FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 2011 The Boston Globe C13 Schools After seeing red, Marblehead rolls Defense, Quigley beat Swampscott By Ryan Mooney GLOBE CORRESPONDENT VINCENT DEWITTFOR THE BOSTON GLOBE MARBLEHEAD -Marblehead coach Jim Rudloff knew what he had going into his Thanksgiving game against No. 16 Swampscott yesterday a resilient team with a good running game and, most importantly when facing a team like the Big Blue, a strong defense. But he had a little something else up his sleeve, too. On a day when tradition is usually embraced, the Magicians changed it up, sporting red jerseys that Rudloff purchased with extra money from school fund-raising programs. "I didn't tell a soul.

We warmed up in our black uniforms today, we went in the field house, I took the captains into the coach's office, the shirts were sitting there and the kids went bananas they went nuts. I knew somehow or another on this day it would be special to do something for this group and it worked." It was a way for Rudloff to thank his players for all their hard work on a day that is dedicated to giving thanks, and the squad's hard work paid off as the Magicians' defense put on its most stellar performance of the season, shutting down Swampscott's high-flying offense and league MVP Michael Walsh in a 21-7 win to secure the CALNEC Division 2 title and their second Division 2A playoff berth in three years. The Magicians will play Wakefield Tuesday. "We thought we could win a 24-21 game, that's kind of what the plan was during the week," Rudloff said. "We knew if it got up any higher than that we wouldn't win.

Never in my wildest dreams did I think we could hold them below 14 points." Swampscott (9-2, 4-1) ran into trouble early. Aiden Lang lost a fumble on the first offensive play of the game and the Big Blue went three-and-out on two of their next three possessions before halftime. The Magicians (8-2, 5-0) held Swampscott to 14 plays and 51 yards in the first half, and entered the break leading, 6-0, on a 3-yard run by quarterback Ian Maag (5-for-9 passing, 15 carries for 58 yards). DIVISION 2A ROUNDUP V- it-l-4' JOHN LANDING GLOBE STAFF Will Quigley (139 yards, two touchdowns) bursts around right end during Marblehead's win over Swampscott. "We didn't make plays," Swampscott coach Steve Dembowski said.

"The bottom line is we dropped passes, we fumbled, we had to punt I think Marblehead did exactly what they've done all year, they played good defense, ran the ball with Quigley we didn't make the plays today and they made them, so they won." Quigley (139 yards on 15 carries), who entered tied for third in Division 2 with 17 touchdowns, scored twice for Marblehead in the second half. He ran Damion Johnson hauls in a pass despite Nauset's Zack Morgan's efforts. Dolphins dominate Nauset By Emily Wright GLOBE CORRESPONDENT SOUTH YARMOUTH -Nauset put up a fierce fight in yesterday's battle against Atlantic Coast League foe Dennis-Yarmouth, but the Dolphins turned up the intensity in the second half and took home the Chowder Bowl as well as a second straight berth in the playoffs with a 27-15 victory. No. 4 Dennis-Yarmouth (11-0, 6-0) will take on No.

8 Walpole (9-2) Tuesday night in the Division 2A semifinals. The venue will be announced today. The last time Dennis-Yarmouth finished the regular season undefeated was in 1960. "Our kids have worked so hard all year," D-Y coach Paul Funk said. "We've been lifting, running, and conditioning, preparing for this since January.

We're back in it, that's two years in a row being ACL champs and that's very gratifying and I'm very proud of the kids that I have." The Dolphins went up, 14-0, in the first quarter with quarterback Matt Montalto (1 14 yards rushing) paving the way. He recorded 71 yards on the first two drives, including 45 rushing, and threw a 13-yard TD pass to Damion Johnson (150 all-purpose yards) for the first score three minutes in. Joe Furness drove in the second touchdown with a 1-yard punch up the middle with a minute remaining in the quarter. The Warriors had a chance to score in between the D-Y touchdowns after Derrick Holmes returned a kickoff 53 yards to give the Warriors the ball at the D-Y 27, but a delay of game penalty and a false start forced Mike Messersmith to try a field goal. The kick was short and fielded by Johnson in the end zone, and he returned it 58 yards to set up the second scoring drive.

Nauset (7-4, 4-2), which played an independent schedule last year, answered with a 65-yard touchdown drive that was capped by Holmes's 1-yard TD. Derrick (83 yards rushing) and his twin brother Nathan Holmes (98 yards rushing) alternated carrying the ball on the drive, except for a 12-yard rush from Brendan Battles-Santos. Nauset went three-and-out to start the second half, but Messersmith boomed a 52-yard punt that was downed at the Dolphins' 1-yard line. D-Y wasn't fazed. The Dolphins drove 99 yards and consumed more than five minutes to go up, 21-7.

Furness capped the drive when he skirted up the left sideline from 18 yards. "The drive of the game was the 99-yard drive that was it," Funk said. "We knew at that point we got the ball at the 1-yard line, drove it 99 yards and put it away right there. They were disciplined, they did what they were supposed to do." The Dolphins padded their lead five minutes later when Dylan Hodsdon (76 all-purpose yards) scored after being spun around in midair by Battles-Santos and Derrick Holmes before finishing off his 5-yard run. Nathan Holmes ran 10 yards with four seconds on the clock to close out the scoring.

Pacitto's field goal does it for Wakefield By Ryan Mooney GLOBE CORRESPONDENT Fans of old-fashioned, hard-nosed defensive football would have loved yesterday's 3-0 Wakefield win in the Warriors' Thanksgiving Day showdown against Melrose. Joe Pacitto gave the Warriors all the points they'd need by kicking a 33-yard field goal with six minutes remaining, and the defense made it stand up, stopping Melrose on fourth-and-goal with 10 seconds left to seal the win. DIVISION 3 ROUNDUP Boston Latin goes distance in routing English "That's the best defense, keep Walsh off the field," Rudloff said. On fourth-and-goal at the 4, Will Quigley took down Richard Sullivan for a 5-yard loss on a swing pass to give the Magicians the ball.
