Washburn, who developed into a slow curveball pitcher-after an arm ailment robbed him of his fast ball in 1963. pitched a no-hitter Wednesday to give the Cardinals a 2-0 victory over the San Francisco Giants. Washburn's no-hitter came only 24 hours after the Giants'. Gaylord Perry no-hinted the Cardinals and was the third of the National League season.

Washburn's no hitter marked the fourth time there have been three no-hitters in the NL in one season. There have been three or more, pitched in -the, American League eight times and a total of six no-hitters was pitched in the majors in 1917.

Adolfo Phillips two-run homer climaxed a three-run eighth inning off Jerry Koosman and carried the Cubs to their victory. The loss was Koosman's lUh against 18 victories and apparently ended the rookie's chances of becoming the NL's first rookie 20-game winner since 1947. Rich Nye received credit for his seventh win against 12 losses. Johnny Briggs singled home the winning run in the seventh inning to give the Phillies Jerry Johnson his, third- victory and tag the Pirates' Bob Veale with his 14th defeat Donn Clen-denon had three hits for the Pirates. Phil Niekro pitched a three-hitter to win his 12th game for the Braves and deal -Houston's Denny Lemaster his 15th loss.

Hank and Tom-tnie Aaron each doubled home a run in the first inning for the Braves and Niekro went on to strike out seven batters while yield-in only three walks. Gerry Arrigo pitched a four-hitter and Tony Perez doubled home one run and scored another as the Reds dealt Don Sutton his 15th loss.
