your first game has to be against the best forward in the league," said Parkhurst. "I know we gave up two goals, and some of that was my fault. The other part of it is it's Landon Donovan, who is one of the best players in the league." Monique Walker can be reached at mwalkergbbe.com By Monique Walker GLOBE STAFF FOXBOROUGH The Revolution are in the market for a forward, but getting one may be easier said than done. They have until Sept. 15 to make roster moves, and Mike Burns, the Revolution's director of soccer, said finding the right player and one eligible and able to come to New England could be a challenge.

"I'm not going to mislead anyone," Burns said. "It's difficult at this time to find someone. We are trying. It's just very unusual that our four injured players are all forwards." The situation may be even more dire, as the Revolution are expected to announce that forward Adam Cristman is out for the season with a toe injury that has nagged him most of the year. None of the four forwards on the team's senior roster were available for last night's game against Joe Public FC, which made establishing an offense difficult.

The result was a 4-0 loss. The injured group includes Kenny Mansally (ankle sprain), Kheli Dube (adductor strain), and Taylor Twellman (facial lacerations). Twellman was held out for precautionary reasons for fear he may have a concussion following a collision in Saturday's match against the Los Angeles Galaxy. The four forwards have accumulated 20 of the Revolution's 43 goals in all competitions this season.
