B12 The Boston Globe MONDAY, AUGUST 8, 2011 Names Mark Shanahan Meredith Goldstein 'Supernatural' visit Supernatural forces swept into town this weekend for Creation Entertainment's first-ever Boston "Supernatural" convention. The stars of The CW fantasy series gathered at the Hyatt Regency Cambridge to mingle with fans, sign autographs, and, in their downtime, check out the local scenery. Actor Richard Speight who plays the Trickster and the archangel Gabriel on the show, told us he hadn't spent a lot of time in Boston, but knew enough about the city to head straight to the Union Oyster House with his costar Matt Cohen and convention favorite Jason Manns. "I know it's touristy, but still. It's phenomenal," Speight gushed.

His timing was impeccable. During dinner, Aerosmith screamer Steven Tyler showed up, and Speight compared the fan reaction in the restaurant to "Beatlemania." The actor, whose other credits include "Thank You for Smoking," "Band of Brothers," and "Jericho," was a tourist again Saturday, having lunch in Harvard Square with "Supernatural" leading men Jared Pa-dalecki and Jensen Ackles. The convention ended yesterday. PHOTOS BY KENT EANES Above: On the set of "Crooked Arrows" in Topsfield. Below: Chelsea Ricketts and Brandon Routh waiting to film a scene.

Good times for Thorne Callie Thorne knows she's living a charmed life. The Boston-bred actress (pictured) stars on the USAdramedy "Necessary Roughness," which airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. Her co-stars are a trio of Before the sky opened up yesterday, the weather had been cooperating with the cast and crew of "Crooked Arrows," the movie starring Brandon Routh and Chelsea Ricketts that's currently filming here.

About a Native American high school lacrosse team's battle against a rival prep school, the film's on a tight timetable, with shooting slated to last no more than 25 days. The real test will be next weekend, when director Steve Rash Buddy Holly Story" and "Can't Buy Me shoots the all-important championship game scene at St. John's Prep in Danvers. (In the movie, St. John's is a fictional school called Coventry.) Co-producer J.

Todd Harris told us he needs more than 1,000 extras for the scene, in addition to the hundreds of Native Americans who are being bused in from around the East Coast. "How do I get 1,000 people to show up at 7 a.m. on a Saturday and stay all day for free?" he said. "We're turning it into an event." There'll be assorted A-list lax men and women coach Dom Starsia of the national champion University of Virginia, Brown's Lars Tiffany, Harvard's Chris Wojcik, and Syracuse's John Desko, to name a few as well as a skills demonstration, and raffle items from sponsor Reebok. "We're hoping people will turn out," says Harris.

Scenes have also been shot at The Governor's Academy in Byfield and at the Topsfield Fairgrounds, which was turned into a Native American reservation for a few days. hunky actors: Scott Cohen, Marc Blucas, and Mehcad Brooks. "That gorgeosity mixed with the funny is what I think makes someone the sexiest for sure," Thorne said during a chat at the Television Critics Association press tour in LA. "It's what I think about Denis and Steve," she added, referring to her "Rescue Me" costars Denis Leary and Steven Pasquale. Thorne has played Leary's nutty ex-wife on the FX show for seven years.

(The series finale is Sept. 7.) Thorne told us she has nothing but praise for her fictional ex and real-life friend: "Being with Denis was a master class." The costars maybe linked again, as Leary is developing and co-writing a half-hour comedy pilot about paramedics for USA. vCIIII Popping in on the Pops With an assist from Peter and Bobby Farrelly, the Pops played their annual concert by the sea in Hyan-nis yesterday. The funny filmmakers were the guest conductors this year, temporarily taking over for Robert Bernhardt at the podium. Larry David, who's not known for his singing voice, joined in the fun, giving a surprise vocal performance.

Also on the bill were Broadway stars Kelli O'Hara and Jason Dan-ieley, who paid tribute to the late great Cole Porter. Sparks flew PHOTOS BY BARRY CHINGLOBE STAFF Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards had a hot time on Martha's Vineyard Saturday night. Keef, who's been an occasional visitor to the Vineyard for years, was at the Edgartown restaurant-bar Atria, where he watched fire spinner Martina Fajkusova do her thing. (Just like it sounds, fire spinning involves spinning objects chains, batons, and hula hoops that are on fire.) The man who has seen it all was mighty impressed, at least according to the fire spinner's father. "Richards was quite taken with the performance," Jib Ellis told us yesterday.

The Czech-born Fajkusova, who lives in Oak Bluffs and also surfs, had another famous fan in the audience: Adam Sandler. Sideline stars at Fenway Bassist booted after holdup Prog rockers Coheed and Cambria have cut loose bassist Mike Todd, who was busted before the band's recent show at the Comcast Center for allegedly robbing a pharmacy in Attleboro to obtain prescription painkillers. The band posted a statement on its website saying the group "will be continuing our journey without bassist Michael Todd We have spoken to him and this is a mutual decision between both parties." Todd, 30, was arrested in Mansfield on July 10, just before the band was to open for Soundgarden.

The group went on without him that night, and a replacement bassist was hired to finish out the tour. The police said he had entered a Walgreens drug store in Attleboro a few hours earlier and had showed a pharmacist a note written on his mobile phone that said he had a bomb. He then allegedly demanded six bottles of Oxycontin, walked outside, hailed a cab, and asked to be taken to the Comcast Center. Todd has been released from jail and is scheduled to appear in court this week. 'Apes' climbs to No.

1 "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," the "Planet of the Apes" prequel, climbed to the top rung of the weekend box office, taking in $54 million, according to studio estimates yesterday. That's $20 million more than analysts expected for the film starring James Franco, Freida Pinto, and Andy Serkis. "The Smurfs," meanwhile, remained at No. 2 for the second straight weekend with $21 million, lifting its domestic total to $76.2 million. The science fiction western "Cowboys Aliens," which debuted at No.
