The Boston Globe C17 Schools DIVISION 1A ROUNDUP Nothing FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 26, 2010 JIM DAVISGLOBE STAFF in rout By Emily Wright GLOBE CORRESPONDENT Gloucester came out of yester-day's game against Danvers healthy, and that's what mattered most to coach Paul Ingram. The Fishermen, who shut out Danvers, 43-0, are slated to play Dual County Large champion Lincoln-Sudbury in the Division 1 A semifinals Tuesday. Jordan Shairs and Gilbert Brown each scored twice in the first half from short distances as the Fishermen built a 29-0 lead. Shairs struck first with a 1-yard score, and Gloucester tacked on a safety in the first quarter. Shairs scored again in the second quarter from the 5, sandwiched by two 10-yard TD rushes by Gilbert.

Joe Harmon and Alex Silveira ran for third-quarter scores for Gloucester. "It felt good that defense and offense played well," Ingram said. Ingram plans to keep the game plan the same for the playoffs. "We're not going to change much," Ingram said. "This has worked for us so far.

It'd be silly to change anything at this point." Bay State Braintree 20, Milton 19 Steven Lee kicked a 21 -yard field goal with no time left to win the game. Framingham 28, Natick 14 Greg Finley rushed for two scores and passed for another in the Flyers' win. Newton North 41, Brookline 12 The Tigers won the first Thanksgiving game on their new field, thanks to four straight touchdowns, three by Ben Clark. Dual County Large Westford 21, Acton-Boxbor-ough 18 Patrick Dugan finished 9 of 14 for 148 yards in the air and added 52 yards rushing for the Grey Ghosts. Northeastern Large Lynn English 22, Lynn Classical 12 Tyllor McDonald picked up 265 of the Bulldogs' 293 yards and passed for two touchdowns.

Eric Sisson ran for 108 yards and a touchdown for Lynn Classical. Nonleague Barnstable 46, Falmouth 14 Doug Crook had two passing TDs and a rushing TD for the Red Raiders. Dartmouth 35, Fairhaven 12 Linebacker Andrew Kestenbaum led the Indians' defense with 15 tackles (four for losses), two forced fumbles, and a sack. Trevor Leandro passed for two TDs and ran for one. Peabody 34, Saugus 13 Junior Nat Gaye had 17 carries for 151 yards and two touchdowns, and junior Brady Doyle had 143 yards on five carries and a TD.

Revere 28, Winthrop 22 Senior Trae Weathers's four touchdowns, including the winner in overtime, gave him 30 scores for the season. Taunton 35, Coyle Cassidy 7 Cabrinni Goncalves rushed for four TDs for Taunton, three in the first quarter. His scores covered 85, 18, 90, and 17 yards. Dracut quarterback Matt Silva (left) did a number on Methuen with his arm (two TD passes) and his legs (TD run, big gain on this missed tackle by Mike Harper). Silva is golden in Dracut' victory ByDanHickling GLOBE CORRESPONDENT METHUEN -There are those plays that jump Dracut will have a chance to avenge last year's postseason loss to the Rockets.

"Aw man, it's huge," said Dracut lineman Paul Salem. "I can't describe how happy I am right now." Silva echoed the sentiment. "Everybody was doubting us," said Silva, "saying that Methuen was at the top of the league this year. But we proved that we have the skill position players and the coaches. They stuck with us and kept us going." Going, indeed, but on Silva's back.

He tossed two touchdown passes, both to Chris Malonis, and ran 3 yards for the decisive score with 8:22 to play. None of it was pretty. "There's not a tougher kid that I've played with or coached," said rookie Dracut coach Jason Houston. "He takes shots left and right. Week in, week out.

He finds a way to get up and continue to play. To soldier on." He did just that early in the third quarter, when Dracut had the ball, third and 4, on its 43 and trailing, 12-6. Silva was in the shotgun formation when a bad snap left the ball bouncing at his feet. Silva tried to make a play, shoveling to Malonis at the right sideline. While Malonis picked his way downfield for the tying score, Sil va got clobbered on the play.

"It was really loud in the stadium, and the snap kind of bob-bled," said Silva. "I saw Malonis out of the corner of my eye and I tossed it to him as I got nailed. I didn't even know what happened." He didn't, but Malonis did after crossing the goal line, then looking back to see Silva on the turf. "I thought it was going to be a repeat of last Thanksgiving," said Malonis. "Matt going down with a shoulder injury.

It really hurt us for the Reading game. But he's a fighter. He just keeps on battling and battling." Silva had Rangers in his face on the first touchdown, too, but still managed to loft a pass to Malonis, who took the ball in full stride. The play covered 60 yards. Methuen (9-2) rebounded to take a 12-6 lead on second-quarter drives engineered by quarterback Cal Carroll.

The Rangers knotted the score, 6-6, on a 47-yard scamper by Ryan Savastra-no. A 58-yard strike from Carroll to Eric Lacroix put them ahead. Said Methuen coach Pat Graham, "I thought if we had made a few more plays in the first half, that we could have had a few more touchdowns. I felt good coming out of halftime. But we didn't make plays.

Against that team, you can't do those things." straight from the chalkboard to the field, running exactly as they were drawn up. Then again, there are the sort made by Dracut quarterback Matt Silva in yesterday's game against ancient foe Methuen before 5,000 at Nicholson Stadium. Silva's improvisation skills helped produce a crucial 57-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter that propelled Dracut (8-3) to a 19-12 win and a berth in Tuesday's Division 2 playoffs against Reading. little goes wrong for Reading again By Jeff Powalisz GLOBE CORRESPONDENT STONEHAM For a few weeks at least, I John Fiore had stopped 393 points, second in school history behind the 441 they scored last season. Reading has allowed just 70 points this season, with four shutouts.

"Finishing the regular season strong at 11-0 is the way I wanted to go out as a senior, or the way anyone wants to go out a senior," said tricaptain Jeff Covitz, a workhorse on both lines. "We don't look at the records too much. Some of the games we've won this year have been big, but deep down we know that we could have played a lot better." With all 28 points coming in the first half, Fiore was able to put his starters on the sideline and give his backups and underclassmen some work. "We were able to take our starters out "It kind of goes against our philosophy," Fiore said, "but sometimes you have to change that up, and I felt we had a mature enough team to do that. "The senior class has been to the playoffs three times in their career, and the juniors and sophomores have been twice.

I felt we were in a good position." After the team's fourth consecutive 28-0 Thanksgiving shutout of Stoneham yesterday, the Rockets (11-0) waltz into the playoffs with full momentum. They will host Dracut Tuesday night at 7:45 at Birch Meadow. The streaks, the history, and the numbers are tough to ignore. Since a loss to Walpole in the 2008 playoffs, the Rockets have compiled 24 consecutive victories. They currently have right away and put our younger kids in, so that was good," Fiore said.

"I'm very happy with the way the kids responded today." Senior running back Larry Gilligan provided the first score five minutes into the game, rushing in from 4 yards. Brian Bourque scored two minutes later on a 12-yard quarterback keeper, and his 2-point rush put Reading ahead, 14-0. Junior Zack Bates's 11-yard run two minutes into the second quarter gave Reading a three-touchdown cushion, and Joe Guarino wrapped up the scoring on a 3-yard run with 2: 12 left in the half. Reading, which leads this Thanksgiving series, 57-15-4, scored at least 20 points in all but one of its regular-season games and at least 30 in all but three. fooling himself and his team.

His Rockets had clearly earned every accolade that came their way. Reading had nearly completed its dirty work the strenuous practices and demanding schedule and there was little left to critique. The adored coaching adage of "one game at a time" would have to be thrown aside. The defending Division 2 Super Bowl champion Rockets finished off the Middlesex League with a gaping lead, and set their sights on a second consecutive trip to the playoffs. Globe correspondent Anthony Gulizia contributed to this report.
