Levine Chapels, Brookline 617-277-8300 Obituaries 3 ASSOCIATED Karlheinz Stockhausen, one of Germany's 1 most important postwar composers, held a workshop session in Rome in 1981. Karlheinz Stockhausen, avant-garde composer; at 79 By Mark Swed LOS ANGELES TIMES LOS ANGELES Karlheinz Stockhausen, the great German composer who envisioned music as a force of cosmic revolution and who himself became a musical force of nature with an unprecedented impact on both high and popular post World War II culture, died at his home in Germany. He was 79. Mr.

Stockhausen died Wednesday in Kurten, Germany, according to an announcement on his website. No cause of death was given. At the height of his fame in the 1960s, Mr. Stockhausen's name became synonymous with the future of music. His experiments with the structure of sound and his innovations with electronics made him a pioneer of the musical avant-garde but also attracted the attention of the most venturesome jazz and pop groups.

He helped inspire Miles Davis's most extreme musical experiments, and the Beatles included Mr. Stockhausen's photograph on the collage cover of "St. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band." While he never minded the attention, Mr. Stockhausen remained the epitome of the uncompromising artist. He was a prolific composer of 362 works.

He wrote numerous texts explaining his often arcane theories. He taught courses about his music and encouraged acolytes. He demanded selfless devotion from his chosen performers, many members of his extended family. A true visionary, he never let expense or practical matters stand in his way. He cared little for worldly possessions and was photographed for decades wearing the same jacket.

Among his most important pieces was what has come to be considered the first classic electronic score, "Gesang der Junglinge" (Song of the Youths), which he described in 1955 as the birth of space music. Another classic from 1958 is "Gruppen," which requires three orchestras and conductors. Once when asked what he might suggest be programmed with the difficult score for a performance by student ensembles at Tanglewood in Massachusetts, he replied that the evening should be "Gruppen," a lecture on "Gruppen," then "Gruppen" again. "He was the rock star of my youth," said Esa-Pekka Salonen, music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, yesterday. "When I was a teenager, my classmates listened to rock and pop, but I got the same kind of kicks listening to Stockhausen." By the time he wrote "Sontag" (Sunday) in 2003, Mr.

Stockhausen had become a mystic. He was ridiculed for the prophetic cavorting of biblical characters and all strange manner of goings on in the cycle. In "Freitag" (Friday), a typewriter copulates with a copying machine. In "Mittwoch" four helicopters circle above the theater carrying members of a string quartet, their music piped back into the hall mixed with the propeller noise. Mr.

Stockhausen always managed to find new fans to take the place of the older ones he alienated. Bjork has mentioned Stockhausen as an influence. Karlheinz Stockhausen was born in Aug. 22, 1928 in Modrath, near Cologne, Germany. By 16, he was an orphan.

His father, a Catholic school teacher who became a German army officer, never returned from World War II. His mother, who suffered severe depression, was one of the first victims of Adolf Hitler's "euthanasia policy." Mr. Stockhausen's own wartime experience was as stretcher-bearer in a military hospital. In Cologne, he studied piano and music education, then philosophy and musicology, working his way through school playing piano for an operetta company and also playing jazz in nightclubs. At the time of his death Mr.

Stockhausen was busy creating a new cycle, "Klang," of chamber works, one for each hour of the day the 13th had its premiere in Rome in May. Although the composer's death, which was said to follow a short illness, came as a surprise to the musical world, the fourth hour of "Klang" is called "Heaven's Door" and may well have been a premonition. Murray Klein; built Zabar's into gourmet food I emporium ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK Murray Klein, the public face of Zabar's whose marketing savvy transformed the Jewish delicatessen into an international food emporium and foodie haven, has died. He was 84. Mr.

Klein died of lung cancer on Thursday, Sandra Serrano, a manager who had worked with him for decades at the Upper West Side store, said yesterday. The store attracted hordes of customers by selling selected fancy food items at steep discounts and by packaging high-quality staples like coffee beans and preserves under Zabar's own private label.

Mr. Klein was also instrumental in developing Zabar's housewares department, hanging baskets and kitchen gadgets from the ceiling of the store at Broadway ASSOCIATED 1988 MURRAY KLEIN and 80th Street. "Murray Klein was to food retailing what Julia Child was to cooking," David Liederman, who sold his first David's Cookies to Zabar's in the 1980s, told The New York Times. Mr. Klein, who began his career at Zabar's as a stockman in 1953, was a constant presence on its sawdust -covered floor.

"If I walk out onto Zabar's floor and I can see my shoes, it's not busy enough," he was known to say. An immigrant from the former Soviet Union, Mr. Klein retired from the store in 1994..
